    Hunting opportunity in Maui

Before you go to Maui you will need to get a non-residence exemption number before you get a license. After you have that number then you can get a hunting license. Don't wait to do this. Hawaiian government officials aren't as fast or efficient as our mainland ones. It may take longer than...

    Cooler Question

I have the 150 Grizzly and I think it is well worth the money. The Grizzly looks more durable than the Igloo to me.

    Drew NV 231 Deer

This could be the first time I have ever heard somebody wonder if they should turn in a 231 tag and hope for a better one next year. You could ask Randy Ulmer if he would like it.

I don't think they fix flats. I may be wrong but they just sell gas. You may have to drive to Gerlach or Winnemucca. Easier to bring spares than to drive 3-4 hours round trip to fix a flat. That is why I always bring a sat phone up there. You generally won't have cell phone service and you...

Summit Lake isn't close to anything. Your best bet for fuel, hotel and a great bar is Denio Junction. For a full store you better bring everything you need and a Yeti or Grizzly cooler. This is where those coolers are worth every penny. You can't just run down to the store and get more ice...

Is the Grand Slam/Ovis show worth it?

I think Scheels has bowtech. Also House of Arrows is a dedicated bow shop. Going to the Grand Slam show you at least have the chance at a cheap auction hunt.

Is the Grand Slam/Ovis show worth it?

you may want to come for the Wild Sheep Foundation meeting next week instead. The Grand Slam/Ovis takes about 20 minutes to see everything. The WSF has a lot more to see and do and is only $15.

    Sheep equipment

Also, don't forget to pack a paperback book. You will most likely get stuck in your tent for a day or 5 due to weather. At the beginning of August 2011 I was snowed in for 4 days. Since there is no wood to start a fire you are confined to the tent. A good book sure helps pass the time.

    Sheep equipment

One thing to keep in mind for a late Aug early Sept NWT hunt is you will get rained on. Make sure your gear can keep you warm and safe even if it rains and snows the whole time. For a pack I like my Kifaru Bikini frame and DT1 bag. It can carry all the gear you will need and still have room...

    Kifaru pack/frame choices

I would recommend calling Aron Snyder. His number is posted on the Kifaru site. He could explain the perfect setup for you. He also has videos posted on Rokslide and youtube that show the packs and how he sets them up.

    Kifaru pack/frame choices

I don't know how to rotate the pic so turn your head to the side. Here is my 7 year old daughter in the pack. As you can see there is a lot of room to pack whatever you need.

    Kifaru pack/frame choices

For the meat pushing through and jamming into my back I guess that could happen but I haven't experienced it. I packed out a couple mule deer this year with this pack and I don't remember ever having any discomfort from the load pushing into my back. I picked that setup for the best weight...

    Kifaru pack/frame choices

I am running the Bikini with the DT1 frame. I got that set up so I can pack out anything I want and still have a pack that compresses down for a nice day pack. The bikini frame is very comfortable while loaded heavy. It does carry the heavy weight better than my Kuiu icon 6000. I don't notice...

    nahanni butte outfitters

I have hunted with them. They run a first class operation. You will get a sheep no problem. They are pulling out some huge sheep right now. I saw a lot of nice caribou while I was there but got snowed out before I could connect. Great operation and great guys.

    Barnes TSX fail!

Something is a little fishy with this story. First the bullet on the left doesn't look like a Barnes. At least the ones I use don't have a bonded lead core. I also don't understand how both bullets ended up just under the hide. With one bullet expanded and one not there should be completely...

    Unit 33 Lope

I was just up there helping my dad with his tag. We saw a lot of antelope but nothing giant. Tons of low to mid 70's. Hopefully the rut will be in full swing for your hunt and some of the bigger boys will be running around. Good luck

    BLM Wild Horse Policy

Not only is BLM involved in feral horse management but the State of Nevada also has a responsibility to manage horses on State land. BLM has been doing a pretty good job with the horse round-ups even while under fire from the crazy fringe horse advocates. The State of Nevada Department of...

    Safety?

If you go to the East Cape then you will have to overnight somewhere. At least every time I have been there I had to. This last August I stayed at the new hotel at the Joberg Airport. It was surprisingly nice and very safe. At least I didn't have to drive across town to go to a guest house...

    2nd Amendment

In their haste to pass legislation, the idiots we keep electing may also ban semi-auto shotguns. In the past language in the bills could have banned the use of semi-auto shotguns since the antigun folks don't understand guns or how they work. It took a lot of work to keep the shotgun language...

full body mounts? your thoughts, lifetime trophies

Full mount. I have always felt that big sheep deserve to be displayed in a full mount. There is nothing more majestic then a grand slam all full mounted. The only way I wouldn't is if the Dall is a small one. Then save the space for a bigger Dall. I have 13 full mount animals in my room and...

problem: ranch owner posting public land no hunting

Has anybody used the HuntingGPS maps for Nevada? It is supposed to show the landowner/private property lines. I was looking at getting this because I run into these issue quite often. That is why I looked up the law concerning landowner tags and access through their land. 2 weeks ago we were...

problem: ranch owner posting public land no hunting

There is some language in Nevada law concerning access to land that is awarded a landowner or depredation tag. I would contact NDOW and make sure the landowner isn't in violation of his agreement to issue the tag. Here is some of the law NAC 502.4248  Cooperative agreement with...

    tag numbers are going up

On the NDOW site it does say that increasing tag numbers don't mean an increase in harvest. The success rate is so low that giving out 10 tags equals only 4 dead deer at best. It seems to me that the main reason is bringing in more money not balancing the herd. I wish they would raise the...

    GSC Extortion!

MJ. I really don't want GSC to profit from this but it would be a great kick in the balls if WSF was legally able to use the the term grand slam. After going to the GSC convention this year I can't imagine they are doing that well. You could walk through the entire show in about 10 minutes. I...

    GSC Extortion!

i just looked at the GSCO website and reviewed the grand slam registration form. It isn't stated anywhere on the form that you must be a member or pay a archive fee. I would think that there is a legal issue with them eliminating the grand slam number if the registration form didn't state it...

Fired for killing a Mtn Lion??

LAST EDITED ON Mar-02-12 AT 04:15PM (MST)[p]I am surprised Lt Gov Newsom is such an advocate for mountain lions. I always suspected he wasn't fond of *****. Make sure you don't eat at any Plumpjack restaurants or drink Plumpjack wine as that is the Newsom family business and how they fund...

Anyone else? Sheep? Suggestions? Full curl society?

There are some affordable options to get some sheep. A cancellation Dall Sheep in Alaska would go $7-9K. This would be a great hunt and not very expensive. With the economy this is a more available option. You could also go for an aoudad in Texas. A high quality free range is 4000-6500. You...

    Mozambique??

I hunted Mozambique with Zambeze Delta Safaris, the Haldanes, in 2009. Don't think about going, just go. It was the best trip I have been on. There is an unbelievable amount of game and the buffalo is a sure thing if you can walk in the swamps. They are also doing a forest hunt for the...

    Witch stove

I don't think there is a huge difference in size or weight between the 3 and the 4 dog. Since that tent doesn't hold the heat real well I would go with the bigger one. Call the owner of 4 dog stoves. He really knows his stoves and can help out with the decision. I know I am very happy with...

    New hunting gear for 2011??

hntnnut I got that 4 dog stove this last season. That is one of my better purchases. I couldn't be happier with it. For this year I have the entire line of Kuiu gear on the way including the 6000 pack. Hopefully that will keep me warm and dry on my Dall hunt this summer.
