November 2023 Off Range Oryx hunt

Congrats on the oryx harvest! From what I read in the new proclamation, Ft. Bliss (or lands controlled by Ft. Bliss) are closed for off-range oryx hunting. I copied and pasted the language in the oryx section of the new proclamation: "Closed Areas: GMU 28, White Sands Missile Range, Jornada...

Thought on New Mexico draw process

your application is number one, not you. if it were your elk app, then you would draw your elk license. your other apps are separate and looked at later depending on where they are at in the draw.

Thought on New Mexico draw process

All species applications are put into 1 computer pot. This includes elk, deer, etc and also includes resident, non-resident and outfitter applications (some applications have resident and non-resident hunters on same application). There is 1 "draw" completed which means a random shuffle of all...

    Ibex rifle

I bowhunted ibex the two times I've been able to draw and had absolute blast. This was over ten years ago when the herd was absolutely incredible. I need to tag along with SMARBA and learn how to hunt!!! Followed his ibex adventures over the years, so if anybody knows what the herd is like...

That tag is only valid to harvest a buck during the September 1-24 timeframe. It is valid in the Silver City management area for a doe Jan. 16-Feb 5 if you don't harvest a buck in September.

    new commission appointee's

No matter who is on the game commission, sportsmen (and women) need to voice opinions in a positive way and work to find the middle ground. Majority of the issues are social anyway. First step is to get the game commission to move their meetings to a Saturday. Get more involvement from...

    Good luck

Digging this thread up again because of the good lucks i got after i said the boy passed hunter ed. He drew the Nov. youth deer tag in unit 24!! whoo hoo, it's gonna be a fun year. He's willing to harvest a mule deer or Coues' but wants to focus on the whitetail. I was able to draw the...

    NM A-PLUS Landowner List GONE

Public hunters will be ok in the southwest area. lots of public land accessible by vehicle or foot. Yes, some areas will be locked up and there will be some issues, however as a whole public hunters will be able to go anywhere they want and not be dictated to a specific ranch. I don't like...

    Interesting article, worth looking at.

When this happened, the guide and outfitters were very organized and lobbied for their interests. I do agree that it should be two pools, resident and non-resident. No outfitter pool. It will take legislative action to accomplish. We just need to get organized or at least speak up when bills...

    Hunting

That is a really great idea. Have a place to put down what units we want to be quality vs. opportunity. If 10,000 hunters put unit "x" down for opportunity and only 2,000 hunters put that unit down as quality, opportunity unit it is. we should go straight to the commission with these ideas.

    Hunting

"They" don't listen because hunters are not committed as a "group". A comment here and there does not do anything..... As hunters, we are just as divisive as any group. NMDGF thrives on that......Except for landowners.......... which NMDGF bends over backwards for..... Until sportsmen...

    Hunting

What do hunters want? Big bucks/bulls? We all do. Or do we? Killing males will not affect a population. Killing females "manages" a population. As hunters, why don't we comment and direct the Game and Fish to what we want?????? 60-70,000 thousands of elk/deer hunter applicants per...

Surprise! Your hunting fees are going up ...

How about we focus on the real issues in NM? Such as killing coyotes and predators at the critical times, which is when deer fawn and elk calve? Burning and thinning thousands of acres(BLM, State Land, and FS)? Do hunters only want to focus on selfish things instead of actually helping...

    Best Mule Deer Unit

Exactly my point (I don't necessarily agree that it is the deer biologist decision, more in line with the overall G&F decision's, i wouldn't want to give him that much credit.......). What do hunters want? More and bigger bucks? Awesome, then reduce the number of buck tags. Simple as...

    Reliving a year ago today

Wow, what a great animal and awesome memories! The boy and I just reviewed some hunter ed material in preparation for him taking the course. Your photo gets us all excited for him to hopefully draw this tag in the future! Great job!! Sometimes we lose focus of what hunting is all about...

    Best Mule Deer Unit

I've said on here before a few times that killing only bucks will not affect a deer "population". I'm thinking we need to get some common ground before we continue these discussions. Buck only hunting will do nothing to affect a deer "population". Yes, it will affect the number of bucks in...

    New Flying Rule

You are right, tough to enforce. Existing rule and new rule. This is an example of ethics being pushed to the limit. What do the "average" sportsmen want the G&F to do? Let the Governor's tag's holders' outfitters fly to find the biggest critter on the mountain?

    Best Mule Deer Unit

This is not rocket science. This social management. Hunting/Killing bucks does nothing to increase nor decrease a deer population. Habitat manipulation (on large scale such as 100,000 acres, etc.), pray for rain, and predator management (such as killing coyotes during fawning season) and...

Surprise! Your hunting fees are going up ...

Again, another example of "social" management. There will be no measurable difference in the number of applicants for licenses in 2019-2020. Never should have been offered in the first place since most western states require this fee or other fees to apply for licenses. Still very cheap to...

    Governors Tag Hunters

Contemplated on this quite a bit, as I want to convey a message of common sense, rather than emotionally based ranting. Passthrough, you are right in that the number of "gov. tags" does not send the message that hunting is only for the "royalty". I only want to convey the message that 99% of...

    Meat eater Podcast 145

In 2018-2019 hunting season, there were 62,776 first choice applicants applying for deer licenses in NM. I took that from the draw odds data off of the NMDGF website. There were approximately 60-70 written comments during the regulation period this year. That's real data, "hardly" anybody...

    Governors Tag Hunters

This goes against the north american model of wildlife management!!!!! The old model in Europe only allows royalty to hunt, do we want that here in the US? I don't. The more we allow this happen, the more we sell our ourselves to the "Old World" way of "managing wildlife". Do not let this...

    Meat eater Podcast 145

Yes, we need to address the license fees for all species. Javelina fee needs to be decreased and every other species needs to be adjusted based on today's demands. That is set by legislature. How about we have the legislature add the mt. lion license to every deer license? Lion harvest...

Just to keep everyone updated, this is the time to submit comments and ideas that will affect the elk and deer rules for the next four years. Elk, Deer, E-PLUS Rules

www.wildlife.state.nm.us go to this website and look under commission proposals. Currently landowners in "outside COER" are allowed to hunt beginning Oct. 1. Public draw hunters wait until mid Oct. to hunt. I don't think this is consistent with the North American Model of Wildlife...

    Ibex Hunting

Fine, then go to the Dept. and say so..... I ask the question because currently the Florida Mts. are the only mountain range that ibex are "allowed" to be on..... So, what is management goal???? Understanding, "exotics" are not allowed on any other mt. range. I think if the goal is to...

Hunters need to understand why NMDGF have rules, specifically the elk landowner rule. Compensation? really? I don't see where it says NM should compensate LO's? If it is for access to private land, then where are the Unit Wide maps on the NMDGF website???? Just some honest...

CALLING YOU OUT NMPAUL & MM!!

I for one think we need to re-think OIL. Just like bonus/preference points, it should be phased out.
  36. G

YOUR OPINION MATTERS - SURVEY - REALLY

I think we need to define OIL! What exactly is OIL? Is it the opportunity to hunt oryx? Is it the quality of the hunt? In today's standards, it probably should be a quality of hunt issue, meaning keeping the numbers of hunters low on the OIL hunts so he/she can enjoy the hunt without a lot of...

    Oryx OIL

NMDGF is in the process of evaluating oryx data and determining the future of oryx hunting for the next four years. I've seen the other posts regarding oryx hunting and wanted to chime in on a subject that is probably going to get loud. I understand that in 1970 oryx hunting was new and a...
