    2017 Muzzleloader Buck

Great story and a fantastic buck! I would have to agree that there is nothing that matches chasing big muleys (except maybe screaming september bulls)! As far as score goes I would put him in the low 180's

    Found Truck Key

I'm going to say it's most likely not yours then. This was found on a trail inaccessible by motor vehicles. It definitely has not endured a winter from the looks of it. It looks like it was possibly lost a few days before I found it. I do know there was a hunter and his party out of Missouri...

    Found Truck Key

Hello ladies and gents. During my excursions hunting elk and deer on the central mountains manti unit I happened upon a Dodge Truck Key. The key is part of the actual key fob. The keychain also only had one other key on it which is very small and I suspect goes to a padlock, truck toolbox, or...

Central mountains/ Manti / San Rafael

For elk, It depends on the section of lower desert country. Most of the lower elevation is private property so it's difficult for access. There are definitely sections that hold elk but not nearly in the numbers the higher elevations do. As far as deer go, there are decent numbers pretty much...

+1 for the skyline drive If you don't want to drive as far from AZ check out the Great Western Trail that turns into the Skyline drive as you get further north, Willow Creek Road, or Salina Creek Road for access to the southern portion of the unit. Like mentioned above, pick a canyon that looks...

    Henry Mtns...Would You?

Not a shooter on the Henry's for me. I'll never draw that unit anyways but with the bucks I have seen on that unit, I would have to pass unless it was coming down to the last few days of my hunt, my hitlist had been harvested by other hunters, or I had no better options available. I would agree...

    Spike elk euro mount

Mike over at Sage Basin taxidermy in alpine would be the guy to take it to. I'm not sure what he charges to inject the velvet, but my big bull last year was less than $200. He does absolutely fantastic work as well! http://www.sagebasin.com/

1st time hunting out west. What elevation in Utah Oct 21-29

This tag and season will depend largely on the amount of snowfall at the peak elevations. My recommendation would be to take the huntington canyon road up to the skyline drive and check the snow levels at that time. Then hunt anywhere below the snow line for the most part. I would suggest taking...

Central Mountains, manti archery deer tag in August

The area east of highway 10 has a very low density of game compared to the other portions of the unit. The area above the town of emery has a lot of private parcels intermixed with public land so it can be tricky to find good areas. You may have to commit to a longer drive to have a higher...

    Injuries and Corresponding Antler Growth

My understanding stems from the human anatomy, but it most likely corresponds with deer as the central nervous system of mammals is very similar across the board. In the brain stem of mammals, the external stimuli that occurs below the brain stem (meaning that the source of stimulus affects...

What you think on this bull?

310-320 depending on the stage of growth, a little weak on beam length. But I am unfamiliar with wyoming, as far as general Utah, shooter for sure!

    Manti Early Rifle

It sounds like you're going to be in his honey hole ;) All jokes aside, from what I've seen, the central and southern portions of the unit have a higher population density and therefore should have more mature bulls than the north side of the unit. But I have seen some great bulls all over the...

How early do the big boys start talking?

I can guarantee that it wasn't someone trying out a call, my tracks were the only ones into and out of the area after a brief shower so the roads had been reset as far as tracks were concerned. There were also no camps around so I think it was definitely animals. I guess I was just more...

How early do the big boys start talking?

So I was down scouting for deer and my BIL's elk tag this weekend and before sundown one night I had a group of bulls chatting back and forth with some cows in the timber below me out of sight. My question is: What do you think was the situation? I always thought that bugles were more of a...

    Central Mountains/San Rafael -Utah Hunt

It's a massive unit with great country anywhere you go! Lots of trail access and it is very popular for camping and recreating. There are some big deer in the unit but usually away from the hustle and bustle. There is also quite a bit of sporadic private land so be careful and have a good...

    Can you tell already?

For me, early season judging is mainly by the look of their face/body size for maturity. Look for the big roman nose first and foremost; look at the body size comparison, especially in a bachelor group; then start looking for the exact things you've specified above; mass, width and forks or...

So the results are in and my BIL drew the same tag for the 2017 season! My taxidermist recognized droptine immediately when I showed him a picture and said that he was helping someone on the late hunt chase him. They could never close the distance enough to make it happen. Here's to hoping...
