Also recommend a 2ft leader of 20-30 lb mono or fluorocarbon. Some might suggest a wire leader but I've gotten by without them. They aren't that different from bass fishing, until you catch one; watch out for the teeth and bring band-aids ?

Any jerk bait or swim bait can work, but I've had better luck in June/July (at Bluewater). I've caught them on top water also, but I think it's way too early for that. I've also caught some on crankbaits like bomber model A's and Rapala shad raps, stop and pause occasionally. And the "go to"...

I've hunted there a good bit over the years and never saw any rattlesnakes. That is until I had an archery tag in 2020 and this guy crawled into my blind! Luckily it was just a small prairie rattler and not very aggressive.

On a serious note you could also try sitting water or fence crossings, especially on day 1. Hopefully they will reorder the hunts in the future so rifle is after muzzleloader.

Congrats on the hunt! VC was managed indirectly through the FS for a good while, later converted to Park Service via legislation.

I don't have first hand info about 13, but most of western NM got tremendous rainfall this summer, I'd expect plenty of water.

As roadrunner mentioned it's essentially all private, so your hunt will entirely depend on the quality and quantity of the private land you have access to.

July has been mostly disappointing unfortunately. Started out great in June, but overall weak since then.

We caught a few walleye and bass last week, including one at 27", but overall it was a slow bite. Should pick up soon but I'm ready for the wind to die down! Used to get a few crappie in the mix, but not lately.
