    2nd season unit 21 deer

I would bring ATVs because of the roads. Roads get really tough with the clay including lower. Many are washing out. Look for cheatgrass growing in the bottom of draws. If it is hot and dry identify water sources and possible routes down to the water that don't cross major roads. You may be...

    Units 82, 86, 861 Above Timberline

Problem was the quakie trees falling into the trails. Spent 1/2 day sawing and chopping to get the mules up the trail. Finally set camp lower than planned.

    Sad News.

Longshot349 post some pics!! Went to grade school on Piceance creek early 68 - 72. When driving down the creek in the winter time, we would count 1000s of deer. Was told that one field, owned by Oldlands(?) actually had over 1000 deer alone. Few people today really know what a lot of deer...

    High country hunting

Where I hunt in the high country weather can be a factor. What happens when on the day of your hunt you find it is a fogged in rainy windy mess and it doesn't change all day? A couple days and you have only 1 day left to hunt! I don't think I take that chance. We have had bad weather and...

    My Unit 201 Rifle bull

Mnbearhunter, I think the roads are in decent shape. To me it doesn't look like that clay type. slick as snot soil, ha. Unless, you are down lower then the soil type turns into clay. As you know there are roads everywhere and with an ATV you could almost drive to or get close to a down...

    My Unit 201 Rifle bull

56 buck tags seems like maybe to many tags to me. We were surprised with how many deer was saw, but I don't think there are 56 older age class bucks in there! Would hope someone is chasing lions and filling the quota. It could be great deer area.

    My Unit 201 Rifle bull

Once again, great bull and congratulations. I think the bull you shot was probably a year older than the one I shot. I know you certainly passed up a lot of bulls, was he the largest you saw?

    My Unit 201 Rifle bull

Here are a couple more pictures. I heard the local rancher and outfitter Raftoupolis, runs 10,000 head of cattle in this unit. Black cows are everywhere and they were there last year and I think every year. But, there was so much grass and so many places to water, the range looked good to...

    My Unit 201 Rifle bull

Had a fun hunt, saw 100 to 150 5/6 point bulls in two days of hunting, just crazy. The evening before, we heard bugling constantly for over 3 hours. Spent a lot of time sneaking around good bulls at less than 100 yards. This felt like a once in a lifetime experience, which it is, ha. In this...

    Fresh Northwest Colo lion kill

Not bad. Did see some bachelor groups of bucks, but overall nothing big. I saw one that looked pretty good, velvet hanging on/off his antlers. Don't think he was thirty, but not bad. Rumor has it that there are good bucks there. I ran across two guys who were scouting, that burned 12...

    Fresh Northwest Colo lion kill

Well, here is another. No flies, no smell, I almost walked right past it. Noticed a small bit of blood, thought it was a coyote turd, ha, but it was attached to a nice piece of meat. The ground seemed to be churned up, so looked around and right above it saw the hoofs sticking out of ground...

    Lion Kill - Northwest Colo

I do not know for certain. You yourself made the observation that the rack had decent mass. It was a decent rack, one that a healthy animal would grow. So, I assume that buck didn't die of some health issue... That leaves predators. Coyotes, this time of year, no. Besides, there were tons...

Just an observation from my back deck.

My Grandfather was in the sheep industry his whole life, so you probably know where I am going with this. Coyotes are huge killer of fawns! I might add bears also. Coyotes will take down bucks worn down after the rut as well, no problem. When the snow crusts up watch out! It is a killing...

    Lion Kill - Northwest Colo

LAST EDITED ON Aug-18-15 AT 10:31PM (MST)[p]Right off side of road, ravens and one magpie all that were left. Looks pretty fresh and all ate up! Younger buck, judging by hoof size, not a bad rack!

Appreciate the offer, I will take you up on it. It is a unique place. Visited last year to get the lay of the land. On ranch fields could see a herd of deer a herd of antelope and a herd of cow elk at the same time...

    17 Colo deer pts

LAST EDITED ON Feb-13-15 AT 11:20PM (MST)[p]okiecat, I have a honey hole in 21 that few know about, it is hidden, most hunters drive by it and we have seen some super good bucks in. Nothing like having a 30" plus buck just standing there looking at you, at 50 yards. He has never ever been shot...

I know a unit that doesn't take any points that has some monsters. But I am not sharing. Very familiar with Unit 21 and I don't like it anymore. To many tags being given out. If you a medium sized buck go for it... If you do decide on Unit 21 let me know. Good luck.

    Muzzy Rain

Well, combine rain with fog, wind and no visibilty and above 11,000 feet in area with cliffs not a good combination. We are simply unable to hunt at times like this. We have delayed our departure this year and it hurts. Not sure how deep the creek crossings are either, as there has been...

    Disappointed - scouting unit21

Yes, they tend to head for cover before sun is up much. They'll get into a day bed and sometimes just about disappear. Beds can be deep and used year after year. We watch them move and wouldn't know where they located if we hadn't caught them early. There is a lot of cover and I would be...

    Disappointed - scouting unit21

So, you must have been on top of Cathedral Bluffs or east of Douglas pass? Some days are better than others and I am not sure why. It must be heat and water availability. I assume you were up early on the sagebrush tops?

    Disappointed - scouting unit21

With the time you have that will make all the difference! I would rather have time than any other resource. With two weeks time before season find a buck or bucks in an area that works for you. Try to get a pattern, where they day bed and where they may come to water. Not sure how spot and...
