    Oryx hunt RC Jan 18

Nice work. I live in Alamogordo and can vouch for that wind and dust!

    Who?s getting rain?

We have had some sort of rain every day for the past three here in Alamogordo, and it is raining lightly again this morning. The Lincoln N.F. lifted fire restrictions yesterday.

Barbary Sheep hunt in Units 32, 34, 36-37

Big Daddy, did your son score? I notice the OTC section in Unit 34 is between West Side Road (USFS Road 90) and, basically, Alamogordo. I haven't seen any yet in that ribbon of tortured, vertical canyonland, but I would sure want help getting one out of the cactus and Spanish daggers in there.

    New Mexico McGregor Oryx

Foldem, congratulations on a fine bull. And good for you for doing that serious range work before your hunt so that you could make the shot you had to make. I'll bet 90 percent of hunters would have blown off the prep work.

    4 in 4 years Unit 32

What do you think of them as table fare? I hear some people rave about the meat and others just make salami.

Population management... Is it working as is or is there a need for change?

Does anyone know if staff from NMDGF monitor this forum? It seems to be the policy of a number of departments of fish and game to discourage staff from posting or responding on hunting forums, but I have seen it occasionally and it sure is nice to get the sense that someone at the local DGF is...

    ANOTHER BREAK IN

LAST EDITED ON Feb-23-18 AT 11:02AM (MST)[p]Here I am in Oregon reading this and knowing my Subaru is parked in the credit card lot at ABQ Sunport. Sure hope they patrol that like they say they do. Curious which La Quinta is the one that gets hit so often.

    Anyone scoring on quail?

Thought I would kick this back out one more time. If anyone can point me in a general direction within a couple of hours of Alamogordo where an old, dogless hunter might step on a few, I'd be a friend for life.

    Youth Javelina

New to New Mexico, so I can't be much help. But you just know that if you leave your shotgun home you will surely be wading in quail. :-)

    Opinion of WT taking over

Reuben, I don't think that's unreasonable at all. Not a thing wrong with trying to keep New Mexico game populations "as they were" in the face of an invader. Think feral swine.

    Opinion of WT taking over

LAST EDITED ON Dec-19-17 AT 03:10PM (MST)[p]I am not sure whitetails are more "aggressive" than mule deer. I have always heard they are more adaptable to different habitat, and that they are much more tolerant of human activity. They can live out their lives on a few acres of home ground, and...

    Opinion of WT taking over

What changes in land use, ecosystems and/or deer management practices are driving this "takeover"?

    It's Been Tough Waiting, But..

Oh man, venison in the freezer. Envious!

    Amanda?s big mule deer.

The words "muy grande" certainly apply here! What did that bruiser weigh field dressed?

    Albuquerque man MURDERED

A dark and bitter cloud, this holiday season. Really sorry for you and your family. Hope for an early arrest in the case -- and answers for you.

You are indeed a good man, Mr. Groves.

Any buck is a trophy with a muzzleloader, and that one is a real dandy. Glad your hard work paid off so handsomely.

    NM game and fish roadblock

Elkfanatic, I did not see a CWD checkpoint there, but I did see one set up on the road to Sunspot a few weeks ago.

    Cross Bow Questions

I am new to these too, having lived most of my life in a state where they were illegal for about everything. Just getting my feet wet, but I am hearing negatives about the less-expensive Barnetts, better things about PSE and very good things about the 10-Points and easy-to-maintain reflex...

    Anyone scoring on quail?

I'm a retired guy still recovering from back surgery, and doubt I can go 2 miles, so I guess I am out for the season! Really good to hear you fellas are scaring up a few birds.

    Anyone scoring on quail?

Congratulations on finding birds -- and for taking your youngsters with you!

    Anyone scoring on quail?

Good luck, cmac. I was chatting with some fellas at a Mesilla Valley Flyfishers get-together yesterday near El Paso and the word seemed to be that numbers are down in this part of the state, too. I'm sure there are pockets of birds for the experienced hunters who know where to look, but it...

    Anyone scoring on quail?

I see the season opened Wednesday. Just thought I would ask if anyone has had a chance to hunt them yet.

    NM game and fish roadblock

LAST EDITED ON Nov-13-17 AT 06:05AM (MST)[p]Seems someone brought this up here a while back. Well, I was fooling around in the Sacramentos south of Cloudcroft yesterday, and when I came down Highway 24 from Weed to where it joins Highway 130 on the Rio Pe?asco, there were about a half-dozen game...

Always a wonderful thing to see a young lady have a successful hunt. She is our future!

Nice bull indeed. He will make for some fine eating. Congratulations for getting it done with a muzzleloader.

    Alamogordo-area gunsmith?

New here, so was wondering if anyone has a favorite -- or one to avoid.

    Feral pigs

Searched here and did not find much information, but Googling wild hogs in New Mexico suggests they are a problem over in the Pecos and Canadian basins. I won't qualify for a New Mexico resident hunting license until about New Years, and was thinking that putting some wild pork in the freezer...

Moving to New Mexico--- where to start!?

Thanks to all who posted on this thread. I moved from Oregon to Alamogordo last week, and look forward to having my residency in time for the 2018 draws. Already been up to Sacramento, south of Cloudcroft, looking for the old family ranch area. Saw a lot of deer, but no elk. Nice country for sure!

X Bows allowed during archery season??????????

Got a kick out of the atlatl comment. I have built and used atlatls for years and would likely go hungry most of the time if I was restricted to an atlatl and dart to harvest game. Tough technology to master. As to crossbows, they apparently date back to the 6th century Before Christ...

    Montezuma quail

Paul, sounds like they are a bit like chukars, the bird you famously hunt the first time for sport and thereafter for revenge.

    Montezuma quail

Thanks fellas. Allen, that's great advice about safe gun handling for behind-the-line flushes.

    Montezuma quail

I have heard these birds are worthy opponents and tough to hunt. Love to hear from those here who have put a few in the old bird vest. Do they favor a particular type of terrain/habitat?

    2017 Barbary Sheep Hunt

LAST EDITED ON Aug-09-17 AT 10:42AM (MST)[p]Was just going to ask about Barbary sheep, as I will be moving to Alamo this fall and GMU 34. Hope to chase these at least once. Looked into edibility and found this...

    muzzy advise

I know it is almost unheard of, but you can also kill a bull with a .54 patched round ball and 120 grains of FFg from a traditional, iron-sighted ML out to about 125 yards or so.

    My first oryx

Agree about the quality of oryx meat. When I hunted plains game in Namibia in 2007, our PH told me it was just about everyone's favorite meat, and there was no reason to mess with beef if you had oryx/gemsbok you could harvest. Nothing like backstraps fresh off the braai and a couple of cold...

    NM Wolves and the ESA

Interesting thread, gentlemen. Similar concerns here in Oregon as the wolves continue to spread -- and especially that the libs and huggers will not allow sound science to govern management.

    2017 South African Safari

Good stuff! Love that hartebeest. I was fortunate to do plains game in Namibia in 2007. Hope to go back one more time!

    Dogs for the desert

CMAC, I think I saw that sweet video at Versatile Dogs. I started a thread on closer-working dogs there. My issue is that after a second back surgery I can't walk as far or as fast as I used to. Having to hurry to a point a half-mile off just may not be in my cards anymore. Sure admire your dogs!
