We have had some sort of rain every day for the past three here in Alamogordo, and it is raining lightly again this morning. The Lincoln N.F. lifted fire restrictions yesterday.

Big Daddy, did your son score? I notice the OTC section in Unit 34 is between West Side Road (USFS Road 90) and, basically, Alamogordo. I haven't seen any yet in that ribbon of tortured, vertical canyonland, but I would sure want help getting one out of the cactus and Spanish daggers in there.

Foldem, congratulations on a fine bull. And good for you for doing that serious range work before your hunt so that you could make the shot you had to make. I'll bet 90 percent of hunters would have blown off the prep work.

What do you think of them as table fare? I hear some people rave about the meat and others just make salami.

Does anyone know if staff from NMDGF monitor this forum? It seems to be the policy of a number of departments of fish and game to discourage staff from posting or responding on hunting forums, but I have seen it occasionally and it sure is nice to get the sense that someone at the local DGF is...

New to New Mexico, so I can't be much help. But you just know that if you leave your shotgun home you will surely be wading in quail. :-)

Reuben, I don't think that's unreasonable at all. Not a thing wrong with trying to keep New Mexico game populations "as they were" in the face of an invader. Think feral swine.

Searched here and did not find much information, but Googling wild hogs in New Mexico suggests they are a problem over in the Pecos and Canadian basins. I won't qualify for a New Mexico resident hunting license until about New Years, and was thinking that putting some wild pork in the freezer...

Thanks to all who posted on this thread. I moved from Oregon to Alamogordo last week, and look forward to having my residency in time for the 2018 draws. Already been up to Sacramento, south of Cloudcroft, looking for the old family ranch area. Saw a lot of deer, but no elk. Nice country for sure!

Got a kick out of the atlatl comment. I have built and used atlatls for years and would likely go hungry most of the time if I was restricted to an atlatl and dart to harvest game. Tough technology to master. As to crossbows, they apparently date back to the 6th century Before Christ...

I know it is almost unheard of, but you can also kill a bull with a .54 patched round ball and 120 grains of FFg from a traditional, iron-sighted ML out to about 125 yards or so.

Agree about the quality of oryx meat. When I hunted plains game in Namibia in 2007, our PH told me it was just about everyone's favorite meat, and there was no reason to mess with beef if you had oryx/gemsbok you could harvest. Nothing like backstraps fresh off the braai and a couple of cold...

CMAC, I think I saw that sweet video at Versatile Dogs. I started a thread on closer-working dogs there. My issue is that after a second back surgery I can't walk as far or as fast as I used to. Having to hurry to a point a half-mile off just may not be in my cards anymore. Sure admire your dogs!
