It’s time for a real discussion

In whitetail deer I remember there was concern in some population in regards to the buck/doe ratio…basically once it dropped too low…yes the majority of does were bred…but a percentage were bred late or very late….like second or third rut…which led to fawns being born late the next year and...

Changing My Tune on Western Wyoming Mule Deer

Non resident tags in Region G have been less than 10% for some years….historical data posted by WY G&F note 5000+ residents and 400 non residents (less for 2023 with tag reduction).

50 less NR tags in G

The writing has be on the wall for the past two decades. Up through 2003 there were 1600 NR tags for Region G. Fast forward to about 2017 there were multiple cuts which ultimately brought it down to 400 NR tags. Now it looks like 350 is proposed for fall 2023. Won’t be long until you will need...

    Selling “hunt consultation” packages?

So curious what is the current line in sand for what is permissible for an individual to sell hunting information packages in WY without being a registered/licensed guide/outfitter in the state? I know Founder has history with this topic but I lost track on the details on the law and any...

    Airline Travel/Hunting Trip

I’ve rental mid sized SUVs for two weeks plus for $450 to $650 in SLC, Boise, and Jackson hole over the past 10 years. Always try to use enterprise because their service is the best but sometime they are pricey and need to use a different company. Need to check rates at different times as they...

    Idaho Unit 48 Muledeer

It started going down hill ten to fifteen years ago and it really pains me to see how it continues to get even worse over the years. Some awesome mule deer country but the herd is sad and buck numbers and age pitiful.

    Airline Travel/Hunting Trip

See if a SUV rental would work. Usually much cheaper than a truck every time I’ve looked. That’s all I’ve used over the years and it’s been fine for me, plus I often sleep in the back with the rear seats down.

Archery elk hunting in 77 and 78

I’ve hunted deer and scouted in those general areas....I’ve seen some elk but numbers are very low...and I’ve never seen a mature bull...I would never bother to hunt archery or rifle elk based on what I’ve seen...there are better areas in the state for sure

80/20 split, for Nonres/res in every state

85/15 But of the 85%, split those into 75% of that allocation going to residents that reside in the counties where tags are good for, and 25% of that allocation going to residents that reside in other counties within the state... Trophy species with less than 1000 tags available statewide...

    90/10 not going away...

just going to throw out an opinion I know will ruffle some feathers...but for sheep, mtn goat, and moose, all tags in all western states should only be allocated to residents. Yes I’m a non resident that applies for these in some states, and this would screw me over. But I think it’s only fair...

    Deer moving from opener storms?

Of course not all the deer migrate early...otherwise harvest in those units would be very low and everyone would quit hunting there unless the season dates were adjusted by F&G. Plenty of deer are seen and many bucks are taken after October 10th.

    Deer moving from opener storms?

Anyone know if the F&G still radio collar and track deer? I know about ten years ago they did this, had does in unit 43 collared, tracked them high up in summer, then like clockwork they all migrated south into unit 44 before or during the first week of October.

    SE hunt

Only advice I can offer is to find a good vantage point where you can see some good deer country....sit there and glass, then glass some more...then repeat. I've never been a huge fan of walking around unless you really know the area well, it will just put the deer on high alert as they usually...

General deer - who?s headed out?

Good luck to everyone headed out for the opener tomorrow. I just spent a couple days in the central part of the state, backpacked in but didn't see jack squat so came out to relocate. Not a big surprise as I've never seen many deer in this particular area. Weather looks messy for some areas...

    Weather in Fairfield

Just drove through Fairfield, wintry mix today along highway. Snow on mountains but barely sticking in lower elevation. Visibility not good for glassing far. Looks likes some areas will see rain, mix, or snow for opening day of general season in nearby units tomorrow.

Cabelas brand gear guarantee being eliminated?

I returned a pair of Meindl boots, started leaking the third season. No questions asked, they gave me a brand new pair. Seems like some folks have had issues with returns though. I will say I had a massive customer service issue with cabelas a few years ago - made a huge purchase and found out...

Cabelas brand gear guarantee being eliminated?

I've read/heard that 1) the bargain caves in the retail stores are being eliminated, and 2) the Cabelas legendary brand guarantee is being eliminated at the end of 2018 since they are now owned by bass pro. Has anyone heard similar? Thoughts?

    Grizz hunting is over

Since it appears this years hunt might not happen...why doesn't someone get in touch with that GoFundMe group, the one that raised tens of thousands $$$ for non hunters to get a grizz tag (and photograph the bears) and ask them to donate that money to the family of the guide that was recently...

    NOT Burned Out

Founder, have you thought about just going up to WY anyway? You could go and just not hunt, or maybe find someone that needs a non-hunting buddy? Would still be a lot of fun I bet.

    Idaho Unit 76 and 77

I hunted southeast Idaho up through 2013. Great scenery, phenomenal genetics for mule deer, and some awesome memories, but it just got too crowded for me personally. I can't I imagine what the herd is like after the harsh winter two years ago. Hopefully it will come back. With all that said if...

    Idaho trail riding

I've seen plenty of motorcycle trails that are only for the best of riders, and even some of those are sketchy for skilled operators. I don't think there is any maintenance whatsoever on most trails. Can get serious real quick. >LAST EDITED ON Jul-24-18 >AT 10:43?PM (MST) > >tw (trail...

    BLM Public Accessible Roads

LAST EDITED ON Jul-25-18 AT 06:02AM (MST)[p]I believe you need to be very careful crossing any private land, even if the red line road shows up on a BLM map which crosses over private and into public. Official state and county roads are ok as you mentioned, but anything else could and often is...

    Points Versus No Points

Completely agree that point systems typically do not offer better odds of drawing a tag. But saying that the point system is Utah is why so many Utah hunters go out of state is stretching things. Its more of too much demand for a limited resource, especially when talking mule deer. Utah simply...

Idaho- alice and toxaway loop trail?

That part of the sawtooths is very scenic and a great hiking. That particular trailhead is always busy as it's a very popular hike, even in October. But deer and elk numbers are fairly poor, they are there in low numbers and hard to find. Mountain goats are plentiful if you glass certain peaks...

    Grizz

I saw the gofundme stuff. Those folks have to be morons. If enough grizzlies aren't harvested this season (because some tags went to folks that won't use them), then the WY game dept just increases the quota/tags next year to make up for it, and they'd be justified based on the harvest and...

    Trophy Species

LAST EDITED ON May-31-18 AT 08:11PM (MST)[p]A few dollars? I guess you are clueless as to the convenience fee then. It's a percentage of the tag cost, 3%, plus $3.50. So it's like $70 extra for a non resident OIL tag. It takes me ten minutes to fill in the extra easy paper app, slip it in an...

    36a mule deer

36a has great country for deer but the general hunt in mid October wasn?t exactly a producer of lots of buck before the harsh winter took its toll. Let's hope for at least several years of easy winters to try and rebuild what was there.
  39. H

    Trophy Species

I still do the paper application due to the rediculous convenience fee that really adds up when you are paying $2k plus for the tag and they charge a percentage to use a credit card. I'd love for them to make it easier but after seeing what has happened in Colorado this year I'll gladly stick...

Big 3 - pref and bonus points

Seems like with the huge influx of new applicants this year for the big 3 the system of 3 pref points + bonus points is going to become senseless in a few years. I realize this is relatively new since the drawing recaps just came out but has there been any thought or discussion in changing the...
