LAST EDITED ON Oct-21-08 AT 11:25PM (MST)[p]This hunt started for me around eleven o clock one night when my friend luke called to inform me that he had drawn a great elk tag in new mexico. Since i am hunting something every chance i get, i was pretty excited at the opportunity to tag along.

Luke, Luke's dad Sam and I left central utah early saturday morning seven days before the hunt started. We wanted to get some good scouting in and hopefully locate a trophy bull. Due to some unforseen problems it took us nearly 15 hours to reach our destination. We pulled into soccorro and met up with Chet, a friend of luke. Being a local and knowing the area very well Chet was a huge asset and we really appreciated his help.

Sunday morning we woke up to rain and fog. .

We headed out with Chet to look at the unit and try and get a feel for where we wanted to hunt. We hiked up some good canyons, got soaking wet and seen six cows with one spike. When we were headed back out we ran across a camp that had a really nice 6x7 that a youth hunter had taken. It was encouraging to see such a great bull and it made it even better that a fifteen year old kid was lucky enough to take it.

We then went and met up with Daniel. Daniel is one of Chet's friends and both of his sons had drawn youth tags for the unit. We decided to spend the evening trying to help the youth hunters connect on a bull. Right away we spotted a decent six point.

We hurried and moved into position. He was able to get ten yards from the bull but due to the thick trees he didn't have a shot. The wind shifted and off they went.

Monday morning both of the youth hunters were able to get on elk but due to a little buck fever and some less then perfect shooting they weren't able to take home an elk.

That afternoon we finished setting up our camp and decided to go check out the high country. .

Tuesday Morning me and Luke hiked up a fenceline into the wilderness area that Chet had told us about. As we were making our way up towards the peak we spotted some small grey dots in the early morning glow. They were a ways away but i think they were coues deer. We hiked into a saddle and glassed the north facing hillside. We spotted five cows and as we were moving to get a different angle i thought for a second i could see antlers sneaking through the trees but he never came into view.

Tuesday evening I hiked into an area where Daniel and his boys had seen a decent bull during the youth hunt and luke hiked into an area where we had heard a few bugles sunday evening. I glassed until dark and as it started to get dark a small five point came into view. When i met up with luke he had seen a few quail and no elk.

Although we weren't seeing the elk we had hoped for we were also hunting bears. I can't even believe all the bear sign we seen.

Wednesday morning we hiked back up the fenceline further into the wilderness area. We were lucky enough to spot a small five point with a group of cows. Although he was definately not the bull we were after we were in hopes that a bigger bull might come and take the cows. Then we hiked into a small hidden spring that Chet had told us about. Although we didn't see any elk we jumped a giant muley buck!

Wednesday evening we met up with Chet and his son in law cole and scouted a different mountain range. We got up high to glass. The country is beautiful but we didn't spot an elk all evening.

Thursday morning we headed to a new area to look at some different country. We found a bunch of bear sign, some elk sign but no elk. We found a really neat cabin and windmill. The water hole next to the cabin was loaded with small toads.

Thursday evening we went over to the other mountain range. The three of us sat different areas hoping to cover as much country as possible and hopefully get a shooter bull spotted. I had been glassing for a few hours when i noticed a dark spot moving. I could tell it was a bear so i hurried and moved the scope onto it. Since it was on top of a rockslide at about 9000 feet i was content just watching it even though i was really hoping we could connect on a bear. Unfortunately i wasn't able to spot a single elk in that canyon but i was lucky enough to photograph several antelope.

I was hoping that luke or sam had spotted something. I met up with sam and he had only seen a couple muleys. We drove down the road a ways to where we were supposed to meet Luke. He wasn't there so we waited a few minutes. It was well past dark and i noticed a small light flashing way up on the ridge Luke had hiked up to glass. He was a long ways away but i could barely hear him yell find this road. Panic instanly set in as me and sam franticly tried to locate the old mining road he was standing on. After several dead ends we were finally on the right road. We were fearing the worst that maybe he had broken his leg or been bitten by one of the many snakes in the area. We finally reached him and he appeared to be fine. He got in the truck and told us that he had accidently walked right into a rattlesnake denning area and after seeing ten snakes and one near miss he wisely decided to not continue hiking. He had seen a shooter bull but we put the bull on the back burner until the weather cooled hopefully pushing the snakes into their den.

Friday morning. It was down to the last day of scouting so we went to a promising area to glass. We spotted six bulls and no cows. The rut was very odd. We hadn't heard many bugles several of the bulls we were seeing were in bachelor groups and a few of the groups of cows didn't have any bulls.

That evening we glassed different areas. I spotted 5 small bulls and luke seen a big five point pushing close to 20 cows. Although he was acting rutty he refused to bugle.

Sam had been talking to an outfitter who had just seen a giant bear. He said it looked like a volkswagon with hair. So the quest for the VW bear began and sam was bound and determined to get the giant bear.

Opening morning we woke up to thick fog and lots of rain. .

We headed out anyways hoping the fog would clear. We got into position and after about an hour the fog finally started to lift. Immediately Luke spotted a single cow so we watched for a few minutes and a decent sized five point came over the ridge. He wasn't the bull we were after but it was encouraging to see him right off the bat opeing morning.

We moved to a different area and started glassing a large drainage when i noticed five cows moving across a valley. Soon after that there was another group of cows. We watched as they came out of a draw single file. Finally after about fifteen cows out walked giant bull. I nearly tipped the scope over when i got a look at those huge antlers. He had great mass, long points, good beams and looked to be atleast fifty inches wide. We watched until they went over the ridge out of sight and planned a route to where we thought they would bed.

As we were hiking towards the bedding area it began to rain. The rain lasted about ten minutes and we pressed on. We hiked up to a peak to where we thought we would be able to watch the elk get out of bed and hopefully be in range for a shot. About that time it started to rain again. We were in a downpoor like i have never seen before. Although we had rain gear it wasn't long and everything was soaked.

We had been sitting in the rain freezing cold and soaking wet and all i could think is that a chicken has a head smaller then a walnut and its even smart enough to get out of the rain. When the rain would let up and the howling wind would slow down a few elk here and there would get up to shake off like dogs. Throughout the day we were able to see several elk and a few small bulls but the giant bull never showed himself.

As opening day came to a close i was hudled under a small tree shivering, wet and miserable. I wondered if we had made the right choice in staying there all day.

Sunday moring our packs boots and everything else we owned was still dripping wet so we just did some glassing from the truck. As soon as our equipment dried we hiked way into the wilderness area behind where we had seen the giant bull. We could glass a ton of country and it looked promising that we might turn something up.

We had been glassing off the top for about five hours and only spotted a three cows and a spike and several muleys. Things weren't looking good and all the sudden we heard a weak bugle right behind us. With adrenaline pumping we hurried and got our stuff together and moved towards the bugle. We listened for a few minutes and he wasn't talking so luke let out a few soft cow calls. The bull answered so luke got into position to make a shot and i moved back to call. The bull started answering my cow calls and slowly moved towards us. I could see down into the thick ponderosas and noticed the tan hide of an elk moving through the trees. I watched for a while as he moved in and out of the thick cover. I was finally able to tell that he was so broken all that was left of him was a 5x3. Even though he wasn't what we were looking for it was so exciting to call him.

We moved back on top and continued glassing. The elk started getting up and cows and spikes were on all sides of us.

I had just spotted my seventh spike when luke came over from the other side of the mountain saying that he had a bull spotted worth a second look.

We got the scope set up and it was a pretty decent six point with several cows acting very rutty. I stayed on top to watch and luke hurried down the ridge to get in muzzleloader range of the bull. As i was watching two small raghorns came into view and started fighting. The big bull was hot on a cow but never let out one bugle.

Luke finally came into my field of view and was closing in on the elk perfectly. Everthing was going great as he eased in closer. 150 yds, 75 yds, 40 yds. It was such a rush to watch the stalk and see him get so close to the bull. Due to the thick pinion junipers in the bottom he was having a very hard time getting a clean shot on the bull. When he was getting just under 40 yards the wind shifted and all the elk blew out of there. Secretly i was relieved because i wasn't ready to go home and i was hoping we would have another chance at the giant bull.

Monday morning we were back in the area where the giant bull had been. Shortly after day break we spotted a few cows and the longer we watched the more cows started to appear out of the thick trees. I could see a little bit of antler between the trees and was finally able to see a 300 class broken five by six. We watched them for awhile and couldn't spot a better bull so we snuck out without disturbing them.

That evening we sat different areas and glassed. I didn't see anything and luke spotted about twenty cows with a tiny four point. We were starting to worry because our short hunt was coming to an end.

Tuesday morning when we woke up the fog was so thick we could barely see our fire pit. The fog finally lifted around ten in the morning and all day we only seen two spikes and one big five point right at dark. I am still amazed at the amount of spikes and five points we seen during this hunt. I know that the area has good genetics and is known for trophy bulls but i think we caught it on a bad year like much of the western states.

We seen a bunch of rubs like this on cactus. One of the bulls killed in the area had some cactus and spines mashed into his antlers. It looked pretty cool.

Wednesday. The last day. We had been glassing since it was barely light enough to see and had only located 10 cows. We were starting to feel the pressure! For the evening we moved to a different area and hiked up a ridgeline glassing along the way. We made it to the very top and had been glassing for a while but hadn't seen anything. Even though we had basically given up on the rut luke decided to throw out a few cow calls and see what happend. He called a couple times and almost instantly we could hear an animal coming up the steep draw below us.

Luke hurried and got his gun ready. Even though i didn't have a tag my heart was pumping out of my chest! The animal was coming in fast and i could see part of his tan body closing in on our position. There was a tiny opening about fifteen yards in front of us and the bull was headed straight for it. The hair was standing up on the back of my neck when out walked . . . a spike. I couldn't help but laugh. There we were in the last hour of our hunt and out walks a spike. The littly guy still hadn't seen us and eventually made it to less then five yards looking for that cow he had heard. I'll never forget the look in his eyes when luke's binoculars slid to the side and he realized the jig was up.

As we walked off the long ridge in the fading light i had a good chance to reflect on everything that had happened on this hunt. What a great experience! I have never had such an awesome time eating tag soup. We seen some beautiful country, tons of divers animals, met some really great people and got to spend time doing what we love. It doesn't get any better then that.

These grasshoppers were huge. I'm pretty sure this one will make boone and crocket.
