I thought this might occupy some time while I'm waiting for the NM drawing results. Anybody out there have a deer slam (mulie, whitetail, coues and blacktail)?

Three quarters of the way there with:
quite a few Muledeer from Wahington & California;
quite a few Blacktail from Washington & California
and a couple Whitetail from Washington & Wisconsin

...just started putting in for Couse this year. Although, I'm just a hunter who enjoys hunting and not on some kind of Grand Slam quest or anything...

You're right, I guess a "collection" wouldn't be truely complete with out at least one Sitka and one Columbian. Although the blackies I've killed in Washington were very different looking than the blackies from California and the northern california blackies even look different than the blackies farther south along the south central coast. They're an interesting species for sure.

Ive shot Muleys and blacktails in Washington and whitetail in montana, no coues and probably never will.

I'm almost there. All with my bow. Ed F

Mule Deer - Ca, Co, Ut, Az, Wy & Nm
Whitetail Deer - Co
Columbia Blacktail Deer - Ca
Sitka Blacktail Deer - Ak
Coues Whitetail Deer - ?

I've got Columbia, Cascade and Sitka Blacktails, Rock Mtn Mulies, Western Mountain Whitetail and South Eastern Whitetail, but no Coues yet!!!! But I am working on it!!!! I would love to draw a tag for a Columbian Whitetail! That would be sweeeeet!

No grand slam for me....yet. Just blacktails and mule deer. Every time I think about coues or whitetails, it means I would have to wait another year for a "chance" at a BIG mule deer. Sometime in the future perhaps....

I'm 3/4 there, have a muley, blacktail and whitetail all from Oregon, missing the coues, something to look at in the future. It would be a great wall in the trophy room with a good sample of all 4.

No slam. And not much desire. I'll probably stick with chasing big mule deer until I either win the lottery or get more time. I've got some blacktails and a couple of whitetails plus mule deer from several states. Maybe someday I'll get the grey ghost, too.

I guess I'm the only one so far that has..was not really trying for one, I am working on the elk and Carabou...

Mule deer - Utah, Montana, Wyoming
Whitetail - Arkansas, Texas, Montana, Alberta
Blacktail - Oregon
Coues - Arizona, Old Mexico
Sitka - Alaska

I need a Tule elk for the elk slam, either have to move to California for that one or buy a landowner permit.

A Poler Bear for the Bear slam, As soon as they allow importation into the lower 48 I will work on him.

2 more Carabou for that slam, I have the Barren Ground and Mountain Carabou's already.

Need a Shiras Moose and I will have that one wrapped up, maybe Utah and Wyoming will cough up a tag before long.

Might have to add another one to the slam list soon. I heard they were going to open Columbian white-tail in WA but couldn't find anything in the regs. I've seen some trophys down on the river.

There are actually 6 species for the North American Deer Slam. The Whitetail, Coues, Rocky Mountain Mule Deer, Desert Mule Deer, Sitka Blacktail, and Columbian Blacktail.
I am halfway there (whitetail, coues, RM mule deer), I hope to have it done within the next few years. I have a great spot in my house that I'd like to line them all up on the same wall. My wife just rolls her eyes. :)

All Deer slams now lack one Deer and it is going to be the most difficult tag in the world to draw. That would be the addition of the Columbian Blacktail found in Oregon. LOP tags start at 5k and go up. So slams are now lacking that one animal.

Lien2- isn't the slam you're describing a SCI and not B&C slam? I didn't realize that B&C/P&Y recognized desert mulies. I may be wrong though.

High Desert- did you mean Columbian whitetail?

Well Im close, Still need a Coues. I've got several Sitka's from Kodiak, Whitetails from Montana and Oregon, A few Blacktails from Cal, Lots of Mulies from Oregon, nevada,Idaho,Wyoming and Montana. All unguided!! Got Max deer points in Az but just can't waste them on a Coues. So I'll just have to save for Mexico.

We have four of the five official deer slam species living here in BC. Can kill all with over the counter tags. I have killed many muleys and several whitetails. Might try for a Columbian Blacktail in the next year or two. Have been invited on a Sitka trip this year but probably won't have time to go. Will do it one day soon though.
Coues is the only part of the deer slam I probably will never hunt. Don't really care too.
There are several subspecies of muleys and whitetails. Many of those subspecies are not included as part of the Deer Slam. Why? Ranges overlap and many can not be distinguished in the field. Really, how many can tell the difference between Odocoileus virginianus ochrourus and Odocoileus virginianus dacotensis?

If you guys are interested in Deer slams, you should study the father of slams.
Jay Gates took the 5 deer slam, 8 years in a row. Most of which were self guided, & Trophy bucks.
He was a little possesed in his younger days.
But he is still the best & most knowledgeable deer hunter of ALL spiecies around today.

how close can you get in one state. i got both muley and whitetail in idaho. i think that is as far as i can go. oregon and washington could go for three. but cant get them all in one state i dont think
Muley Man!

I completed my slam three years ago. Final deer was the coues. My slam was self guided for all 5 B&C deer and I have a desert muley if thats the 6th deer. I have always looked up to Jay Gates, this man is untouchable with what he has accomplished. I have his book because Couesnut talked Jay into giving me one. Anyway the slam is a cool thing to shoot for and I would love to get a Columbian Whitetail tag like Eric mentioned above.............. Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Hunt4lyf -
You may be correct on the SCI Deer slam vs. the B&C. I will do some research when I get a chance. It seems to me most things I've read about the NA Deer Slam involved 6 deer (2 types of whitey's, 2 types of muleys, and 2 types of Blacktail). I just thought it made sense.
If I find anything more out, I'll post it.

Well you can get the columbian whitie for around $35,000. I was bidding for a guy to get a Oregon statewide deer tag at a FNAWS banquet and got beat out by a guy wanting it for the Columbian. He paid $34,000.

It looks like the 6th deer (desert Muley) is for the SCI deer slam. I couldn't find anything on the B&C "requirements", but I read one place that the crooki is a seperate species required for the SCI, so I'm assuming it's not for B&C.
Ah heck, I plan on getting it anyway, then I can say I have both the SCI and B&C deer slams. Less confusing that way. :)

In BC you can actually take 4 of the 6 deer in the slam (I include the desert muley, although B&C doesn't have a separate category for it) IN THE SAME YEAR. I have a "half slam" so far - rocky mountain mule deer, columbian blacktail and whitetail, and have taken all three in the same year in BC. Now you guys have given me an idea. I think I'll have to try for a "BC Deer slam" (all four in one season), maybe even this year. :)

I agree that Jay Gates' accomplishment are amazing. I picked up his book "Bucks I have Taken" a couple months ago. It's a good read.

Now thats impressive Bura Nut! A Self-Guided Deer Slam.... My hat is off to ya. I think a lot more credit goes to those DIY hunters.....

I've killed plenty of whitetails with bow/rifle/muzzy, not as many muleys but with all three weapons, two blacktails with rifle, and one coues with my bow in Arizona. I/ve also got a cross-breed muley/whitetail. I would like to get a moose with my bow, but we'll see if I can draw the tag first.

No slam yet,

Have several Rocky Mountain Muley's with rifle, handgun, and bow.

Load's of Texas Whitetailwith rifle, and bow.

Plus two smallish Coues in unit36a, one little 10 pointer and one small forky in the January bow hunt.

All but the coues. I have it in shed antlers, but have never hunted coues before. Someday for sure.
