After missing out on the Wyoming archery bull elk season, my brother invited me to go along on the general rifle hunt with him. Oh man what a hunt it turned out to be!
The first three days of the hunt it snowed! The clouds hung low and the hunting was pretty tough because we couldn't glass the high country. It also made for some fun 4x4 wheeling.
After the clouds rose on day four we decided to do some hiking...LOL. Next time we will rent horses! Our legs payed for the determination of our souls to get in the high country and find ELK!

With the elk staying high and the weather turning hot again we were getting desperate to find a bull. We decided they were probabbly "balling up" in the dark timber and our only chance to find some elk was going to be cow calling and determination.....

Horses are a wonderful creation we realized and my brother's ever so friendly neighbor offered to take us into the high country on horse back.. God bless him! After a 2 hour trail ride we got high up on a ridge and let out a couple mews on the primos double cow call and were elated when we heard the lonely bugle of a bull way off in the distance. Instantly we started frantically scanning the vast expanse of the hill side before us and bingo! My brother spotted them 1200 yards away....now what?

After about an hour of watching the heard of about 25 elk we decided to get a closer look at the bull that had bugled to our calling....the only problem was that in order to do this we had to descend the ridge we were on and then go back up the other side....1500 verticle ft. down the 1500 verticle ft. back up to the elk!......again the determination over took the bodies hesitation and off we went! 2 1/2 hrs. later we could smell that unmistakenly rank odor of elk! But we couldn't see them...SO my brother says to me." give out a cow call". Instantly 100yds. down hill a bull bugled! In October mind you..we couldn't believe hw responsive this bull was being to the cow calls, so i gave it another couple of seductive whines on the double and sure enough he coudn't take it! As we were scanning the hll side below suddenly I caught movement through the aspens and in the nick of time we froze! The bull had started moving his cows in our direction and they were 40yrd. away! After what seemed like an eternity the bull came in to view. Dang it if he wasn't the monster bull we thought we would encounter once we made it over here to the elk! Never the less we had worked hard and werent about to leave the mountain without blood on our hands. Thats about the time music rang from his 300 wthby! at 25 yds. instantly all the elk freaked and I began calling with the cow call and the elk stopped right at our feet! Again wonderful music rang from his rifle and then the elk vanished. All but the bull that had so willingly come to the sound of what he thought was a girlfriend ready to dance...

The bull didn't go 20yds. and piled up. We celebrated and cheered! After cleaning the bull we devised a plan to cover the bull with fresh pine bows and come back the next day and try to get the horses to the elk....LOL. It had turned dark and we were 2 1/2 hrs. back to the trail where our new found friends Tom and Don were going to build a fire and wait for us to get back and then we would ride out. We arrived back to the trail head and the ever welcome sight of the trucks at 12 midnight! Whew.
8 horses and a 12 hour horse back ride later that ""Bull Gone Wild" was in the back of a pick-up and headed for town....What an adventure and wonderful time we had! Thanks bro. for letting me be there for the fun! Here are a few pics.....
