Fellow Muley Fanatics,

My hunting partner and I drew the Owyhee Unit rifle tag this year and have some time to scout the area before the season opens. I'm not prying for anyone's "honey hole" but would appreciate any general info that might be helpful. I have seen some great bucks in this country in November/December while chukar hunting and have wondered if they actually are resident deer, or if they migrate over from Idaho when the late rut hunt opens in Unit 40 (right on the border).

The biggest question, which will probably be answered after a few scouting trips, is what caliber of buck would be a "good" buck in this country. I have seen some 28-30 inch bucks in here in December, but they are rare and to find them in October could be pretty difficult, if they even reside there.

We drew Malheur river a few years back and saw several 24-26 inch bucks, which is what we ended up taking. Becuase the draw odds are a little tougher in Owyhee and some of the country is more rugged, I expect there could be some nice bucks in here, if a person could just find them.

Sorry for rambling, but I should have ample time to hunt this year and want to make the best of it. Most of you will understand the bug we muley fanatics have caught.

Thanks in advance for any and all help. Send me a personal mail or use my hotmail account if you prefer.

Best of luck to all.

Monty the Owyhee has some outrageous deer in it but alas you know what the country is like If you get down deep in the canyons there are some Monster Muleys. I would expect to see the same caliber deer that you saw in the Malheur Unit when you had it. But if you can hunt the breaks of the Owyhee and scout them there are some tremendous animals.
Good Luck
Dave
