It all started Dejevew Friday night at a high school foot ball game but instead of playing he was referring. We left late after the game and arrived in camp about 1.30 am, as we were setting up camp a bull was bugling just on the ridge above us . The heart to say the least began to pump and the excitement of the morning hunt began to build. It had been years we had waited for my son and I to finally hunt General season bull elk together. He was an athlete a letterman in four sports in high school and lived out of state, so the timing and scheduling just never seemed to work. We have hunted over the years in 3 different states killing many great deer antelope and Cow Elk. But the elusive bull elk was a prize we just could not schedule. He moved to Utah 3 years ago played ball at CEU then took a job and got married .But again with school and work we just could not get the hunt together. So we tried Bow hunting to no avail we tried the muzzle loader hunts and were skunked. So this year we had decided to try the Utah Spike Bull hunt and at least get an Elk with a horn down. Well we had our tags and were set to go and I just could not sleep at night, so with time remaining I suggested we switch our tags to the general season any bull hunt here in Utah and give it ago ? As the morning drew on the bull continued to bugle just outside camp at one point maybe 100 yards from us, From time to time I would look up from my sleep and there he was dressed boots on and ready to go , Well with an hour until day light I decided might as well get up and begin the chase . We walked out of camp maybe 50 yards and the bull was right there I told my son we would wait until shooting ours and as long as no one pulled into camp we would kill this bull at dawn so we bugled we chirped we had him hot and ready for action . We laid in ambush and waited the rising sun. Then with maybe 10 minutes to go yep you guessed it, in came a rig lights on radio blaring doors slamming , My heart sunk out of my chest as the Bull squealed and he and his cows jumped from 50 yards and took off for the high country .. Well the hunt was on we followed and bugled at times having as many as four different bulls bugling us but they would not come in . We hiked and hunted bugled and called and were close all day but just could not close the Gap. One bull the first played with us all day he bugled us from daylight to dark always staying above us and close. we stalked him we bugled him he followed us all day we went left he went left we went right he went right it was crazy he even followed us back to camp bugling as laughing at us to try again. It rained all night and there was not a peep in the woods and I was discouraged as I have hunted for years in Utah and believed the rut was over after all the day 1 shooting. Well day two and discouraged we headed back in Bugling chirping to no avail woods had gone silent and I believed another year would pass without bull . Well we got to the steep part of the Hill and I told young son today we would separate he was to go high and slab right I would stay lower and slap under him ?. Well off he went and I took a break, at 8.00 am I thought try one last bugle and then start to move so I did and in the distance to the left I got an answer. Would young son here this bull and make an adjustment I thought or would he go with the plan. I moved toward the bull and the bull began to come in hot it was the same bull I am sure that had teased us all day yesterday. I thought great young son will follow the plan I will kill this bull against the plan and have to explain it. Well I set up and began to get the Bull closer When in the distance behind me another bull bugled I answered and he began to come. Now it was me two bulls coming and young son going high and in the wrong direction ? What would he do what would happen. As the bull s got closer and the bugles were on top of each other I prepared for action and then it happened I heard one loud bugle and then a shot and another and other 5 in all maybe 100 yards from me Was it Young Son I thought at first , then the Scream of excitement and conclusion of 12 years of hunting and waiting echoed thru the woods I cant describe how I felt no words can explain it my smile was as big as the state of Utah my heart felt bigger than my chest and I felt a million pounds leave my body as I got up and headed for the kill . When I approached there he was arms in the air fists pumping smile beyond smiles and a dream come true. The Bull was huge for a Utah general tag 320 gross score perfect 6x6 what a bull what a day. MY boy did everything right that day he heard me bugle the bulls he adjusted the hunt plan with out communication he improvised he stayed above me and the bulls to make sure we were not outsmarted again he hit the bull hard all 5 times . And it was my proudest moment ? But above it all it is his safety and ethics when hunting that makes me the proudest He is an awesome young man... He is not only my son and best friend, but he is without question my best and only Hunting Partner
