ELY, Nev. (AP) - State game wardens are searching for poachers
accused of killing four bull elk and one mule deer in White Pine County.

Nevada Department of Wildlife spokesman Edwin Lyngar said all five animals were shot and left to rot during the last three weeks. No meat or trophies were taken.

Lyngar said it was unknown whether all or some of the killings were related.

"At least two of these were thrill kills where spotlights were used," he told the Ely Times. "The waste here is a real problem."

Two of the elk were killed along U.S. 50 west of Ely, one was shot in Cave Valley and the other was killed in the Duck Creek Basin. The 2-point deer was killed near Siegel Creek.

The shootings are under investigation by NDOW.

"This is something that we need (the public's) help with," Lyngar said. "This year in the eastern part of the state there is a whole lot more poaching activity."

I think this was the link.

Now how in the sam hill do they know that spotlights were used? If NDOW knows this then they should have already made an arrest. I sometimes feel that they point the finger to spotlighters to try and take away spotlighting rights away from counties that allow it. I am the first to stand up against poaching and the perp or perps should have their nads cutt off and put in jail. But dont say that it was a spotlighter without some proof.

NDOW is working hard to find the low-life(s) who comitted these sensless killings. When they get caught I am sure they will get the book thrown at them and pay dearly.

I can think of any number of ways that the DOW knows that spotlights were used, one of which could be somebody saw the lights and/or heard the shots after dark 30 and concerned of the elk in the area, called to report the shooting in hopes of catching this poacher. Investigators don't always show all their cards, in fact, they rarely do.

You stated your concern but in comparing yours with that of the investigators, protecting your spotlighting rights takes a back seat to catching this/these scumbag(s). I'd cut the DOW or the author of this piece some slack and not come off to be so self-centered.

Jackrussel, I have a good working relationship with the department but there are some that are anything but ethical in their way of doing things. You have a right to speak your mind don't listen to others. It is up to us to keep them in line the same as them to keep us in line. I hope they catch the scum bags above all.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-04-08 AT 05:15PM (MST)[p]Nobody hopes they get caught any more than I do. I am only trying to make a point. It's like when there is a school shooting or some random act of violence with a gun, all of a sudden it is the guns and gun industry's fault. The same goes with poaching, one always assumes that just because someone spotlights that they poach. You are right NDOW is all we have, and yes I have very little faith in them, some of them do great jobs in their fields of work. But there are some who don't, and we need to keep them in check, as they do us as well. I dont want the retarded act of a few to ruin everyting for everyone else. This country has already let this happen and I dont want this to happen here on this issue.

Long live the modena ghost.

JR, i'm very impressed with your analogy and answer. Obviously, you're closer to the issue than i am. I'll back up off my statement and please pardon my question. Sometimes on issues like this, there can be a valid concern when a person comes off as if he is in defense of the criminal. I don't believe the shoe fits in this case.
