I am new to south eastern Id. where would be a good place hunt with a general season tag. Elk and Deer

Depends on what type of hunt you are looking for. Are you hunting for meat, or after a trophy? That will greatly determine where you want to hunt. South Eastern Idaho has lots of opportunity, and lots of hunters as well.

oneshotcoy,
Well, if you "don't have to shoot a big trophy, but it would be nice" does that mean you will take the first legal buck you see but hope that its a trophy?

There are many types of hunting is SE Idaho, from an easy "meat hunt" to hard core trophy. If you go to the easy area you better shoot the first legal buck you see. Hunting in the rougher area's where there are big bucks may discourage you from shooting a small one.

I would suggest that you review the regulations, get a good map and drive around this fine country we call SE Idaho and get an idea of the area then ask some more specific questions.

Many of the "spike only" elk area's offer a good experience (not as many hunters and lots of elk) and would be a good meat hunt. Some of the "2 pt only" deer area's offer the same thing.

There are deer and elk in every unit with tags available. Research the country, call the local fish and game, and keep coming to this site!

If I were you I would spend some time scouting this summer. I would also take some time to get familar with the regs and look over the harvest data that the F&G has on their website.
The only over the counter any weapon bull hunt in the SE region is the Bear River Zone. There are also some any weapon bull hunts in the Upper Snake and Salmon regions that you might want to look into. If you hunt with a bow you can just pick which Zone you want to buy an "A Tag". If you are just looking at putting some meat in the freezer it will be much easier to kill a cow than a bull. For cows you could put in for the second draw for one of the "X tags" and/or buy the Bear River A tag, Bannock A tag or one of the zones in the Upper Snake or Salmon Regions.
For deer you just have to choose between the general tag and the whitetail tag. You can kill both whitetails and mulies on the general tag. If your mostly interested in whitetails then the whitetail tag will give you the best opertunity. If you put in some time scouting and are a better than average muley hunter you will have a very good chance at getting a shot at a younger 4pt muley in any of the general season units in SE Idaho.
If you let us know what type of hunting experience you have and what kind of hunt your looking for we could give you more help.
If you every have any questions feel free to send me a PM. Just don't expect me to tell you my favorite spots ;)
