I will be hunting the early elk hunt in unit 51. Anyone know the status of the Mule deer herd in this unit. I'm thinking about buying a deer tag since it overlaps with the elk hunt.

yes, you should. There are deer in the unit, and if you don't buy the tag you know you will see a whopper. If you do buy the tag you may only see a forkie but...

I'm assuming you drew hunt 2029 which opens Oct. 1st and closes Oct. 14th. I would hope that you have your elk on the ground before deer season opens Oct. 10th.
IMO if you put the time in and your a better than average hunter you wouldn't have any trouble taking a younger 4 point. There are a few older bucks in this unit but if your holding out for a 30 incher then I wouldn't waste your money on the tag.
The best advice I that I could give you is wait until a couple days before the deer season opens to buy a deer tag. I would guess that there will be plenty of Nonresident deer tags still available in October. Here's a link to the quotas.

If you like what you see during the first few days of your elk hunt go buy a deer tag. If the quota is getting close to being filled in september then you will have to make your choice a little sooner.

Thanks BrianID,

I did draw 2029! Like you said, I will just make note of what deer I am seeing while hunting elk and decide from there. Sounds like you know the area. Any advice on where to start looking for a nice bull would be appreciated. I hope to make several scoutting trips this summer and fall before the hunt. I don't know what kind of pressure the elk get from the September Archery hunters, any idea?.

Thanks for any additional info.
