Wyoming Area 87

I was lucky enough to pull a tag for Area 87 deer and was looking forward to a hunt with my brother. He is unable to go so it appears that a solo trip from Missouri is in order. I have hunted pronghorn several times in Wyoming, but have never been in or around Rawlins. If anybody would like to provide some insight to the area or a general direction to concentrate my efforts, I'd be very appreciative. Since I'll be alone, I plan to hunt hard from sunrise to sunset. Thanks again.

Tucker,

I live in Rawlins and would be happy to help you. First, contact the local BLM Office here in Rawlins and order all the local maps. Much of area 87 is BLM land, but some is also "checkerboard" and you really need to know where you are or the ranchers will bust you. The local BLM Office can be reached at 307-328-4200. A good place to start your search for nice muleys is north of Seminoe Reservoir and the Ferris Mountain Area. This area is very rugged and holds some really nice deer. Not many roads so come prepared to do some hiking and pack one out on your back if you get one down. There is a game and fish habitat area between Seminoe and Pathfinder Reservoir, but I think that gets hit pretty hard. The Walk'In hunting areas have not come out yet for this year, but when the do, check out to see if their are any areas in this unit open. These are private lands the game and fish lease for public hunting opportunities an some can hold nice deer. There is not alot of water of the west side of this unit, so if you hunt that area, hunting around water holes would be a good idea, but the larger bucks are only going to visit at night. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Wyoming man,
if you don't mind me asking, who are you???? I lived in Rawlins for 25 years! Just moved to Jackson Hole a couple years ago. I put in for 86-87 again this year and drew out. As did I draw out last year as well. I am sure I know you as well I know you know me, This is Scott H.

Tucker,
Hunt long and hard, I would suggest being either up on the top of Ferris or on the top of the Seminoes. If the weather is warm the big ole' bucks like to hang out on top of the mountain. I have hunted this area many times, mostly for antelope but a couple years for deer and another time we drew elk tags up there. If you want some help give me a personal message and I will help you out, since I too will be hunting up there come the 15th of october and already know where my deer is I won't devulge any exact locations but I would be more than happy to shoot you in the right direction.

bigmuley,

My name is Chad D. I have lived in Rawlins for about 3 1/2 years, before that lived in Laramie.

wyomingman,

I guess I don't know you. At least that I can think of. I lived in Rawlins for 26 years, my parents, girlfriend, and many friends still live there. In fact I will be coming home this weekend to go on my buddies and mine annual camping trip. Look forward to be home in my old stomping grounds. What do you do in Rawlins, who do you work for?

Have you spent alot of time up on Ferris Mountain? I use to work for the BLM spring developement crew and spent countless hours around the base of Ferris both on the north and south sides of the mountain. Spent alot of time up in Blacks Canyons and on Cherry Creek, sometime on the Haystacks.
