I fortunately ( I think ) got drawn for New Mexico Unit 12 for mule deer. I do not no the area very well. Can anyone please let me know where to concentrate my time or at least let me know what caliber of bucks to expect, amount of bucks, terrain, weather, etc.

I am not real expert on unit 12, but I do know there is tons of private land with public land mixed in here and there. The first thing would be just to find a place where you can at least hunt.

I drew this too. There are not alot of deer at least in the South end where I scouted a week and a half ago. The South end of the unit is dry right now and the deer are hitting windmills. I plan to investigate the North end in a few weeks. Monsoon should start soon and fill up the tanks too so it will all change before the season starts. I have not run into any locked up gates yet but that might change come season time or in another part of the unit. There is a ton of BLM land around so finding places might not be too hard but finding public land with deer might be.

i hunted unit 12 the last two years for elk, we never did get a elk either year but should have the first year, but some cattle got in my way. any ways while we were down there we saw quite a few deer. this was around oct 1-5. however the quality of bucks was not that good from the ones we seen. we saw many fork horns and only one legal deer. if you do however catch these deer on the little amounts of public land you could be in for a good hunt. due to the small amounts a huntable land there is very high hunting pressure. if i were you i would go a couple of days early and start to ask landowners for permission to hunt on thier land. if that doesn't work then i would try to find a isolated water hole with good sign that is away from the other hunters and stick to that cuz the weather can be hot down there depending on when you are there.
