LAST EDITED ON Aug-12-05 AT 02:07PM (MST)[p]First, what a great forum and site!

I have been drawn for an Arizona early Nov. 20C any antler tag. I have put in three weekends of scoutning in and around Stanton and the Santa Maria River area. I have seen very little deer sign and have not seen one buck while glassing. I have been on my spots prior to sun up with not luck. These areas look "bucky."

Is it too early to be scouting, and where should I be looking?

This is my first deer tag and am very excited about taking a Desert Mule Deer, but am getting concerned about deer concentrations and my tactics.

Thoughts & Suggestions?

Thanks,
Neil

Have you gone out around Date Creek Road? I have seen a few nice bucks out there while archery hunting but it is a pain to get away from the private prop is some areas.

Good Luck

Down by the mines, Stanton/Octave there are fewer deer than other parts of the unit. The ones you see however will be pretty big. Are you looking for a trophy or just a representive buck? I have also seen some good bucks while out calling coyotes on the north side of Date Creek road.

I have done some quail hunting in and around the date creek area and am concerned that I will see a lot of bird hunters in the area during my hunt. I do like that area and am saving my scouting trips there to Oct; when I can do some scouting and birding the same day. I think it will be good, but the private property will be difficult and long hike probablyl mandatory. Other hunters probably will hit it hard as well. I am willing to put the miles in though.

Tinman, I would like a trophy and am willing to hunt 7 days for one, but will take a respectable buck the last portion of my hunt. I'm putting in a lot of scouting time for that trophy and will hold out as long as I can.

Don't overlook those BIG flat areas. Took my nephew on one of those Jr. hunts in there a few years back. Found a little hill that kind of stuck out, climbed it, and started glassing. Not many deer but this is where we found the biggest. He kinda got the "fever" but he definatley had a good chance at a nice mature buck. I still tease him about it too. If you just start walking around in those flats you will see what I'm talking about by all the tracks. BIG tracks.

Good Luck and happy hunting.

The big flats are they by stanton??? I never hunted there or have any tags but some friends that I know drew some.

By the "big flats" he's referring to the open flat desert portion of the unit before you get to the Weaver Mountains. There are very few deer there......but the ones that call this area home are good ones.
