I drew a late tag and am looking for any input from anyone who has hunted it during the late archery season (Nov12-Dec 4). I know a lot of guys who have hunted it early archery and during the gun seasons. I rifle hunted it 15 years ago and took a nice mid 180's deer but that was before the Muleycraze seemed to hit.
I moved to Alaska 10 years ago and now guide big game and fisherman up here and it makes it tough to keep up with everything in the lower 48. I'd be willing to help anyone out with info on Alaska. I'm looking for anything that I can get. Thanks

It depends on the weather. I have the same tag and I live in Spring Creek. I also have a bull elk tag for the Ely area that starts the same day, so I'll be doing most of my scouting down there, but email me a little closer to the hunt at [email protected] and I may be able to help. Good luck, maybe see you on the mountain.

How has the weather been? I am trying to decide when to leave. Most likely won't be unitl the 23rd of November, but someone has good things to say about the weather it could be earlier.

I still can't believe I get to chase Muleys in the rut with a Bow!!!!!!!!!!

I just got back from my elk hunt in Ely, Nev. it was a great hunt, short but great. The bucks are chasing the does around pretty good now. I'm going out in the morning to try and find a brute. Good luck on your hunt. Lows are going to be in the single digits tonight and there is a little snow in the mountains. It's going to be good.

Fatrooster is right- there are alot of deer in Harrison. I drew this tag also, and have been seeing about 80 deer a day. Unfortunately, seeing & sticking them are two different things! Anywhere you go in there, they have been mainly on the east side about halfway up. Good luck, as they are pretty sharp.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-22-05 AT 02:08AM (MST)[p]One of those bucks off the east side is hanging in my shed right now. My dad, brother and brother-in-law still have tags and we'll be back there Friday thru Sunday. Good luck.

I will have pics today. He's nothing to get excited about. I can't even believe I shot him with 10 days left to hunt! It was fun though and more meat for the freezer. I really want to concentrate on my dad getting one of the brutes on the mountain. I will post pics of the buck and my Nevada bull in the next day or so before we go back out.

Coming out from Colorado. Weather.com has snow in the forcast starting Saturday and early next week as well!!!!!!!! Just got off the phone with the Biologist again. He really knows the area, just name off creek drainages and he knows where your talking about.

If you want to send me a pm as to the direction your heading I'll tell you what I know. I've been hunting the Rubies and the East Humbolts for 18 years. I don't know everywhere, but I know some:]

Nevadaguy-
Have you seen the monster I keep hearing about on top of the mountain? A friend in Ruby valley tells me this guy is 32" with tons of mass, and about 500lbs on the hoof. I said hogwash, until now my husband claims to have seen it, and he doesn't tell stories about hunting (fishing is another matter). I am hoping he walks in front of me, although I will probably be a shaking puddle of drool and forget that I have a bow in my hand & tag in pocket. Just curious.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-26-05 AT 03:23AM (MST)[p]We where over yesterday and saw a few bucks, nothing really big.

The storm has hit-rain but it is 40 degrees here at home in Utah, at 3:21am so maybe a bit cooler over in Nv..

Be safe Joe and enjoy!

NVpackrat - I don't think I've seen the buck your talking about, but it sure sounds like a good one. I have a friend that was hunting that side of the range on his muzz. hunt and has some awesome bucks on video. The snow is piling up on the mountain so it will help out a ton. Good luck and let us know how you do.

NVpackrat, how is your hunt going? Have you seen that big monster? Anybody else having success? The suspense is killing me. I've heard so many good things about this late hunt. C'mon guys, fill us in. fatrooster.

Fatrooster-
At the risk of having more people put in for this tag, it is the best hunting I've ever had (including rifle). Every day there is an opportunity for a shot, and the Ndow guy was right when he said you pretty much jump from stalk to stalk. I haven't seen the monster, but talked to alot of hunters who have. I haven't talked to anyone who has been successful yet, and haven't seen any deer hanging in camps. Don't throw too many eggs, but I've missed 6 shots so far- I feel pretty great about even getting that many chances, as this is my first archery hunt. And at some great bucks! AND there's one more week to go!!! Those forkies are starting to look pretty good.

NVpackrat, I can't throw any eggs because I've never hunted archery but you guys have really got me contemplating it. What kind of quality deer have you shot at if I may ask? Has the snow helped the hunting? Is it harder to stalk a deer in the snow? fatrooster.

NEVADAGUY, congrats on your bull. I saw a picture of him at work. I know your brother and he told me about the good time ya'll had. I also saw his archery area 10 late tag deer hunt from last year that he has on video. Are you going to the big buck contest at the Watering Hole this year? fatrooster.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-29-05 AT 00:30AM (MST)[p]Killowatt, the Big Buck Contest will be held on December 10th at the Watering Hole in Spring Creek. We ate at the Scoreboard and the Watering Hole is across the street on the other side of the Chevron which is now a Sinclair gas station. If you can make it that would be great but thats a long way to go for a big buck contest. It is a good time though and I've heard that there are gonna be some big bruisers in it this year. Last year a woman took 1st place and another woman took 2nd place. It sounds like there is a woman who has taken her first deer ever and he's a doozy and she's in the contest. They have an archery, muzzleloader, youth and regular rifle categories and the prizes in the past and including this year will be a free muzzleloader rifle, a free rifle, a bow, and another rifle. There are also many door prizes given. But the rule is that you have to buy a ticket before the hunting season starts. Anyway, I hope you can make it. fatrooster.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot the most important part. Free Bar-B-Q.

Fresh snow is great for stalking on bucks or bulls with the bow. The day old snow that has frozen over night is the worse stuff there is to put a stalk on with it being all crunchy and ya break through with every step....NOISEY

Fatrooster,
The bucks we've shot at so far have been a tall 3 point (tips almost touch), a 4x5 w/stickers, a nice 4 point, and numerous little 3 points; nothing spectacular though. It depends on what you want to chase- some guys were only after record bucks. Me, I'll stick pretty much anything for a first archery deer. As far as the snow, it was dry until yesterday's hunt, and then it was like pleasedear said- soft & quiet. Today there's 6 inches at the house (we're by South Fork), so can't wait to see Harrison. Also wondering where those deer are going do now that they have a significant amount of snow.

fatrooster - yeah I'll be there, last year was a lot of fun and I'm sure it'll be a blast this year too. Hopefully Chris will have another kill shot on video to show you guys again this year. We're goig to put on the white suits ang get after it this weekend. The elk hunt was a short, but great time. Didn't you end up with an elk tag also? How did you do on the hunt? I'm sure I'll meet you at the contest.

fatrooster - I have tried to reply to your # 20 post twice and I'm not sure why it isn't posting so I guess I'll chat with you at the contest. See you then.
