A bucks ear spread is usually around 18-22". That is just a starting point as each deer will be different.

Zigga, I usually use a standard measurement of 24" from tip of ear to the other tip of ear on a mule deer when the ears are spread out. If he is sticking out 2" past his ears on each side then that would make him about a 28" deer on the outside spread. I personally deduct about an inch to avoid ground shrinkage making him about 27" wide on the outside spread. Depending on how thick his antlers are will help you decide how much to deduct for the inside spread. I'm guessing that it would be safe to deduct about 1" to 1.5" per side. That would give him about a 24" to 25" inside spread. I don't know if my way is the right way but thats how I do my calculating. I would rather guess him too small rather than too large. fatrooster.

1. Depends on how big your dog is.....and what type of batter you use
2. The average rope in the US is somewhat longer than a shoelace, but a bit shorter than I-15......hope that helps you next time.

Thanks for the info. I'm guessing the buck I saw is 27ish and I hope to lay him down for a dirt nap in the next couple days. Then we'll put a tape on him.

D13er is full of good information as well.....isn't she?

I have to agree with WesternSky 18-22", if it's a big bodied mature buck and the antlers are out to it's ears then figure it's a 22" rack with an inside spread spread of atleast 1-1/2 inches shorter--at best! If you're measuring for B&C or P&Y you have to take the inside spread of the main beam which can be(and usually is) a whole lot less than the G2's, G3's, and G4's.

Ask a silly question, get a silly answer.

If you had asked "outside spread", I wouldn't have considered it a silly question. The only inside spread that means anything to anybody is the inside spread of the main beams which could be nearly anything relative to the outside spread. I've measured bucks with outside spreads od 35" that barely make a 20" inside main beam spread. Your question has no answer or one answer for each deer.

How long is a chinaman??

FYI...we always measure the ears of those flop eared bucks we get on the Arizona Strip.

We have taped several that went 25" and two that went 26". Those are old, old bucks, but they grow long ears like us old guys grow hair in our noses and ears...

D,
A few answered the question perfectly. There's about a thousand muley pictures on this site with the buck looking at or away from the camera and my question was referring to the width of the ears. Not sure where the confusion came from silly. The thread is monster muley talk and I'm guessing that there is not a lot of difference in ear width on monster muley bucks. I believe inside spread is how B and C scores the trophies, not outside spread. The widest area within the rack.

loaded question!
I would ask if that buck drank out of a polluted creek that had petrol dumpED in it be some eco-terrorist trying to mess with some poor slob quad rider!(and yes I am back! had the sesser worm wiped me out! however I fixed the computer! ta da!)

Sorry d13er guess I'm being a bit immature, but I couldn't resist your stupid question.
