WHY NOT COUNT BROWTINES?

I don't understand why so many people insist on not counting the browtines on mule deer as points. I noticed Muley Crazy magazine does not count them.
I learned everything at least 1" is considered a point. The Boone and Crockett measuring system labels a mule deer's browtines as the G1 point, giving it just as much credit as the other points on a rack.
I wanted to see what people thought about this.

I count my browtines. I mean if Boone and Crockett counts it why shouldn't we???

LAST EDITED ON Sep-10-05 AT 03:13PM (MST)[p]Good question! Seems strange to me too. It's like not counting the eye gaurds on an elk just because they are called "eyegaurds". A point is a point and a buck with good browtines sure adds to a bucks total score. The difference between a buck with 26" spread and a 32" spread sure is noticable on the hoof. But if the 26" spread buck had browtines that were 3" each, he would score the same as the 32" buck with no browtines. Funny how those little points can add so much.

Just my 2 cents

I'm in agreement with everyone else on this. 1" or longer, and they count, 'nuff said. Perhaps someone could try and explain the thinking behind not counting them, I'd be interested to hear their reasoning. Scott/couesbitten

It's just tradition. Why do easterners call a 5x4 a nine pointer and we don't??

I think the main reason is because its about a 50/50 split with mule deer having browtines or not. Where as with whitetails you pretty much always have them, thats why we say "I shot a 4 point today" or "I shot a 4 point with eyegaurds today". If muleys always had eyegaurds we just say "I shot a 5 point today" Get it? Good.

WELL

WHEN YOU LIVE WHERE YOU HUNT WHITETAILS YOU HAVE TO COUNT ALL POINTS,MULTIPLY & ADD BROWTINES!!!

AND THEM COUESBITTEN DEER,(DINKY DOG DEER) YOU COUNT EVERY DAMN POINT 1/8" OR LONGER!!!

IF THE WESTERNERS COUNTED BROWTINES WE'D HAVE TO CALL A FOUR POINT A FIVE POINT,NOT!!!

THE ONLY bobcat HOPEING THE NOMAD BUCK HAS BROWTINES!!!

This debate always makes me chuckle...........

I've always said that if all of the guys here that are so entrenched in the tradition of not counting them killed a 4x4 typical with eyegaurds that scored 225 not measuring them or 227 measureing them I bet we'd see a convert.

I think we all know that we count them when scoring for B&C or P&Y, the question why not in casual conversation, if youll read my other post, youll find a very good answer, thank you very much....

I count them because they are a scorable point. I had a argument one time with a friend about that. We were in a four point or better area for muleys and he spotted a buck that had four on one side and three on the other, not including the eye guards. I told him to bust it and he didn't. I said it's a five by four and he said legally the game and fish wouldn't count it. We argued about it some more and he didn't kill it. Later on he did some "official" checking and found out he could count the eye guards as a point. I didn't gloat about it but just let him sit and stew.

Its obviously personal, and I go with the traditional thing. One reason behind it is that alot of mulies don't have browtines. There is a big difference between a four point (three with guards) and a FOUR point. or 5 point etc. If its totally nontypical, I don't see that it matters much. Again, personal preference.

I always thought it was because westerners didn't want to have to take their boots off to score a deer<lol>

What I meant was that the California Dept Of Fish and Game will not allow you to count eye guards. ie a forked horn with eye guards is not a legal buck in a three point or better zone. Not my opinion just the facts.

It's just one of those things that we don't count here in my neck of the woods. Kind of like a 4x4 pickup. Hell, we don't count the spare tire in the back! A 4x5 pickup just sounds funny doesn't it? So does calling a typical four by four, a five by five because it has eyeguards.

Its because westerners are so dam conservative:

Yup, I shot a four point (Westerner)

Well, its been a tough hunt. I have been in this box blind in my lazy boy for nearly 2 days now watching my biologic food plot and its sure paid off with this big 10 point (Easterner)

LOL

Our group of hunters do not count eyeguards for the following reasons. They of course are counted in the scoring. The reason we don't call a 3x3 with eyeguards, a 4x4 is because of descriptive purposes. When you tell a buddy about a big 4 point with double eye guards on one side, he has an idea of what the buck looks like. If you were to tell him about a 11 point buck you just saw, he would reply with "I didn't know you hunt whitetails?", he also wouldn't know the general appearance of the 11 pointer. When we say a 4 point or 3 point, we assume it to be a 4x4 or 3x3. Otherwise we may say a 5x4 with no eyeguards, just to be very specific since many of us scout hard and recognize individual bucks. It's not that browtines aren't counted, just not confused for what they are not. Just my $.02
