Mule deer management

You hear a lot about whitetail deer management and how you should shoot the "management" type deer to improve genetics of your deer herd. do you guys think this is also true for muleys and if so what would you classify a management mule deer?

a management mule deer? 2 points that are over 20" wide, and 4 year old bucks with short points. I've hunted on private land where the landowner asks everyone to shoot 4 point or better only. So after 10 years or so all you see on his ranch is 20-30 inch 2 points.

There are some 30 inch or better three points runnin around. Take them out.

Yes they do. They remove older age class bucks that have 8(eastern count) or fewer points. But it is only part of the overal mgt. program and probably the least part. As far as improving genetics sort of ?? if it will show up in your hunting life time(those bucks do breed does and pass on there genes and does are also responsible for a portion of the genetics that determine antler size). What it does do is make room for younger bucks with more potential and for older bucks that have not quite reached their potential. Another important part is removing does (lots) to maintain a high buck doe ratio (50-100 bucks/100does. Additionally they have complete control of hunter numbers and # of big(trophy) bucks that are removed each year. Something you don't have on public land with mule deer. They also provide supplemetal feed and plant food plots to improve the nutritional plane of deer. This, along with letting them grow old and maintaining herd at carrying capacity is the key to growing "big" bucks.

wyoming here has some what of a mangment plan already. up in the mountains it is 4 points or better on one side. it has been like this for a few years or more and we are getting some monsters up here. but we have no whitetail plan and that is what i want. we have lots of little guys running around. i think they should put point system on our whitetails here.

If you don't control # of hunters point rerestrictions, as a long term management method, selects for small antler size. In WY it is used as a short term harvest strategy (2-4 years) to increase the age class of bucks or improve buck/doe ratios or both.

I have been seeing a buck that is about 26-28in wide and has nice rear forks but does not have any g4 points. so he is a nice 3x3...if this deer is young will he ever grow those front points or does he not have the genetics to? thanks

I did my part and took out one of those three pointers for you.

If a buck is a 3X4 will he ever become a 4X4.

How old was this deer? It he was a 2 year old, it's incredible genetics.....if he was 5, not so good......age relation to antler size is the best way to determine how much he will contribute.
