Since my Wyoming hunt was a bust, I need to focus on my Central Utah deer tag. Has anybody hunted or is currently hunting the Provo Peak area? I went up there the other day, hiked to the top, and didn't see any deer, of course the area was filled with other hikers, bike riders, scouts, people on 4-wheelers, BYU students parked and making out, all sorts of people.

I figure once the weather changes less people will frequent the area. It's some steep country and looks awesome.

Any help or advice?

Just a quick word of advice. Quit using your spotting scope to watch the students that are making out below you and try to focus on the task at hand. :)

Seriously, like you I haven't seen squat up there this year. I think maybe all the pressure has moved them out but I agree it sure is great looking country. I know I haven't been much help but good luck to you anyway. I think we're going to need it pretty much everywhere we go in Central UT this year.

If you've seen most of those zoobie girls, you wouldn't want to watch them. It's like a Sea World exibit.

NvrEnuf--have you also scouted Cascade or Wind Ridge? It's a little more inaccesible, but I'm still not sure how many rifle hunters venture in there.

BEV42, I also haven't seen much up there this summer. But there have been and always are tons of hikers. Yes the colder weather lowers the number of hikers but provo peak has hikers mostly BYU students all year long. Even a few die hards hike up and ski back down in the winter. It is rare to not see someone hiking that peak. I have a buddy that hunted it last year on the rifle opener, and even with all the snow, he said the mountain was covered with people. Most of them stayed fairly low. My buddy sat high hoping that the lower hunters would push the deer up, he only saw two deer, both bucks, a forky and a 16 inch 3 point which he brought home with him. Cascade is not quite as popular but still gets people hiking it almost all fall, they hit it from both the back and front. Got to love all the BYU kids out hiking.

If I was a betting man I would set my sights on the lower benches down by BYU campus. There are alot of deer that come down there because there are to many people on the mountain. I would also hunt my butt off because I wouldnt want to be outdone by my buddy after all the smack talk I had given him. Especially if he has seen a pretty nice one. Yeah focus on the lower elevations and shoot the first thing you see, because with this year it might be the only thing you see.
Hope that helps.

The back of Cascade Peak is rugged country but holds bucks. People do well there but you will hike your rear off for it. Get high(almost on top) and watch those big basins early in the morning. Look close to the area that drains into Bridal Veil Falls.
