Archery alkali?

My cousin and I drew the archery alkali late mule deer tags this year. We've already signed up at the mp bldng. The hunt is from Dec 11-25. We'll be doing plenty of scouting prior to the hunt. I'm just curious if anyone has hunted deer in there in Dec? What should we expect during that time frame? Looking at last years harvest report. Not too many guys went in there during the hunt.

A buddy from work was talking to a bioligist from that area and he told him that he believes that unit could kick out a new state record. Hope it's me.

I live 5 miles from the alkali, it seems every year they kill a couple dandys in there, 28-30 inchers during rifle season but it seems the average buck is 18-20 inches. That area is tough hunting with a bow. really open country. Theres alot of deer out there though. Ive never been out there in december so cant tell you what to expect. Hopefully there wont be alot of snow so that you cant get around. Couple inches would be perfect for spotting. My brother in law had a rifle tag 2 years ago and passed on a couple decent bucks hoping for the big one. he ate his tag.

I just moved up to AK this summer, but before that I grew up in the Yak valley. I have seen and heard of some dandy bucks shot out of the firing center but all with a rifle or muzzleloader. The deer just get pounded before the bowhunters get a crack at them. I got drawn for your permit last year and it was tough to say the least. The fog was terrible. We got to hunt only two days that it wasn't foggy. The rest of our trips were fogged in. We did see a couple of nice bucks. THe selah creek canyon just off the highway has some decent bucks. If you can get someone in the military to go with you, you can access an area that the general public can't. That is were the big boys were hanging out last year. They were also in the closed areas. This hunt used to be an early hunt and that is when the archers nailed the deer. It is hard enough to get on those deer in the sage let alone after they are pounded for weeks by rifle and muzzleloader hunters. If I were to hunt that area again I would hunt squaw creek (Lluma creek) and over towards the columbia. There are also some big buck taken on the Moxee side. That side can be hit or miss. Alot of the bucks on the Moxee side come off the private land. If you have any more questions send me an email. [email protected] I hope this helps
