Well I did it!! My house is on the market and I'm pulling my carpenters pension and heading north. Am getting away from Calif. for the first time and am looking forward to it!!
Are choice of location is Moscow Idaho, it is so nice up there, people are great and the country is something. Now the question. How is the hunting in area 8 or 8A. Whitetail deer? Are there mule deer in the area?
Any help? Thanks Gary

I spent 5 years in Moscow going to school. What a great spot, although I miss the sagebrush if I'm gone from southern Idaho for too long.

The whitetail hunting in that area is fantastic. There are mule deer around, especially if you go south...the snake and salmon river breaks hold some tremendous muley bucks. East of Moscow you will also find muleys but I never saw any good bucks. 8 and 8a have great whitey's and if you can't get permission on private ground there is great hunting on both public land and potlatch company (timber co.) land.

Good pheasant hunting also. Look around Grangeville (south of Moscow)its a neat place with whiteys, muleys, turkeys, elk and salmon/steelhead fishing.

Don't miss out on the B-run steelhead in the Clearwater!

Have fun its a great place.
Oh, and GO VANDALS!!

Good luck on your move to get out of this state of high living, hope that you like the move.
An old school friend has been up there just north of Moscow in a small town called Princeton since the very early 60's after finishing H.S. here.
He is retired now and still loves it up there, been by to see him twice before but always at night or close to dark to really see what the area looks like.

Idaho is a great place to live. I have friends that moved from here (northern Calif) to Laclede, Idaho near Sandpoint. Hunting, Fishing, all kinds of sports. Nice people up there!

Thank you for the quick responses. I can't wait to get up there I know whitetail hunting last all the way in to Dec. Not sure about mule deer. My real estate agents husband is a avid hunter and has pictures posted of elk, moose and deer taken right in the Moscow area. One house I'm looking at boarders USFS land so thats cool.
Thank you again Gary

Carp,

Damn I'm jealous. Best of luck to you in the move and good for you for doing it.
My cousin went to school up there and really liked it. I know he hunted muleys nearby, but the guys above can obviously give you better detailed info.

Just review the regs....muley season generally closes earlier than white-tail and now there is a "general tag" and a "whitetail only" tag. Just make sure you understand the difference and the implications (I'm not sure I do but I am a south Idaho muley hunter so its "general tag" for me).

The "quality" muley hunting in N. Idaho is primarily controlled hunts only...the snake and salmon river breaks deer hunts are where its at but tough drawing odds. The whitetail is king up north. As you get to Riggins and south it becomes better muley country with general hunts.

Have fun

I spent five years as a Vandal at the University of Idaho. I sure enjoyed the time I spent there. There are some big high country muleys in Bonner county up by Canada. But don't forget the whitetails and elk from Helmer to Bovill and around Troy and Deary. The people are very genuine, but be sure to get your plates changed to Idaho as quick as you can. There have been plenty of Kalifornians that have pissed off the locals in the past.
Places to check out of local interest:
Be sure to stop by the Slurp 'n' Burp for a Beer and a Burger.

Until you get some venison in the freezer, buy meat at the U of Idaho meat lab. The hot dogs are the best around!

If you need outdoor gear, Tri-State is the best place around.

If you don't have a freezer, reserve your locker at C&L Meats as soon as possible. They fill up fast in the fall.

I'm not sure where they are hiding them, but the Jack O'Connor Wildlife taxidermy collection is either at the College of FWR, or in the Biology building. One of the secretaries in the Wildlife Department should have some idea.

Best of luck in the Palouse. If I make it up some year for Homecoming I may bring my rifle to see how you dids on Scouting! Go Vandals!!!

If you are looking for mule deer in the moscow area you will have to find the highest mountians and ridges you can. They are around but the white tails will keep you busy enough. make sure you buy the right tag. Look to the north around Potlach and Plummer. Make friends with some wheat farmers, just get your plates changed quickly. As earlier suggested.
