Not the biggest deer I have taken by a long shot, but the biggest and toughest I have taken in California. The fist picture is of myself and my son with a 4X3 taken this week. He was double lunged at 270 yards and still managed to run over 300+ yards. When I shot him he Disappeared into the buck brush and I thought he was gone. It was pouring rain and I knew he was hit good but the rain was washing away the blood. I finally found a little blood and his tracks. After about 45 min of tracking we found him down about 300 yards away.

This is my friends 3X3 taken the next day. It is the first buck he has taken. Again not the biggest buck but not bad for a first deer. My son got skunked this trip but he has already taken a Elk last year in Colorado when he was 12 so I dont feel too bad for him. I still have a bear tag so I will get him out in the woods this weekend or next to see if we can get him his first Buck

LAST EDITED ON Oct-06-05 AT 10:49PM (MST)[p]Nice Forkey! Yea we had a good time. Ive been hunting in the same place since I was 8 years old carrying a BB gun with my Dad and Grandfather. My Dad hunted in the same spot since he was 16. We went there every year when it was a three point or better zone. Then when it went to a draw we got drawn about every two years. We have camped in the exact same spot with his original fire pit for all those years. The funny thing is that my dad never tagged a buck there but everyone that he took there did. He always got his buck out of state but never up there. I also never got a buck there but always got my buck out of state. Mainly Colorado because we have cousins with a ranch near Craig, and one near Montrose. Besides Colorado we hunted all the western states.
Three years ago my dad couldnt go on the X-1 hunt because he had cancer. So I went and got my first X-1 buck. It was a little fork by spike and the spike side curls around like a ram. He passed away shortly after that hunt and he is buried with his tag for X-1 that he never got to use. This year was the first year that I got drawn since my son was old enough to hunt with a rifle. I thought it was ironic to get a deer the first time there with my son. So even though it is no monster it is being mounted to go on the wall.

Little better pic of the heads

Brian,
Congrats to you on the hunt and the "little ones" catching the trout up there too. Nice campsite and pictures as well, thanks for posting.

The buck on the left looks to be a muley-blacktail cross. Is it? I Went with a couple of buddies who had tags in '01 to hunt X7A and they got a 23" 4x3 that had the tail of a blacktail and the ears and antlers of a muley and the other was a forky that we were pretty sure was just a regular old muley.

nice bucks , great story, sorry to hear about your dad , is neat you've hunted up there that long ,,,, we have to on and off since was 3 pt or better ,,,, used to see lots more deer then ,,, anyway is hard to beat a trip like that ,,, :)
