My '05 WA "Deer" hunt! (with pics)

First off, I had an AWESOME time!!!!
Friday evening took a drive to scout the area a wee bit before opening morning. Didn't see any deer, but I ended up spotting 4 bull elk. All were branch antlered, and the last two were both 300" class bulls (6 points) and they were fighting! Let me tell you it was AWESOME sitting on this hillside watching these two HUGE bull elk battling it out on this hillside 200 yards away.

Opening morning came and we were on our ridge right as shooting light arrived. Not 10 minutes after shooting light, we hear what sounds like somebody running a construction tractor a ways away. "WTH??" then all the sudden two four wheelers pop out of nowhere below us on a primitive road scaring everything to hell and back. We could even hear them yelling to eachother off their QUADS!!!!! Oh man, that pissed me off somethin fierce!!

A cow elk got spooked out and they never even had a clue she was there. They leave, we resume hunting...

About 7:30 comes around, and I'm sitting on one side of a ridge, my Father on the other. He comes over, and skylines himself then sits down next to me. Not two minutes later I see a big bear running across the canyon about 250 yards away.
"Dad, there's a bear!!"
I ran down to the barbwire fence on got a rest on the crossbrace of the fence. At that time the bear had run into a timber "finger" thicket. I waited for him to emerge from the other side (I knew this was a pretty good sized bear, and I just wanted to fill a tag this year as we've had tag soup the last 3 years). Out he came at a fast walk.

I took aim right above the shoulder and let 'er FLY!
When I shot the bear, he was about halfway up the hill and then proceeded to roll right down into a brush thicket near the bottom. He never let out a yell or anything.
We worked our way along the fence line to get even with where we last saw him, then I see him limping down through the brush towards the bottom of a pine at the bottom. 'BOOM', no reaction from the bear, 'BOOM' right as he disappeared under the pine.
"Great, now we have a wounded bear right in the middle of a thick brush thicket, and we have to go find him."

So, we wait a 1/2 hour, then work our way down to where we think he is. After searching for a good hour, we finally found him only 50 yards away piled up under a log.

My first two shots hit him right behind the shoulder and were both fatal. My last shot right as he dissapeared under the pine hit him in the rear leg.

This is my first bear and his skull green scored at 18 7/8". Enough to make WA state book if he doesn't shrink below 18 1/2".

Here are the pictures. We struck out on deer but ended up seeing quite a few on Sunday, just no legal bucks. had a GREAT time, and am really excited to get my rug in 6 months!!

Where my first shot came from, the crossbrace seen here.

A better view of where I shot from. I'm standing where I first hit him, and if you look close, you can see the crossbrace of the fence on the far ridge.

Thanks guys! I'm going to try to head up the entiat some this week to go for some evening hunts. Hopefully this week I can fill my deer tag.

My dad and I also drew cow elk tags for October 29-November 6 for this unit (154).

Anybody want to guess how much he weights? We estimated conservitively at 350-375 lbs.

Man, when you said that, I went back up and looked at the picture of us. LMAO, we're posed exactly the same. I do however like to think I'm a little better looking than my Dad!
hehe I don't know if I should take that as a compliment or an insult! lol

Michael.....good job dude! That's a great bear! Guys have hunted for many years without ever shooting a bear.....you'll have plenty of oppurtunities for your deer. Good job Bud!

Nice Bear and great photos. Is that SE part of the state? Good luck in the Entiat. Let us know how the deer hunt goes.

Nice work on that bear, i like the color!!! Thats to bad about not seeing a legal buck but oh well its hunting!!! Great bear and do you know if your going to get that bad boy mounted? and if so let me know if you need any names on taxidermist. The entiat was packed but not to much killed, saturday it was 76 degrees. a little warm.

Garrett

thats a real nice bear. you and your dad should be proud. i bet you were puckered walking through that brush looking for him. LOL

Hey Michael That is a great bear and a great hunt. CONGRATS!!!
about the weight, its a very dangerous thing to guess on because almost everyone tacks on about double what a bear really weighs, and people take it as a huge insult if you say oh thats a 250 bear. What most people don't have a clue on is that a 300 pound bear is an absolute monster in Washington(take it from a guy who has killed a bunch of them and have been on many bear kills), and most 400 pound bears dumped in Washington really weigh about 200 or under. That being said, thats a great bear and will make a very nice rug for you. CONGRATS again and good luck on your deer hunt!
Doug

Thanks guys! I understand it's a little difficult to guess weight, being there's many factors on a bear. All I know is that it took 3 of us to roll him over and drag him to that ledge for pictures. I'm pretty sure he's bigger, but he was a solid 350 lbs.

Yeah, it was VERY exciting working(crawling on hands and knees)through the brush looking for him!

Yeah, I'm getting a rug mount of him done from Mike Casper down in Walla Walla. Talked to 5 or 6 different guys, and all have mounts done by him. He's quite good, but pretty spendy as well. It's okay, it'll be worth it (don't worry, I'm paying for it all by myself)!

IS THAT AN EAR TAG IN HIS EAR???

I PICTURED YOU YOUNG,BUT NOT THAT YOUNG!!!

NOW GO OUT & PRETEND YOU'RE HUNTING BEAR & YOU'LL FIND A DEAR,I MEAN A DEER,YOU'RE TO YOUNG FOR DEAR!!!

GET EM WHILE YOU CAN!!!

GOOD LUCK ON THE DEER HUNT!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING YOU OUGHT TO GET A LOAN FROM DAD FOR THE TAXI WORK,LOL!!!

Nope, that's just where I put my "tag" on him. That and lots of electrical tape! lol

I don't need a loan. I managed my school's Cherry orchard this last spring/summer/fall and got 75% of the Net profits. Cleared $7K after taxes. Over half is going into savings so don't worry!

Michael,
WOW!!! Congrats there bud! That is a super bear! I could only wish my first bear were that big. Believe I was 15 and the bear was just shy of 5 feet. My dad got a rug mount done on it. I still have it, although it's up in the attic. The first year I was married I brought home a hound pup for my wife. That dang dog loved to chew. Chewed the face right off that bear. LOL! So, piece of advice, hang the rug on the wall instead of the floor. :)

BC, thanks bud! He's deffinately going on the wall, but is going to my Sister's house cause they have an AWESOME house for mounts. It's only 3 miles away, and I hang out a lot up there so it'll be fun to go up and remember the hunt!

MichaelJ, congratulations on a beautiful bear and a great hunt. I've been looking for a coloured black bear this year, but no luck so far. Maybe next spring. Gotta say that I really enjoy your posts - keep up the good work. It's nice to see a young guy who loves to hunt as much as you seem to. Good luck the rest of the season.

BcMulie, thanks for the post. Haven't seen you post much, but do appreciate the comment. Thanks.

CONGRATULATIONS, MICHAEL!!!!

That's a heck of a nice bear, nice shootin!! Purty country you've got back there, too. Gotta come up and see you sometime in the next few years. That's gunna make a heck of a nice rug! Keep up the hard work and great attitude that you have...it's people like you that will keep our hunting tradition alive and well, that's a fact!

Man, I just realized it sure is GREAT to post something of my own and have all my FRIENDS on MM.com say this stuff.

Thanks guys...

Free, you deffinately got to come up some time! I just got to get a boat, then we could go for some salmon fishing this next summer! lol

you made 7K! Can I have a loan? I killed a nice bear here in Utah this year and I promise I would put the money towards my bear rug. LOL

Yeah, I got lucky. Should still get two more harvest's out of it as well. It's a full time job though. I got to drop EVERYTHING when something needs done there.
I worked since last May on this orchard, and didn't recieve a single cent until the begginning of this month. It was a long wait, but deffinately worth it.

Now I'm ready to do some serious hunting this weekend for deer!

Michael~All Gods creatures welcome... right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.

Congratulations on the bear and thanks for sharing the pics and story. Hope you find a nice buck this weekend.

Well, I didn't shoot a buck, but we got some elk! Check this link out: http://www.monstermuleys.info/dcforum/DCForumID7/5534.html

Kind of scary how I start out stories the same way....Just realized that.

Now all I have to do is convince my dad that we need to hunt that late whitetail season and I'll have a trifecta!!!
