Genetics on Mt. Timpanogos

I've hunted Timp and the surrounding areas for the many years and have yet to see a buck with all four of the qualities I am looking for: height, width, mass and deep forks. Timp bucks seem to have good width genetics but are spotty after that...especially with the mass characteristic and good forks. I've heard of several good bucks taken on Timp in the past decade but never got to see them to judge for myself. I'm interested in hearing the opinion of others who have hunted there.

Also, does anyone know how much pressure it received during the rifle hunt last year (heavy snow) in comparison to previous years. Any help would be appreciated.

obviosly the genetics that you are looking for are the makings of a great buck. I think that the answer is that they are there but few and far between

I have never hunted there before so I really can't say much to the genitic characteristics of this popuation. However, here a a few more things to consider.

At what age and under what conditions are a animal's (in this case buck deer) full genitic potential expressed? Further ask yourself what genitic makeup does 2/3--3/4's of the population espress (in this case the females)?

Unless you have had many deer migrate out of the Timp area and many new deer from other genitically different areas migrate into the area you have the same genes that you have always had and always will. If they are crappy the only way to get new genes is to nuke em and transplant new ones.

Hunted Timp several days last year, saw good numbers of deer each trip, but never the big one I was looking for. It is hunted hard every year. Lots of good hiding spots in that thick brush!!

Are you hunting the low hills or the ledges? I've grown up huntin/hikin the ledges and high cirques and im here too tell you there are monsters up there...but you have too work your arss off to find the smart old bastards... I have taken a few nice bucks up there, on thing about that mountain is you dont take the little guys or you'll hate yourself on the way down... my bro took a 5x5 202 gross buck two years ago, I got a 28in 4X5 last year in the same draw last year... had muzzy tag this year, saw a lot of deer just nothin worth pullin off that bugger this year,...... My wife tells me that i have a love hate relationship with that mountain, I love it sooooo much but my body hates it.......oh but its beautiful up there in the clouds aint it. ~G4

I've hunted Timp quit a bit... I agree with the comment, "I love that mountain, but my body hates it" I've had some good success, I took a 26' 3x3 up there, but I had to work my butt of to get to him. I've seen monsters up there, I know they are there because after shooting my 3x3, I saw 7 bucks that were ALOT bigger than the one that was laying at my feet. They are up there, but it's hell to find'em.

I will let you know that last year with the snow lots of guys got deer, but it was one hellacious trip. There were lots of people on quads a few brave souls in trucks... It's always hunted hard up there, but if you have the time and are willing to put the effort into it you can find a big one.

BTW... NO MORE QUADS ON TIMP!!! BE VERY CAREFUL FISH COPS WRITING TICKETS LEFT AND WRITE UP THERE!!!
