We located this buck and another great buck (32" 5x5 with 5-6" between G2 and 3 on both sides) before the opener. We made sure we could find him several times over two days before leaving the area to scout other areas in case a back up plan was needed. We found quite a few bucks including one other very good typical four point but I was set on trying for the trashy nontypical.
Five minutes after light opening morning my buddy spotted him bedded less than 60 yds. from where we left him last. He was well over five hundred yards so he stayed behind the big glass while I stalked in to 130 yds. I had gone as far as I could without spooking him and had run out of cover with only antler tips in view. Since he was bedded on an exposed hillside I figured he would move when the sun hit him and just as it did the coyotes started up fairly close. He was up quick and moved straight away behind the only cedar between us. His gait stiffened and his ears came up like he had winded me and he disappeared into a small draw to my right. I eased over to the edge and scanned the trees but could not locate him. When I checked the wind it was terrible and I decided to back out before he left the area and come back later when conditions were better. Just as I was turning to leave I caught movement below me and could see a deer feeding it's way in my direction in waist high grass. I waited for it to clear the trees and when he raised his head to chew there was no mistaking the cheaters. My bipod was already extended but there was a small tree in front of me preventing its use. Since he was nearly in bow range now I just shot him offhand at around 80 yds. At the shot he reared up on his back legs, stood for a second, and flipped over backwards.
My buddy jokes that I shot too soon for a tag that took so long to draw, so we stayed an additional three days to try to relocate the other deer with no luck. No regrets even if we had.
Thanks jtnm for the great set of extra eyes.

IMHO, you'd have to be nuts to pass up a deer like that whether it's the first five minutes of the hunt or the last...congrats!

That is a dang nice buck. How many points did it take for you to draw. I have six points and have been planning on putting in for the cliffs. Would you recommend it? I have heard from a couple of other guys that number of mature bucks was way down this year.

Any information would be much appreciated!

Nice Buck!

It took me 6 points to draw as a nonresident. I would definitely recommend the hunt for anyone wanting a GOOD chance at a mature deer. The points it takes compared to the wait for the other limited entry hunts is a no brainer. We scouted one month before the hunt and DURING the archery hunt for a day and a half and saw 93 bucks. 12 were over 170 and two in the 185-190 range. We never saw a single hunter in the area we hunted - not even a vehicle passed through. Later, after I had tagged out, when we checked out other areas we found a road hunting zoo. I got some good info from a guy who had hunted a year prior. With that advice I was able to avoid the masses and hunt totally undisturbed animals.

Congrats on a very respectable buck. That is a monster and will look very good on your wall. Sounds like a fun hunt.

My guess is, the number of points it's gonna take to draw the Book Cliff's is gonna go up after the success guys had out there this year and the exposure the unit has gotten. In other words, you're odds of drawing are gonna be worse from here on out....
