Idaho 66A late hunt

Hey guys, I am considering buying an elk landowner permit for 66A/76 for this fall. I don't know much about this hunt or this area even though I live relatively close to it. Is this a good hunt for numbers & size? Does it get pounded with hunters? I know it won't be a premium type hunt but I am hoping I would have a good chance at a 310-330 class bull. IS this doable in this unit? Any info would be greately appreciated!

Does it get pounded? Over 1000 resident archery tags, over 700 NR archery tags.

I have no experience on rifle. But archery is a joke. There are lots of elk though, I wouldn't let a 310 bull walk with that hunt. 330 would be very good although I'm sure there are bigger.

The people that I know that have hunted the rifle season said it was difficult but they both were successful on small six points.

Spartacus, I have heard the archery hunt is a joke but im hoping the late season hunts are better. I think there are only 50 tags for the first rifle and around 300 for the late season. Hopefully with the size of the unit, that won't be too crowded. I'm just hoping there are still some bigger bulls on the unit to chase. Thanks for the reply.

it wouldn't be to crowded with the 300 elk hunters, but the deer hunt is also going on. you will have plenty of company.

What about private ground? The tag comes with the option to hunt on private ground as well as public. Does that change the situation much?

depends on the private ground, some land owners get tags and own nothing but wasteland in the greys lake swamp.

The late tag also has the cow hunt going on at the same time. It is BUSY that opening weekend. I had the late tag about 4 years ago. Saw a ton of elk in there during the three weeks I hunted it. I stumbled on a major migration route, with early snow that year I watched a ton of different elk pass through the area. I wouldn't let any sixer walk. If you do end up buying the tag, shoot me an email.

Ok, so if I do decide to buy the tag, what do you think this tag would be worth? What would be resonable?

My uncle has a Big ranch on the unit. Have hunted both archery and rifle many years. Hunted private and public. Could shoot a 350 plus bull. Realistic a 280 to 320 type bull. That is hunting hard. I know a lot of people who would pay 3k for a tag. It just depends how much money you have, how much you want to hunt elk, and how many tags you have in your pocket. For me I wouldn't pay more than 1k for the tag. But I have other hunts and not a lot of money. If you look at the going rate for comparable hunts 3k is reasonable. Good luck. If you need some areas to hunt PM me. Greg

Thanks Greg, I guess as long as there are good numbers of elk in the unit with sixers I think it would be worth it.

this unit is one of the most hunted, by the time the cow hunt starts the elk are skitish, once you send out 1000 hunters for cows the hunting gets harder. My brother had this tag last year ended up with tag soup.

So are the cow hunts before the late rifle? Sounds like this hunt is more like a general season hunt than a true controlled or limited hunt.

When I hunted it the cow hunt ran simultaneously. Same opening day. I was suprised at the number of guys in the field. The fish cops even had a check station in Soda that weekend. The only time I ever seen a check station is opening day of Utah general deer hunt, if that tells you anything.

Yikes! I think im talking myself out of this one. Anyone know of any good tags in the west for elk with good numbers and size? I'm not looking for monster bulls but maybe 310-350 ish type stuff. I am willing to pay 2-3K but that's about all I can do. Any ideas?
