LAST EDITED ON Nov-14-05 AT 03:53PM (MST)[p]Let's see what 2005 produced. Post a PIC and tell us a little about your hunt.

My hunt was in Colorado. 2nd season rifle. It was hard hunting in 75 degree weather. After Oct 28th's cold front(rain), the bucks started rutting, and boy-oh-boy did the hunting start getting good, real good. Mine measures 27" wide, and a 4x5 frame, plus eye guards.

My 2005 buck...took yesterday 11-13-05 in Idaho. Shot with a .54 caliber muzzlerload at 110 yards. Boy oh boy are the bucks rutting hard. This is my buddy with him, he is a 4x4 25 wide, ruff scored him at 190 4/8.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-14-05 AT 05:44PM (MST)[p]Here's my '05 Utah muley. Taken the second day of the hunt in the Central Region. I was shooting a 1957 Winchester Model 70 .300H&H stuffed with 180gr Silvertips. Shot was roughly 30 yards with the deer on a dead @$$ run. He's 23" wide. Typical 4x4, but with only one eye-guard.

Oct 22, opening day. 11:30 am. On my way back to the road where my brother will pick me up after my 4 hr "slow hunt" through Quakies, pines, and sage. 10 min from the road, caught two buckstrying to sneak from feeding in the quakes to move over the ridge and down into the pine bedding area. The first buck was about 24" wide, short and crabby. Glad he was there though, he was a nice benchmark to judge this guy against, this one looked lots bigger, even though he was stone still, and I could only see on fork through the trees. The first buck stared me down for a few minutes, while this guy looked at the first buck the whole time. Meanwhile, I am offhand in the middle of a sage clearing, nothing to rest on, the sage is too tall to kneel. Arms starting to get a little tired waiting for him to take one more step and expose his chest. Somehow, he figures out where I am, turns and looks at me, then turns around to head back into the quakies, the second I see some shoulder, I let the .257 bark. When I reload and put the scope on him again, hes stumbling throught the quakes, enters a clearing and stops, just as Im about to let him have it again, he tips over. At this point Im thinking heel go about 160, which was my self imposed minimum. The closer I get, the more I realize he'll break 170! I let out a rip roaring holler, and sit down to collect myself. WHAT A BEAUTY!!!
PS. Ive only gotten in 4hrs of deer hunting in the last 2 years, since I couldnt hunt last year (ded. hunter) since I killed a 180 buck wiht my MZ in 2003, I know, BooHoo.

As he lay

Me with a big smile (note the pack frame, no ATV abuse here!)

This was my first year ever shooting two bucks.

1st My N.Utah meat buck.

I sure had a fun year. Already can't wait until next year. I want to try for three deer next year.

Tony,

Nice buck! I was hoping you had the ONLY 257. Is that a Weatherby caliber I presume? I have one and love it. Very devastating within 150 yards and great for 400 yard pokes. I need a new scope to match it though.

Here is my archery buck from this year.

When in doubt, floor it.

Yeah, Weatherby SBGM. Handloads with the 115 Barnes TSX, 3400 fps. I use the Burris fullfield II 4.5-14x42 w/ballistice plex. Sight in 1" high at 100, matches the marks out to 600. I didnt really need it for my 120 yd offhand shot! LOL!

I missed three great deer with my muzzleloader and went the easier route and was lucky enough to take him bedded. 27" 4x4

LAST EDITED ON Nov-14-05 AT 08:55PM (MST)[p]2005 was incredible year. I was fortunate enough to see some amazing country, put some meat in the freezer, and a mount or two on the wall. Most importantly I was able to share all of it with family and good friends. Here's a few pics.

Started the hunting season off with a book bunny in Wyoming.

Took the fly rod to Alaska for some fish hunting.

Finally got serious about getting it done, and found myself looking down at this amazing animal after a sleepless night of wondering if he was down.

Here's mine. I took him in the 2nd rifle season this year in NW Colorado. 120 yard shot using .30-06, Federal Premium High Energy 180 gr Nosler Partitions. Quartering shot entered through the last rib on left side and exited behind right shoulder. He is 26 3/4" outside spread and he grossed 177 5/8. (His net was 175).

Later, Brandon

I also say great post.

Looks like a banner year fellars. Some very nice deer were taken by you guys. My buck got the best of me, but it won't happen next year!!!! I am plotting my course already. These photos are getting me juiced up.

My only question is how did you guys get so damn ugly? I mean, really, it is every one of you.;-) I will fix that next year. You guys will be dazzled by my beauty if not my buck who is on the mountain still growing.

ktc,

I suppose you want to start a MM pretty boy contest now huh? We all know Moosie will win hands down.

Hey guy's

Here's one more to add to this post. He is a heavy 6X7 that I took on the second day of my Arizona Strip Hunt. This is my first mule deer. His spread is just over 30 inches wide and just over 25 inches high.

This buck was shot on the second day of the Utah rifle season in the southern unit. I am part of the dedicated hunter program in Utah. This was my 9th day in the field combining the archery, muzzleloader, and rifle. I was convinced that there were no mature bucks in the area. It just goes to show that the old one's just know where to hide. It was a pleasure to watch him for a few minutes, as he was very catious moving slowly down the draw I was in. I hope to get some in-the-field picures from my nephew soon.

Lone hunter - Those forks are awesome! I would love to hear the score when you get one.

Jeez, didn't anyone shoot a small one? All nice big bucks posted. Maybe I'll have one in a week. My fingers are crossed

Heres a nice one thats not a monster, but a good first buck of the lop-eared persuasion anyway, and I'm DANG happy with him. :)

Colorado 2nd season.

My buddy Shawn took this nice buck in NW Wyoming about 2 1/2 miles from the nearest trail. He's 27" wide outside and 24 1/2" inside spread. Nice cheaters. We saw two grizz on the way in to pack him out the next day...makes for a nervous packout.

I couldn't find a muley, but took a decent whitetail. This pic is my Dad with my NE Wyoming buck.

My wife's 2005 3rd season northern Colorado buck.

I grossed it at 214 and B&C measurer grossed it at 219. Either way I am proud of her for shooting a monster buck.

No field photos of this one yet - need to develop the roll!

No monster but he was a decent Wasatch Front foothills buck.

I still have a chance at a big Muley next month on a hunt back in TX, so we'll see if I can find one or not....

LAST EDITED ON Nov-19-05 AT 10:41PM (MST)[p]GREAT , GREAT pictures to everyone !!!

Never really got into the big deer this year . I did miss a real nice one though . Had a great year in 3 states . Passed on over 60 bucks this year .

Me with my deer . Freaking thing just about killed us packing him out . The amount of boned out meat was incredible . Not the biggest antlers but the body was enormous .

You're kidding me right? That is a really nice buck sheepshooter. Most people dream about shooting a buck like that.

I have really enjoyed the pictures and stories on this site and there are some real hogs taken this year.
Here is my buck from the November late season area 128-129 in Wyoming. He's a five by five with good eye guards. It was cold and we had plenty of snow up high. I had hunted several weekends looking for a monster and no luck. When this one stepped out I just could not pass him up. He is a great buck and the biggest I've taken yet.
My good friend Brian jumped into the picture and his wife Chris snapped the shot. They were as excited as I was.
My son Dayne was excited too when I got home. His turn will be coming soon.
What a great hunt!

My '05 Wyoming Buck. Had to pack him a long ways. I killed him on the other side of the ridge that you can see in the background. Sorry about the "headshot", I didn't have my camera with me. Public land, general unit, DIY.

my wife's 2005 montana buck. it was her first deer hunt and her first deer. she field dressed it and quartered it herself. it took alot longer than if i had done it, but it made me that much more proud of her when she got it done. heck, she even butchered it herself while i was at work the next day. what a wonderful wife, thank you Lord!!!

my 2005 montana buck. not as big as i wanted, but close to the road and i was having a heckuva craving for sausage so i layed him low.

Here is my dad with his first Whitetail on the right, Monty my hunting partner in the middle with his 24" 4x4 and me on the left with my buck that is only 20" wide but bladed and very tall. The bottom picture shows his deep forks. What a great hunt!

Here are some pictures that were sent to me and got some help from lucdavis on these so I could post.
The lucky hunter is Ken and he was able to get a late cancellation hunt on a ranch through an Outfitter in N. Colo for the 4th season. Ken got this buck last Thursday I think it was.
Is suppose to be maybe the 3rd largest ever taken on the ranch.

Rick,
Once again I see this outstanding Buck from your NV hunt, it sure is a beauty.
Sorry to hear that you didn't have a repeat in NV on your hunt, you are not alone there. Thanks for posting the picture.

Brian

Congratulations! Looks like another good year in the field for MM Members.

Here's my buck I took the with one day left on my Wyoming hunt, my patience finally paid off after passing on many nice bucks.

However on my Nevada hunt after seeing 20+ bucks the 1st. day I passed on 3 that I wished now I should of taken because it came back to haunt me, as I came home empty, but that's huntin.

rickmerkel112405.jpg

This was my first hunt in New Mexico (unit 23). Got a left over tag after not being drawn for ANYTHING in Arizona. Saw a couple of big bucks sparring in a clearing two days before the hunt started. That was cool, never seen that before. After seeing only does and small bucks opening day, I went back to the clearing for the evening of the second day.
I thought I was out there by my self, when a couple of close shots rang out just before 5 o'clock. Dang, that blows this stand I thought. I couple of minutes later, I see a truck coming up the road (yes, I was near a jeep trail) so I get up to talk to them as they come by. A guy and his wife had both shot at a 5x5 but missed. After they left, I didn't have time to move on, so I decided to sit it out, I figured on 10 minutes before "legal" sunset.
After 10 min, I was about to get up and go back to camp when I saw this big buck walk out from the tree line looking out towards the clearing. COOL! I didn't even bother with the bino's, I knew he was a keeper and I could see he had a nice rack. I let him walk out about 50 yds while I took aim with my Tikka 270 WSM and then fired-dropped him like a box of rocks. Even though I was alone, I let out a big ol' yell, as this was my first ever mature buck. He was a 3x4 plus 1 eye guard. Not a monster muley, but I was happy with him. 65 lbs of meat in the freezer and shoulder mount being made by my taxidermist.
Here is the picture. Can't wait until next year!
Good luck in the draws everyone and Happy Holiday's
Dan Bucks

and if this post appears twice, sorry, my computer freaked on the first time i tried to post it.

well here it is, the smallest deer in the forum, he is a 4X2 if you will, a straight two on one side and two on the other with two points coming out of his base that are both 2-3 inches long. didnt have too much time to hunt, and was the first legal buck i saw, and i couldnt pass up the packout to the truck, a long 100 yards downhill.
