Panguitch success? how was the hunt?

Just wanted to hear from the panguitch tag holders to see how the success was this year. I have a friend that is thinking about putting in for the unit next year.

My dad drew a tag for the rifle hunt. Beautiful country but seen very few elk. We hunted everything from the north to south and east to west. My dad did not see a single mature bull through the whole hunt which was discouraging. Needless to say he did not fill his tag. The unit in my opinion is a good unit. I have personally seen that it is capable of producing some nice bulls. My report sounds negative but thats because this year was a bad year. All the hunters that we talked to during our hunt had the same report. A lot were blaming it on the extra pressure from the spike hunt. So if that is to blame and they get rid of it next year than in theory it should be back to normal.?

My son had an archery tag and it was tough to say the least. We ate tag soup and I know of 3 other archers and one other rifle hunter who did too.

We "adapted" per so many arm chair archery hunters on here and still didn't have success. We sat water/wallows, chased bugles and had some spot and stalk chances. Although I think alot of our lack of success had to do with juggling his schedule with football and school... I know the unit was "off" to say the least! We ran 7+ cameras and moved them all summer in great areas and didn't see the number of big bulls as usual either.

Yes, spike and cow hunters were everywhere too. We hiked in 1.5+ miles one day before dark only to find a guy chasing the cows with a herd bull. Ran into this about everywhere we went and we weren't lazy either. They were sitting our favorite wallows, going in deep, calling, etc. It was like having 100's of LE hunters on the unit since they were chasing the same elk in theory at times and stomping the same elk country they might not normally hit with a deer tag. Personally, they didn't ruin our hunt directly per say, but forced the elk in deeper and tighter. IMO the DWR really blew it with the spike deal. I can't speak for other units, but it impacted this unit for sure.

+1 except the spike hunters did have a part in ruining my hunt they tried to chase some bulls i was after over to the open unit for there buddies dont know where they ended up.
i say if they do the spike hunt again next year dont put in for this unit. this unit is normally awesome but with that much pressure its no better than a genral season tag imo.you would not believe how dedicated spike hunters were! try beaver or sw des. monroe pulled some dandies off t his year also.

I just returned and wanted to see how everyone else did. i had a muzzy tag and scouted sun-tues and saw one bull then hunted wed-sun and saw 2 bulls. I was very disapointed to say the least. In the week I was there I only heard 1 bugle. I was struggleing to figure out if the rut was over or if it hadnt started yet. I walked around 15 miles a day in all the so called good areas. Out of the 3 bulls i saw the only one i could have shot was the one on tuesday of course. Im sorry to hear about everyone elses bad experience but im glad that it wasnt just me that was having trouble.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-28-09 AT 05:25PM (MST)[p]We killed a pretty solid bull on Friday morning. Heard about 50-60 bugles that morning. Drove down Thursday night late and had the bull back to camp by 10 AM.. This unit is different from other units, and people hunt in backwards. There are SO many elk in that unit but they rut different. Its flat country and bugles dont carry very far. You have to get way back in the jungle mess long before the sun comes up and catch em coming back from the edges/clearings etc. Send me a PM if you need some help, I grew up down there.
