My son had an archery tag and it was tough to say the least. We ate tag soup and I know of 3 other archers and one other rifle hunter who did too.
We "adapted" per so many arm chair archery hunters on here and still didn't have success. We sat water/wallows, chased bugles and had some spot and stalk chances. Although I think alot of our lack of success had to do with juggling his schedule with football and school... I know the unit was "off" to say the least! We ran 7+ cameras and moved them all summer in great areas and didn't see the number of big bulls as usual either.
Yes, spike and cow hunters were everywhere too. We hiked in 1.5+ miles one day before dark only to find a guy chasing the cows with a herd bull. Ran into this about everywhere we went and we weren't lazy either. They were sitting our favorite wallows, going in deep, calling, etc. It was like having 100's of LE hunters on the unit since they were chasing the same elk in theory at times and stomping the same elk country they might not normally hit with a deer tag. Personally, they didn't ruin our hunt directly per say, but forced the elk in deeper and tighter. IMO the DWR really blew it with the spike deal. I can't speak for other units, but it impacted this unit for sure.
