My ground shrinkage buck

I know i like looking at pictures so i guess i should post a few myself. I shot this deer the day before Thanksgiving, the day before my hunt ended form a bad Ankle twist while going for Elk. He was leaving some wild looking tracks in the dirt from a deformed set of front hooves.
I just never got a good profile to see what he all had, and with a long frontal view, and then a rearward view as he trotted away after busting me i had to make a guess that he was at least a 4x4 with heavy fron forks. Well it turns out he wasnt, but still a good looking deer. I gave him the old Texas heart shot, and then another in the boiler when i walked up to him. (he stood up to my surprise) I call him "crazy toes"

He was walking funny, like he had lead feet i guess i could say. The hooves curled up like an Elf's shoe, cant see it in the angle of the photo. I wonder if it has anything to do with him only being a 3pt?

RE: My ground shrinkage buck

the character of him makes this buck pretty cool. Nice deer, Congrats.

RE: My ground shrinkage buck

I have seen this deformity in whitetail. Im not certain what causes it but from what I understand it is somewhat painful for the animal.

RE: My ground shrinkage buck

I have seen hooves like those in suprise valley california on almost every deer. We call them pasture bucks. The deer live either in the pastures or on the edge of pastures because of mountain lions. The pastures are soft which dont wear their feet. Once it starts it isnt long before they are lion bait, they cant run as fast anymore. It is also usually on their back feet. They wear their front feet more digging beds. My pack goats also get this if I am not packing or trimming their feet once a month.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-29-05 AT 10:54AM (MST)[p]Congratulations!

That buck does have some nice fronts on him.

Good thing there wasn't snow on the ground...he would have floated his way down the slope!

There is a rancher down here in West Phoenix that bagged a huge muley that had hoofs like those. The interesting part is the antlers and hoofs had a green tinge to them. It was a very big deer, rack and body. He got it adjacent to his farm by his alfalfa fields, in the salt cedars. Interesting.

RE: My ground shrinkage buck

I think that's called slipper hoof and I have seen pictures of it on whitetails. Nice buck!

RE: My ground shrinkage buck

Was it just the fronts, or were the backs the same way. That is wierd. I would have taken him also. Nice buck.

Moosie, not with FEET like that but.. deformed Camel toes maybe...

The rear feet were normal looking, I thought about saving the hooves but after i boned out the meat, caped it, sawed the horns off, hung everything in the shade to cool, it didnt seem like it was worth it since i had to pack him out 2.5 miles by myself in 2 trips.

RE: My ground shrinkage buck

next time shoot the bigger one by the road you saw ... ;)

RE: My ground shrinkage buck

Nothing wrong with a texas heart shot, even more so when you got miles to pack it out :D an ass shot will put them on the ground anytime. Guys like you are too paranoid to put a load in another ass or what?

RE: My ground shrinkage buck

Nice mass at the base. Must of had a bad hang nail..LOL. Probably like shootin' one tied up, huh if it couldn't run? Just kidding. Better than any of mine. Nice deer. Thanks for posting the pictures.

RE: My ground shrinkage buck

Schmalts: Nice buck. Congrats on the nice buck and the nice shot!

Elkantlers: A guy goes out and drops a nice, unique buck and all you have to say is you can't believe nobody is flipping this guy chit about shooting it in the a$$? WTF? If you don't like it, move to the next post!

The only NON-BOBCAT wondering how Moosie knows about Scmalts? man dates!?!?
