Pathetic Backland Show

Did anyone see the Backland Experiences show on Eastern MD. It was pathetic to say the least. They had a blizzard come in, and dumped about a foot of of snow that drifted pretty good. Their guide tried to drive them after deer/antelope in a stupid exhample of snow driving. He was driving a dually diesel with summer tread on all tires and the duals still on. He did not even have a set of chains to use. They then went out with a four wheel drive tractor in another assinine display of hunting. They actually drove up on deer in the tractor and called it "stalking". He ended up shooting a little, wispy, horned dink just to kill a buck. They had seen some really nice bucks and they were on video. He shoots this dink for who knows what reason. It would have been better to explain why he did not kill a deer then to kill the deer he did the way he did. It is obviously about making a tv show then it is about the hunting.

I seen it, your right it was sad to see. Did you see next weeks show they'll be road huntting on I-80 in NV? Where is Jackie Bushman when we need him lol.

Kyle

I had to walk away from it. You can hardly call those men on that episode hunters.

Deadred.....road hunting on I-80 in Nevada? I've actually done that!

Just kidding.....but I'm always looking!

Steve

I saw it....I thought it was funny. Can't stand that couple, especially the wife, so that's why it was funny to me. I will agree, the guy did not have to shoot that deer, but he did, and it will add to the outfitters success rate.

Yep, I saw it too.
My first thought was.........MAN, 4 PEOPLE IN THE CAB OF THAT TRACTOR?!?! There was the guide/driver, the man and wife hunters, then the camera man (I think). It's possible the camera person was either the husband or wife too I guess. Plus two bows and the camera?!
I have to agree, why go shoot that dinky buck just to get a kill on camera. I would've had more respect for them if he would've explained the situation and pulled the plug if they couldn't find anything decent.

Yes I saw it. Stalking in a tractor was pretty bad. I have heard on another show that if they don't have a kill they don't have a show.
I have a friend who is an outfitter who has had Buckmasters hunt with him. When the show aired it was nothin like the real hunt. The guy hunting, with a bow, couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Oh yea and they cut out the part where he wounds a nice mulie and looses it!

i saw it and it made me cringe a little for sure. i mean it was kinda unique to use a tractor, but i thought they were gonna use it to get back into the country to hunt. couldn't believe it when he just got outta the cab and shot the deer. i think most, if not all, hunting shows have a lotta phony crap in em. some of em are probly all phony. any of em that have a guy hunting around big round hay bales or in fields with walking sprinklers in em are about the same as high fences and cornflingers, in my opinion.

I emailed the show about this, and they did respond back. They "firmly believe" I have no idea how much time and effort they put into making a show. The reality is I do know how much time they put in, but it still does not change the fact some of the shows are really pathetic from a hunters view. They never did respond to my main complaint on the hunt and how it happened. I think they took offense to me pointing out they were selling out a great pastime/activity for money, and how shows like that really help the antis. I wont get in a peeing match with them, but it just illustrates the reality of most TV shows. I think most serious hunters watch the show for the animals and not the hunt. It does not take much of a hunter to see all the phony garbage and canned scenes on most shows. Yes I watch them, but many times I will walk away or turn it off if it is real bad. I really like the ones where they shoot the animals off from spread corn or other feed after the animal crawled under and jumped over several fences.

SPEAKING OF SHOOTING SMALL DINK BUTT LITTLE BUCKS, HAVE YOU SEEN HOW EXCITED TED NUGENT GETS WHEN HE SHOOTS A "MICHIGAN SWAMP SPIKE BUCK" ON AIR. I MEAN THIS SPIKE STILL HAS MILK ON ITS LIPS, CANT WEIGH MORE THAN 90 LBS. THEN HE GOES INTO HIS COSMIC BLOOD BROTHER TRANS/ THEN RAMBLES HIS NORMAL GEBERISH FOR 10 MORE MINUTES. BUT ALOT OF HUNTERS SAY HES GOOD FOR THE SPORT,AND HE MIGHT BE/ MY JURY IS STILL OUT. YD.

YD....I agree. I've lost a lot of respect for Ted Nugent after watching his "Wanted Ted or Alive" reality show. They all need to grow up! I still like his music though.......

Steve

I did not see the Backland Experiences show in question, but I do recall one of the worst "hunts" I've ever seen. It was on OLN.

A guy was hunting in Canada - Sask, I believe. This guy is hunting from a tower stand on a power line cut. I can live with hunting from an elevated blind or stand, but I've never done it myself. He puts a couple of days and ends up shooting a nice big 10-point Whitetail. The problem came after he shot the deer and was talking about his "trophy." "Yeah, he came right in to the feeder." FEEDER!!! WTF!!! They never showed or talked about any feeder during the filming. I think they forgot to edit out this major faux pas.

P.S. - I crack up on Ted's "reality" show. It is funny seeing the City Slickers try to be outdoorsmen. Ted is the world's biggest Chickenhawk, though.

I didn't see the show but it sounds like it was messed up. Anyways, I read some posts that don't like seeing guys shoot dink bucks or Nugent shoot a spike. That doesn't bother me. Me, on the other hand, I get tired of watching guys on some ranch pass up great buck after great buck saying his G2's are too small or he has no eyeguards or whatever. I usually end up yelling at the tv saying, "just shoot one!!"

oh I agree everyone gets caught up in score. I never worry about score and shoot animals I simply think are shooters. I guess if I had 50 "pets" hanging on my office wall then maybe I would pass up another back yard buck. The worst part is when they shoot some little dink anyone can shoot anywhere, and then try to convince you what a great buck it is. Ted is one crazy wierdo, but he speaks out the way most of the other Celebs only wish they could.

I dont care if they kill small bucks as long as they show the shot of the buck as they pull the trigger. I hate the camera shots of the guy looking through the scope telling the world "Oh its a shooter Im going to take him**** Bang**** Well fokes I think I got him" and not show the deer. I call them the PEDA hunting shows.

Kyle

I didn't see that show but I have seen a bunch of real bad ones . I think there are some good shows too , I like Primos shows and a few others . AAs for Ted , well he really pushs for hunting , but he kinda gets animated in a freakish way , all his gibberish of blood brother and the spirits and stuff , kinda whacky . His music is alot better than the hunting shows hes putting out , but I've heard he's really cool and down to earth with other hunters . I say he's good for hunting , he says what he feels , just sometimes it comes out tweeked...NM

Kyle, don't you mean PETA.

As far as Ted goes, He is very passoniate about his beliefs in our sport and dosen't take any B.S. from anti's, he believes in harvest not just Trophy harvest. Definitely alittle weird but alot better than some TV hosts.

I think hunting shows should be held to a higher standard, do you ever see Fox sports cover a bunch of guys in the park playing softball? local Joes playing golf? no, because it's nothing special and nobody wants to see it, like shooting dinks and doe's,I don't want to see it. and I think Ted is a dork and a creep. ironic though isn't it, some of you like him for saying what he thinks but because I'm not a famous rocker I'm going to be a jerk for saying what I think. gee, I just made my point, nobody want's to see average stuff on TV or cares what an averge Joe Smo like me has to say.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-11-06 AT 07:44PM (MST)[p]Koyte thanks yes PETA
MMMM cooked flesh makes me thirsty

There would be a lot of people interested in a show that actually showcased average hunter's hunting general areas, w/o a guide, public land, even if they did not harvest the biggest trophy or were not successful. Although I think Nugent is sincere, I think his canned hunts and overall attitude reflect poorly on hunting to the general public. Hunting to me is not sitting in a treestand, waiting for some exotic/"wild"pig/fenced whitetail, to come to a feeder.

The most important thing is that we all stay on the same team!
Whether you hunt a high fenced ranch, your backyard, the most rugged back country in the world, with a guide or without it doesn't matter, we hunt. Ted Nuggent one of the best spokesmen we have for our rights we hold so dear. Sure his delivery my not be the norm, but that is why people watch him. I have seen him on two different talk shows this week alone. I think he is making a difference, at least keeping the public aware people like us are out there and are passionate. Of late I have read many judgemental and divisive comments reguarding how and where an animal was harvested. Who cares! We must be responcible hunters. We need introduce young people to the sport. We must continue to inform as many people that we can on the facts about hunting and conservation. Most of all we need to stay united.

PS, As much as I love Eastmans, I feel their over used slogan, "No Fences Here" has added to this recent arguing amongst ourselves. The statement might be fine if you live in Wyoming, but not if you are trying to manage your small family ranch in tha East.

Sorry for the outburst, Mike

LAST EDITED ON Jan-12-06 AT 09:46PM (MST)[p]I respectfully disagree and I do care about FAIR CHAISE. In fact I think that your high fenced, feeder hunts will be one of the biggest contributing factors to our loss of hunting privaledges. That's why it's called hunting and not shooting. This may be a little harsh, but let's not forget this is a Mule Forumn. If your so concerned about the anti's, let's police our own ranks and not try to say shooting a fenced, timer fed buck, shot out of a scent free, heated blind is hunting. Give your quarry a little respect.

I have seen some pretty bad shows on TV in the past. I have seen shots on elk that couldn't of had 4" of penetration and the next thing you see is a dead elk. I call horse crap on that.

As far as Ted goes I have never heard him talking about trophies. He hunts because he loves to and not because he is looking to put something on his wall. Saying that, I have a hard time watching his show because of all the spirit crap that he spews after the kill.

I think Ted is good for advocating hunting and he won't take crap from any anti or PETA member.............BUT, I can't stand watching him because of his sponsorship babbling! "The beast was taken by my Hardwoods camo Renegade bow set at 65lbs, with the supersonic, cryptonite lined, zebra colored mystical arrow tipped with a razor sharp Nuge blade that I just got done shaving with, and that the beast never heard coming because of the Limbsavers from Sims Vibration Labratories. My Scent Lok clothing did the job cuz I farted right before the mystical flight of the arrow sliced through the beast and he didn't smell a thing........now where is my busty wife Sharman..........?"

Let's be honest, if you were looking for a zone to put in for or a guide to hunt with, the things most look at is kill statistics or trophy guality. The higher the better. There are many guides that now claim to have 100% success. Some outfitters even guarantee you will kill an animal with no high fences. That sounds like a shoot to me. Like anything there are extremes. People say that they don't care about the success of the hunt, just being with friends and family in the outdoors. That's great, but sounds like camping to me. For me it is the whole package, the people and the game.

Mike

I'm with you COSA. Fair Chase is the most important issue for me. I do not believe the anti's will ever win unless we let them. Police our own ranks.

Lien2 you are one funny S.O.B. I laughed my butt off reading your Nugent line!

MrB...I agree with your post 100%. I think we are all hunters, whether it is shooting sparrows off the power line in the backyard, kicking up pheasants, calling elk, hunting a private ranch, waiting in a blind on a food plot, or backpacking into a remote wilderness. We as a group are all on different levels in the sport. Some of us are animals that will go to the extreme to take our game. (until we are too old, or too fat, or become unable to go where we once went) Others are less physically able to do those types of hunts. I'm not talking about disabled people here, I'm talking about the less athletic folks who can't hike that far, or go to the extreme.
Then there are the kids who eat up every tidbit of anything related to hunting. Then there are the elderly who used to be tough as nails, and hunted the world, now they just want to hunt to get the feelings they used to get in the good ol days.
Maybe a comparison would illustrate my point a little better.
Do we have to be Major League Baseball pros to play baseball?
Is it not baseball if we use a softball instead of a hardball?
Is it not baseball if we use a pitching machine for the kids?
Does using a batting cage make it unsportsmanlike?
What if the field is too small?
The bat is aluminum, not real wood.
Hunting means something different to each one of us. We all love it, and we all need it. Please don't belittle or talk down the guy who doesn't hunt on your same level. To them it is probably the best they can do.

Now I'm done preaching.
I'm going to go fishing for some planted trout out of the creek. Oops that ain't fishing, or is it????
