LAST EDITED ON Jan-13-06 AT 08:59PM (MST)[p]I now have 10 preference points for deer, and want to get an early start looking for that special place to hunt next year in Colorado. For several years now I have been applying to some of the RFW units, without any success. I had been holding out for Piney Valley, but understand they are no longer a participating ranch. Obviously having waited 10 years for this opportunity, I want to make sure that it counts and that I have that once in a life time chance for a monster buck. Any ideas on what I should do? Thanks for any suggestions

LAST EDITED ON Jan-14-06 AT 06:19AM (MST)[p]I assume that you are a Colorado resident, since nonresidents can't apply for Ranching hunts?

Assuming you are, then you should be able to draw some of the premier public land buck tags now since residents are going to get 80% of the tags. Should take less points than in the past. On the other hand, nonresidents were set back quite a few years since they will only get 20% of the tags. Will be interesting to see how the odds change after the dust settles.

For the most part the guys in the know seem to think the ranch hunts are not your best option with that many points.

I have PMed you with one idea I would consider if I were in your shoes.

venor, ergo sum (I hunt, therefore I am)

Are you bowhunter? Either way look at 2B/2C NM hard. I had some friends on the late season bowhunt and they were mezmerized by the quality they saw......huge stuff.
