Blacktail hunts?

I've never hunted blacktails and would like to give it a try within the next couple of years. Outside of what I read from Carter's publicaion, I'm fairly clueless when it comes to hunting them. The early archery hunts in July and August have always interested me, but I think they pretty much all take place on private land in California.

Any of you westcoast boys have some suggestions? I'd prefer to do it myself, but wouldn't rule out a guided hunt if it's reasonable, which they seem to be for the most part.

Might be able to work out a trade for muleys in Utah if you have interest in some swapping.

Hi Prism....I live right in the heart of some excellent blacktail country here in Oregon. Blacktails are a very difficult deer to hunt. There are not very many people who consistently kill big bucks. I would suggest you do a muzzleloader hunt in the rut...that is the best chance to get a quality animal. There are archery hunts also in the rut here in Oregon, but as you know archery hunting is more difficult! I would be more that willing to help you out if you want. Send me a private email if you would like. Brian

LAST EDITED ON Jan-14-06 AT 03:41PM (MST)[p]If you can't come up with anything feasible, apply for the C-1 zone in Calif. it's a little easier to hunt, terrain wise, rolling oaks and stuff, deer are easier to find also, there's less crowding of hunters, but as with most mule deer states, mature blackies are on a decline also, western Or. Is a good bet also now that I live here in Or.

But if you want a book head, gotta do the yolla Bolly?s wilderness but it can be very crowed there, But I'm sure BOHNTR?s suggestions will be enough for yah?..good luck....

Not sure I can compete with the above bucks but we have some great bucks here in Oregon like someone else mentioned. I live about 40 minutes away from some great blacktail country/hunting. I'm not a guide or anything but would be happy to give you any info you want, I have some great areas that don't get hunted too much because they are pretty rough country - and wet. We get lots of rain which is perfect for blacktail hunting the wetter and nastier the weather the better. You can buy tags for genereal rifle over the counter, hunting the last week of the season would be best, depending on weather you get in on the start of the rut which makes it a little easier. Anyway, if your interested send me a message and I can give you more info/locations you might check into.
Thanks
Frank

Here is one that I killed 2 years ago in the B-1 zone in N.Caly. My first buck with my new Winny 70 in 300wsm.

blacktails are definately one of the hardest hunts - so far -
i live in West Wa and the biggest bucks ive seen are in the high country.
it seems that once they loose there velvet they pretty much disapear but ive caught some niceones in the highcountry out in the open.
i would check into the olympic penninsula
definately the best chance for a book buckis in southern oregon or northern ca. more open country down there too.
good luck cant wait fot the next video

Thanks for the ideas guys. And thanks for the pics-it's like throwing fuel on the fire:)

I also live in the heart of blacktail country(southern oregon) & I have been hunting blktails for 25 years & know numerous public land areas to hunt both in california and oregon. also i try to hunt mule deer in the rockys every year, and yes i may be interested in swapping hunts. If you are after a book buck you must hunt hard and in many cases years before you get one that will score. but if you hunt c-1 in california this is out of the books geographical guidlines, stay in the b zones or west of I-5 and hwy 62 in oregon. email [email protected]
