I drew a late rifle tag and was wondering if anybody has any last minute advice. I am leaving on 11/02 so i will have 3 days to scout.I have did a little homework but i have never been to the unit so any help will be greatly appreciated.

I had the tag couple years back didn't see anything and ended up shooting a spike on the last day. wouldn't recommened wasting all your points and time on that tag.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-28-09 AT 08:31PM (MST)[p]so were you hiking alot..Where did you hunt? We have the tag already i dont know what you mean about not wasting your points on this hunt we already have the tag.

He is feeding you full of crap. You are going to do fine.
The Elk seem to winter pretty high.
Good luck

I think you made a mistake not scouting. It is what it is now, so those 3 days will be needed. I would concentrate at mid-elevation to start. Lots of guys have a tough time on the late hunts, but others do very well. You did not waste your points. You will be hunting a unit that will hold a 400 bull, a few 370 type, some 350, and lots of 300-350. Dont be one of those 380+ guys and you will do fine. I would stay away from the Antimony Road to the top.

wiki,

Keep in mind Utah allows for a tag return. Just do it before thursday eve because state guys dont work on Friday. Just a thought if it isnt working.

Try to find the bull that broke the tines on this Dutton bull. ;-)

I drew this tag 3 years ago, start up HIGH. Try Cottonwood or Hunt Creek you will do fine, it is a great hunt the bulls will be busted but take your time you will find a shooter that you like, sure wish I could go with you. Some of the better bulls will be tucked away a mile or 2 off the beaten path!

wiki,

Check your private messages. Utah400 should also have some good info for you in his pm.

I shot a 6x6 that went 350 he was 1 of 5 bulls in 4 days that was not busted up, I missed a big heavy bull that was really busted up that could of went 400 if he was all intact but probably would of been 350 as well, over all I was satisfied with the elk on the mountain and my bull I am sure you will have a great time and see a ton of bulls, also if you see a herd of cows check them out the bulls were still rutting and bugling when I drew a few years ago but most of the bulls were bachelored up.

I was on Dutton this year for the early rifle hunt, my brother had the tag. I'm going to try to send you a PM with some info.
