My 1st bull with Stinky's nemesis

Here is the results of my first elk hunt. I couldn't have done it without the help of Brandt, Scott and StinkyStomper's nemesis
30buck. He knows the mountain extremly well and he was gracious enough to show me all his honey holes and even took me to check his trail cameras earlier in the year. He is really a great guy that would give you the shirt off his back. He even changed his schedule around to stay an extra day and help me pack my bull out at the risk of causing trouble at his job. I can't thank these guys enough. 30buck's buddy Scott is a freaking stud, but I guess 5 years in the NFL will do that to a feller. 280lbs at 8-10% body fat. Needless to say, that guy can pack wieght. He helped out and he didn't even know me before this hunt. What a great time with a bunch of great guys.

I found this bull a week before the hunt in one of the places that 30buck said to check. I knew he was busted, but I figured I would get him fixed because he just looked to pretty on the good side. I knew once the broke side was restored he would be awesome. Not bad for my first elk.

Thanks
Oakbrush.

Congrats again buddy, Your one hell of a hunter, it was awesome to learn some things from you as well. Some guys say they are determined, but you showed it each day willing to go where ever you needed to, to kill your bull. Can't wait for future hunting memories with you.

I also need thank Paul Kendall(Prism). His info about other places on the unit was huge. Paul, that one spot that we talked about had a great bull in it, but 2 other guys found him as well and I didn't want to get in a mad dash type situation on opening day trying to beat someone to the bull. So I chose to go with this bull.

thanks,
oakbrush

great bull, with great people, what more is there to elk hunting?

thanks for sharing, and congrats!!!

Thats a nice bull, congrats! Maybe he busted himself up fighting w/stinkys bull!

Congrats on a super bull. I wish I could have been there. Great story. I love to hear it when fellow monster muleys members help others out. Not all of us can afford to hire guides and the guides on MM seem to know a happy medium of helping us out as well as keeping their paying clients happy. Thanks to all you guides!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-12-09 AT 01:44PM (MST)[p]You should looked me up. I only had one guy get info from me about bulls we left. I told him about one I left in a certain canyon and boy was he happy about the payoff. No I didn't do the leg work and these guys scouted their butts off but if you know the mountain this picture simply shows what the Dutton is capable of. Ya shoulda called me. I coulda put you on 2 other toads we left after the rut. I woulda been more than willing to help if you woulda called. They supposedly located a nice 400 bull but they couldn't find him on the opener and decided to take this bull.

mastiff didn't think it would go much over 370 but it ended up having 55 inch beams, 64 mass, 21 inch swords, and 12 inch 5ths. Everything else was good and put this bull right above the 380 bull his other brother killed off the boulder. Thanks to Slammy they were able to get that boulder bull, and thanks to team stinky they were put in an area to find this bull. Maybe next year.

Awesome bull.

Stinky,

This was my first elk hunt and I couldn't be happier. I told everybody that I was not going into this hunt worrying about what a bull would score. Me and the bull that I ended up taking kind of built a relationship during the week before the hunt and he is special to me. Once I forgot about trying to reach a certain score, the pressure went away and I had a great time. You guys did great, I feel I did great. But hunting is not a competition to me. It is just my passion in life and these guys were sure great to hunt with. We all have egos(me as well) and sometimes they get in the way of what is important about hunting. I wasn't around when you guys had your tiff, but I thought enough time had gone by that I could joke about it a little. I normally stay out stuff like this, but I am still on cloud nine and I don't think even Slammy could kick the smile off of my face right now. You guys get er done that is for sure. I will enjoy your future posts of your adventures

thanks,
oakbrush

You "built a relationship" with your bull??????
Thank you so very much for leaving those pictures out. The lord has been gracious and spared us all! ROFDL!

Yeah, I tried to keep it clean. As you can see by his broke rack he really likes it rough :)

Really, it was fun to watch him all week and relocate him about 2 miles away after he got bumped by some other guys scouting. It was a bit of an accomplishment for me. Since I have never hunted these critters before.

Great bull oakbrush, sounds like you had a fantastic hunt and that's what it's all about! :)

And i certainly wouldn't go kicking off anyone's smile, those are well deserved and too hard to come by during a tough hunt :)

LAST EDITED ON Nov-12-09 AT 05:12PM (MST)[p]Slam I know you wouldn't. just used your kick to make my point because I think it would be the strongest. What a great time. I spent a week on that mountain before the hunt started and I saw a lot of quality animals. I even saw some bigger than the one I got, but he was big enough for me. I even got to witness a late rut kick in on the south side of the mountain that was amazing to watch. I saw a herd of over a 100 cows with 15-20 bulls trying to cut cows out of it. Bulls were screaming and fighting all day. It was one of the coolest things I have ever seen out hunting.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-15-09 AT 09:35AM (MST)[p]Monte,

Thank you for all the info that you gave me about the unit. Really helped a lot and it was good to talking to you over the summer about hunting and other adventures. You ever get another turkey tag down here look me up bud.

Taxidermist pulled the teeth for me and he thinks my bull is at least 8-9 years old. He does about 60-80 bulls a year so I trust his guess. For my first bull all I wanted was a mature animal with a pretty rack. I am happy

thanks again
Jason

Jason,
I have never been on a late dutton hunt so didn't know if the info.I gave you would help you much but thought you might want to check it out
just in-case.I do know anyone that has hunted hard on that unit each day that goes by it can take it's toll on your mind and body the type of hunt that none of us will ever forget.Who agrees?I sure would like another chance come on expo tag.
No whimps allowed is what they should name that unit.Ha

sorry, just have to try and bring out 30buck. lol

It is a fact 30 that slamdunk and i passed that bull on 4 separate days. yes i loved his width and beam length but it just wasnt what i was looking for. heck we were even watching him the last day. rob who had a muzzy tag was even watching him on the last day of my hunt. one thing i did notice about him is that he was a heckuva lot better than that long frontend bull ur friend shot on the opener. he had great fronts but his top was gone. why did u shoot a 330 bull on the opener of the first hunt? Im glad ur friend got a mature bull but i thot u were a local who was bred right on that mountain who was one with the rock pile.

393, 330, which is it. Oh and it's my Brothers Bull not buddies. No BOUGHT TAGS, NO PAID GUIDES, nothing but buddies, family, and making good memories in the hills. Sorry if you can't get that same thrill. Hope you can build some everlasting memories on your future hunts.
