I am a new member to this site and was wondering if you guys could help me out. I have been looking for a place to hunt mule deer for for some time now and am just not sure where to start. I have done alot of whitetail hunting in the past and have taken some nice animals but am just not sure what state or what areas would be a good place to get started with mule deer. I am from michigan and know that I will have to travel a ways and that is not a problem. I do however have a budget of about $1500 plus traveling and lodging expenses to work with. Is there any thing out there in this budget range that is worth while or do you have any advice for a novice mule deer hunter. Any advice would be much appreciated thanks Scott

First you got to pick a state, and then draw a tag.. most are in a lottery system. being in Michagan I would suggest one of the Dakota,s, Nebraska, or wyoming.

NR Licenses are around $500 ( license and tag's), $1000 travel should get it done, camp out at a Forest service campground will save you $, get good optics, and practise your shooting, you may get a close shot but count on between 200 and 300 yards. A whitetail would run it self silly in mule deer country, it a whole different ball game.

The hardest part is drawing a tag..

Youll want to put in for Utahs coveted Northeast region, lots of good public land, lots of mature bucks. Some of the bigger bucks we call "Nomads" because they wander in and out of the region. Just make sure you keep the ATV on the designated roads while hunting this region, there can be some, shall we say, "uncouth" residents up there that will try to give your ATV a free "tune-up"....

Just Kidding!! Seriuosly, if you want a DIY hunt, Wyoming H or G would be tough to beat, but it may take you 2-4 years to draw a tag. You should be able to buy a landowner tag on one of the CWMU units here in Utah for 1500-2000 and be able to take a nice, respectable buck. Good luck with your trip out west!

Edit: If you want more specifics, PM me

Idaho has alot of over the counter tags and different units to hunt. Alot are decent units if you like to hike or are willing to get off the roads. Tag and license around $500.
Good luck.

WELCOME ABOARD..
In my humble opinion
Southern Utah or South Western Colorado are the easiest places
to draw and cut teeth on muley hunting.
However nothing is easy!

Welcome new guy,

Colorado deer tags are $296 for a deer tag in 2006. You'll need to apply by April 4. there is a $3.00 application fee and $.25 for search and rescue. This year you'll also have to buy a habitat stamp, I think it is $10.00

You'll want to camp not just to save money but to be near where yo start hunting in the morning.
