Public Land Alberta Bull

With only limited time to hunt Elk this year with numerous family and farm projects on the go i was able to slip away for a 4 day father son hunt in the fooothills of Alberta for Deer and Elk, We killed a good WT buck and doe, passed on many does and smaller bucks and was able to spot this bull. We hiked a mile from the road and saw him another mile away and was able to stalk within 470 yards. after several good hits from a Kimber 270 WSM the bull was down, my son (15) was so exited to be there and we had one of the most rewarding hunts yet. this is a general tag area with thick bush with a few new clearcuts. of course this bull lives in the farthest, nastiest one. while not a monster bull, for a public land general bull, I am so pleased.

I used my old 300 suzuki 17 years young for the recovery, two miles of uphill, no issues and I could not believe the power the old workhorse had on low range

nice fourwheeler. wait you say public land bull? how is it you drove your fourwheeler on public ground, is that LEGAL? unless its different from the US and regs???

I think 99% of elk hunters would agree...if you can walk in 2 miles to kill something, you can pack it right back out!

Muleyman, not saying that I agree but the regs vary even in the US, there are places you can drive anywere to recover downed animals. Some places you can drive 300' off roads to recover animals, and many places that you can't go off road at all. I've hunted Alberta a couple of times any they can go anywere they want.

First I should of said nice bull!

It seems more and more I see guys on quads running around the woods on these things either hunting illegally or "getting game out". Is the kid in the pic able pack something a couple miles? all I'm saying is instead of disturbing other hunters and the terrain with that wheeler, quarter it and pack it out a couple miles! Heck thats half the fun working at getting it out! Maybe the laws in Canada are different but most places I hunt, it's illegal to takem off road.

Again congrats on the bull...just pack it out next time IF you can...

Welcome to MonsterMuleys!!

Nice bull, awesome pic's, and great first Post!!

+1 on your use of the wheeler. If it's commonplace, accepted, and legal where you hunted, a wheeler is a great tool for getting a animal out quickly. Kinda wish i had one but have gotten by all these years without and will probably continue to do so.

It is legal in ab to use a quad after noon. Your idiotic comment about 99% of elk hunters is hilarious. I have shot elk in many places, heck I drove my friends 100 horse tractor 2 miles once to load my elk. I have also packed them 3 miles off the mountain. I NEVER hunt off a quad and put on a pile of boot miles ergo- why I was able to take an elk in an area with a 6% success rate. The only reason I posted my quad pic is that contrary to popular opinion, you do not need a 700cc unit to recover an elk.

BTW I had to re-register my username so I have been on MM for a while, Other than the Eliteist jokers, its agreat site!

one thing you are over looking Muleyman.... The bull is in a clear cut, I bet there was a road to the clear cut, those logs dont just get off the mountain by them selves.

And another thing why in the world would you pack one out on your back when you could get a atv to it and it was legal to do so. Thats just stupid.

Thats a great bull there battle river, good job.

Those old suzuki's are beasts.

I will add another story here. This was the old hunting area my gandfather, uncle and dad hunted in the 50's when they would pack in 20 miles with horses and hunt 2-3 weeks. Its a lot different now with oil and gas cutting roads all over, the logging cuts are helping the elk as more winter range has been created. Anyway, 18 years ago on one of my first elk hunts i hunted here with one of the original hunters 80 years old and quite crochitty a real hardass with real attitude. Whell opening day at noon abull walks up the cutline right in front of the tent and I missed him 3 times right from the flap! Whell the old bugger cussed me out bigtime and proceeded to tell me I would never kill an elk in this country again in my lifetime. He proceeeded to die that winter, taking my curse to the grave. Well I felt a huge hairy monkey leap off my back when I saw that bull go down I can tell you that, and I'm sure old Art is trying to smile somewhere up in Gods Wall Tent. The curse is now gone.

This is a pic of some success the old crew had in 1952
