A friend and I are looking at doing our first elk hunt together next year. Since it is our first time we are going to go with a rifle to help increase our chances. We have decided on Colorado but looking at the big game guide we are having trouble even figuring out where to start at picking a unit. Being completely new to this I would appreciate any and all advice you can give me on elk hunting. We are also thinking about getting a mule deer tag but the main hunt will be an elk hunt. I understand if you don't want to give me specific units but if you could give me some ideas on where to start that would be great. Also, any tips and pointers on hunting elk would also be appreciated.

Thanks for any and all comments and or suggestions.

natek24 good question? I am in the same boat as you. Search the archive threads, lots of good info there. Good luck to ya.

Thanks for the information guys it is really appreciated. It is just really over whelming when you look at the map of all the units and trying to pick one. I am glad that I started the planning early for this trip as it seems like there is a lot to get done before I will be ready to go.

Dutch thank you for the offer. If we end up in the Durango area I will let you know.

If anybody else has any information that a new elk hunter would find helpful please share it with me since I am going to need all the help and information I can get.

Thanks again,

Nate

Pick a decent over the counter unit then plan to spend the next 5 to 10 years learning the unit before you will feel you have a handle on what the animals do when the weather comes, when they get pressured by people, etc.

As an out of state hunter you have a disadvantage of not being able to spend much time on the mountain each year learning it. My dad and I have been hunting SW CO for the last 10 years and are just now starting to get the feeling for when we need to be in certain places to intercept the animals. It took us 7 years to get our first animals.
