Getting back into horses and would like your input on how you like your horses and how they work for your type of hunting and outdoor use(post a pic if you have one of your favorite trail partner)

In my book, without a question it would be a quarter horse. I don't think any horse can match their temperament, strength, and durability. Some paints now days are bred with 50 to 100% quarter blood also.

Quarter Horse/Thoroughbred cross make pretty good pack horses but can have a pretty rough gait - the smoothest riding of all is a Quarter Horse. It was bred for the west - tough, smart, dependable and quick.

I agree quarter horses are tough to beat for this duty, but I've seen several breeds perform well. Don't let anyone fool you--it's not so much the breed as the individual horse. You need an animal with a good head--calm, quiet, not excitable, and one with good balance and coordination. All this you can test for yourself before purchasing an animal. Request taking the animal on a short trail ride, or at least get him in an arena with some obstacles to see how he handles walk, trot and canter through them. And take along a plastic grocery sack just to see how he racts to the noise and motion of an unfamiliar object.

I like fox trotters. They aren't rough ridin', really durable, and fairly strong. I also like quarter horses too.

I keep hearing about these quarter horses. How good can a horse be if you only paid a quarter????

I don't know much about horses. Does it show?

Just trying to add a little humor. Sorry!:)

LAST EDITED ON Feb-12-06 AT 09:33AM (MST)[p]I think you can't go wrong with several different kinds of horses it will be all in the training, Just the other day in the newspaper(Daily Press Victorville Ca) here they had some mustangs that was caught for the Marine Corp color Guard(Palomino's) from a wild herd in Nevada that will be trained at one of their prisons(Nevada State Prison Carson City) for the Marines, it's a great program that teachs these horses to handle cars ,sounds, movements, etc because all the parades they are in.
I know that the prison system in Colorado and Nevada sell horses that are trained to the public so you might check that out.

If you are really interested in a mountain horse, a breeder in the Kalispell, MT area recently tried to "make" his own breed of mountain horse. I don't recall much about it, but he was crossing fox trotters with some type of imported horse. Supposedly they are excellent on the trail, with an extremely smooth gate. All I remember is that his name is Ray.
