I have six points and basically don't understand the Utah draw system - atleast not fully. In another post someone asked if they would draw with X points. Replies chimed in, saying that he definitely would. BUT, I thought Utah operated on BONUS points where nothing is for certain, rather those with the most points have the best chance at a tag, but again, nothing is gauranteed.

Also, is there a unit anyone could reccomend that I would have a good chance to draw? PM me as I am certain you, and even I, would want to keep it that way. The only thing I would like to have would be an area that will provide a FUN hunt. Thanks.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-20-09 AT 04:59PM (MST)[p]In Utah they take half the tags and give them to the people with the most points, and call them Bonus tags.

So if there are 100 tags they would give 50 of them to the guys with the most points, so lets say there is an area where there is nobody else putting in with more than 6 points like you and there are 35 guys that have 6 points that means they are guaranteed a tag, now there are still 15 of the bonus tags left so that would mean that the guys with 5 points get a shot at those tags, but only 15 of them would get a tag, so if there was 45 guys with 5 points then 15 would get bonus tags.

Now with the other 50 tags everyone gets a shot at those tags, includeing the guys that had 5 points that did not draw.

It really is the fairest system out there if you ask me.

Clear as mudd isnt it....LOL hope you can make sense of that.

Here is a link that might help you understand it a little better I picked a unit that you would have had a 22.7% chance of drawing in 2009 with 6 points if you are a resident, from that you should be able to figure out how good of a chance you will have next year. http://monstermuleys.hunterstrailhe...esident=Resident&points=6&type=Late&year=2009

By the way you can do this for any unit in the state, just click on the link that says "check your draw odds" at the top right of every page in the MM Fourms.

Good job JakeH!

6pts would be a stretch on any non-ressy draw pool, no matter the weapon of choice.

Ya got nothing to loose so shoot the wad and go like Pahvant rifle or something way out there!

why you can not go of utah dwr data is not correct i know guys in vernal with max points for deer or elk who did not draw tags in book cliffs so data is false why do even have dwr why$$$

If seeing/hearing animals dictates a 'fun' hunt, then the units I would pick are:
Book Cliffs - Roadless
Wasatch
Central Mountains - Manti
Fish lake
Pahvant
Boulder

This list is in no specific order, but the Wasatch and Books are favorites of mine.....

Most elk units in Utah give you a great chance at a mature bull. Some better than others and the above list is pretty good.
But as was stated 50% of the tags go to people with less than top points and you could be one of them in any unit in Utah.

And why "Why" believes the dwr has anything to do with his supposed friends not drawing is beyond me!
The DWR has nothing to do with the draws. The draws are handled in Fallon NV. by a private company! THAT'S WHY!

Why, I hear people say this all the time around here, (I live in by Vernal) that someone they know put in with max points and didnt draw,(when is what they mean is they had 8 or 9 or what ever it took to draw a tag that year and didnt draw) but it always "well this person I know had enough points and didnt draw so thats crap" but I rarely hear it from the people that it happened to.

And on the rare occasion that it is somebody that said it happened to them I will ask them if they put in with somebody else, and most of the time they say yes, too witch I ask well how many points did they have, and they come up with a number that is usually lower than there's, or they just dont know how many the other person had, and then I exsplain to them that if they have 10 points and so and so has 4 then they really only have 7 points because they combine both peoples points and divied them by the number of applacants in the group, so 10+4=14 14/2=7.

I hear it all the time, and there is always a reason that is not the DWR's fault.

Im just saying.
