We are making a new Hunting Rifle and would like to get everyone's opinion on what their 4 favorite calibers are. Our rifle has a quick caliber conversion option so we would really like to know all FOUR of your favorites and not just one. Here is a list of some of the calibers we are considering, however if you would like to suggest any others please do. Also any recommendations on barrel lengths would be appreciated.

300 RUM
338 LM
300 WSM
300 WIN 24" or 26" barrel
375 HH
375 RUM
270 WSM

Thanks for your help!

0z, he asked for 4 selections. You gave him 6, then called it 5!! LMAO :)

Being this is the Elk forum, i'll pick those as if were headed out to hunt Elk.

30-06
.300WSM
.300 Win mag
.338 win mag

The western, rocky mtn. guys I would bet we be 75%+

30.06
.270
7mm
300win.

I know they aren't new and improved, but they are undeniably successful. A lot of guys like the reciever who catches the touchdown, then breaks out some dance and jumps into the stands, and acts the fool, I like the one that just hands the ball to the ref and runs of the field. I am old school. The short mags, mags, huge anti aircraft guns are great(all guns are good guns), but I am old school and these four to me are the big four, hands down.

For Elk the 300 Win mag is all you need, 24" barrel will get you right at 3200 with a 180, try that with a short mag . you can do a little better with the biggest 30's but I've never needed to.

For deer size game I use the 270 WBY and 264 Win mag, but there are lots of great choices.

7mm Rem Mag
.257 Roberts
.222 Rem
and if I needed a bigger gun;
.338 Win or .416 Taylor

Good luck picking the 4 rounds to chamber.

Phantom Hunter

30-378 elk and deer
338-378 anything I want

.338 Win Mag.

.338 Win Mag.

.338 Win Mag.

.338 Win Mag.

.280 Rem.

Why would you want a gun with interchangable chambers??? There are so many "hot" versatile .30 cal cartridges out there that can
so everything with no adjustments when you go species to species.

Add a varmit rifle and you're set.

Iffen I wasn't in love with the .338, I'd go with a 300 RUM or ole reliable 300 Win Mag. and just kill things. The .338 is probably over kill for antelope and deer but none of em have ever complained enough for me to notice.

>who is "we"? and for god
>sake its CARTRIDGE not caliber.

lol....you'd think someone preparing to make guns would know this...

I also would like to know who is "we" and why would anyone want to try and jump into a market that is so oversaturated every major manufacturer has to offer a $300 special just to try and maintain marketshare. Good Luck to you. From a consumer standpoint I say the more the merrier. From a business angle I think it's suicide unless you can offer something that no other rifle manufacturer can offer.

I'd like to hear more about your rifle. Are you going for the custom market? That's pretty competitive as well.

Although I use my 300WSM for everything, I like the idea of having a popular caliber. You known no matter where you go in the US, you will be able to buy 270 and 30-06 rounds over the counter, even in the middle of nowhere. That's why I like these rounds. .308 is also a great round where ammo is always available.

30-378 as posted earlier is about 100 bucks a box (20 rounds)... nice caliber but expensive to shoot!
