Had these pics emailed to me today. Hopefully I don't piss anyone off but that's what happens when your pics go over the net.

What a shame! It's hard to see but that tape is stretching out at 33 inches.

Thats too bad , what a beautiful buck . I hope he bred a bunch of doe this past fall . Nice snow , wished we had some here in NM...

Lowe,

What part of Washington did this happen? That is too bad, what a waste of such a great Buck. Guess the F&G will get the head, right?

Brian

What a shame. That is a tremendous buck! Are you at liberty to share where he was killed? Thanks for sharing the pics!

Obviuosly the buck was picked up by WA DOT. I assume the WDFW was informed but I have no other information. I would hope that the head would be mounted and put on display somewhere where the public could view it. I'm going to make some calls next week and see what I can find out. I doubt that this one was thrown into one of the pits where they usually throw road killed animals.

I bet some one was watching this buck hoping to pick up his drops. He probably would have been a shooter on one of our late hunts. :)

Any guesses on a score? I think he would gross over 200".

That's a nice buck.

Too bad he had to go that way.

Lowedog,
I know where that picture was taken, my question does buck look like he might have a little blacktail in him I know he's a little far from the crest trail but body and horns have alot of blacktail chararistics in him.

I'd say something but I'm too busy cryin' over here.
What a shame.... Stunner of a buck. I know that area, you can tell by the "genes" too... Thanks for sharing Mark.

I didn't know Wash. DOT was allowed to drink during their shifts.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-25-06 AT 06:14PM (MST)[p]Chef....your right, the guy does look a little pie-eyed in that second pic. :)

What a friggin' dandy though!! I would have loved to have kept that buck if it was me that hit him....hopefully they do display the head somewhere.

I don't know about the balcktail thing. I have never seen one around here. I have heard others say they have though.

So, when the driver saw that buck in the road, did he hit the brakes or stomp on the gas pedal?

I do not believe that I am seeing this. I was on my way to Manson for an afternoon basketball game on January 7th and our bus driver had to stop right on HWY 97 right near the WSDOT shops about 5 miles from the intersection of HWY 2 and Hwy 97 outside Leavenworth. I cannot be positive, but WSDOT crews were dragging a deer from the road and he was HUGE. It has got to be the same buck. Again, I cannot be sure, but the photo looks about right for the area. There are good bucks in this area that are from a local herd that live around the orchards. Amazing that the photos are on the net.

Leavenworth, my favorite town in the whole state of Washington. The wife and I have camped out there at Icicle River Campgounds on two different occasions, she just loved that town and all of the fresh coffee and pastry smells in the morning walking down the streets.
Sorry about getting off on a dream, but that Buck is a DREAM TOO.

Thats a dandy buck but why does everybody have to be so dang secretive. It was killed on the road so tell where it was, I guess if the side of the road is your honey spot then you can be secretive. Thanks Missinmt for saying where it was killed, not like im gonna head up there for deer season cause one big buck was killed on the road.

I Agree Brian! We go to Leavenworth 2-3 times a year, my favorite place in Wa. too. In Der Sportsman they have a 31" er that a guy shot near town last year on private land. There's some great genetics and country around there. I hunt near there in the Blewett area sometimes. That is some steep country...

Why does it matter then where it was killed? :)

It's pretty sad really. Unless someone can say that deer was a known animal from X location, it could have summered 20 miles from what is otherwise winter ground where it was killed. More or less that gives you almost to E-burg, to the Crest north to GPW across to entiat-swakane and back to peshastin.

I guess we have to be so protective of a deer we didn't shoot, don't konw where it came from and one guys would have to hunt 60 square miles to cover it's potential range that we can't even say where on the damn road it was killed.

This is what the "fraternity" of hunters has come to these days. No one should give up their specific location but I see so damn much effort to protect a hunting spot or even a perceived one that it's become a joke. In early or even general seasons the deer like this are in places that even if you gave GPS #'s to folks there'd be 2 in a hundred with the stones to try and get there on their backs.

He was a great deer and could just have easilly been killed in Entiat, Manson or Methow. Crap, hope I didn't let the cat out of the bag, those places will be crawling next year.

Just a funny-similar story; Just two years ago I was hunting a good hike-in blacktail area and there were no other hunters around. I saw a few deer in a few hours, then hiked back to my truck just before dark. Sometime when I was up hunting a car had hit a buck nice enough that they cut the horns off of it. It was laying 3' from the gate I hiked in at. $%^&

Great pics. Thanks for sharing them. It's encouraging to know this caliber of bucks are still out there in Washington. Like was said before, hopefully he passed on a lot of his gentics before he left. As for those of you belly-aching over details about where the buck was found. Don't expect every person who posts a picture to write a detailed, notarized statement of all the who, where, what and hows associated with the picture. Who the hell cares? Just enjoy the pics and quit looking for something to complain about!

You know, if his "genetics" are so great, why do the big ones always seem to find a way to get smoked on the highway? Why can a buck like that elude hunters, cats and assorted predators, but can get taken out by a Festiva or a Yugo? In my days as a lad in Big Sky country, I would HMAO all year long and then some grizzled old rancher would nail a 30 incher with his rig running to town for smokes and beer. Go figure. Ughh........

I suck at scoring deer, what you think this buck would score. need an idea for when i draw my buck tag this year with 9 points. :)

kirkl....what the hell you trying to draw that it's taken you 9pts. so far?? Dang...you should be about ready to draw a second one by now. :) There's only one unit that I can think of that might take that long to draw....and I don't have the patience to wait for it while my partners are drawing every 4-5 years. Good luck this year.

BTW....I'm the one that hit that deer and I'm not telling anyone where it was....ever! So there!!

I'm all for what CFHUNTER said, enjoy the pics, guess the score but it really doesn't matter where it was killed. As far as not posting where it was good for Lowedog, why broadcast an area(even if general) to thousands of people, let them do their own research and focus in, its not really that hard to do.

Muleyslyr, im trying to get a good unit with a chance at a good buck, dont want to put in a unit just cause it has lots of permits. Ill do that after I draw my first one.

Kirkl, I'm in the same boat as you. 8 or 9 points. I can't remember for sure but it sure is getting old not drawing a tag! I know guys who have drawn 2 or 3 times in all those years.

This is the year though! :)

And my guess is 198" gross.

-Lowedog

Well good luck to ya. Im hopin this is the year also. Im getting back up on elk points also after drawing in 2000.

I'm hanging in there with 9 too you dawg, so you better share one of those 5 permits.

Sweet looking deer. Too bad he had to bite it that way. He must have died next to the shop because they usually don't hang around the side of the road like that. tooo many chainsaws.....

Just out of curiousity, I wonder if that sign that he died by reads deer crossing for the next 25 miles. Thats the ticket for finding secret buck spots you know.....follow the signs and set up on the crossings. : )

The sign does read watch for deer next 25 miles. I went by the place where the deer got hit yesterday. Not suprised right there at all, but what a shame. Gorgeous deer, and i think he still had a year or two to keep growing.

Geez....kirkl and bone with 9pts. each! I could just see you two huntin' together in the land of the 40"ers.....wouldn't that make for some good stuff on here? :)

-Would work for me too, going on six points here.
I guess I didn't realize the buck was road killed in someone's "hunting" area. Logic would dictate the first question anyone's going to ask is where? Last I knew you couldn't hunt within several hundred yards of any paved road and most land adjacent to paved roads is private anyways. Believe me, I get bugged out by too many hunters in my area, but that's why I hike my butt off. Doesn't bother me a bit telling someone about a road killed deer near private ground in my "general" hunting areas. A point I don't hear a lot of people make is a fact documented by many fish and game studies. You have a much higher percentage chance of getting a mature buck with other hunters in the woods. Biologists have observed mature bucks countless times that held tight in small patches of cover until finally flushed by a hunter. They will hold up in the smallest patch of cover and entire season, if no hunters approach. It's ironic, a lot of people who get bent about a road-killed deer post have no qualms about slapping up a pic of an actual "hunting area" offroad.
