Just curious to know everyone's opinion about elk hunting with a 180 gr ballistic tip out of a 300 Weatherby?

Go with the Nosler Partition in 180gr forget that BT.

Go buy two cows from a rancher. Shoot one with a ballistic tip and the other with that pos penetrator bullet mentioned before. You will never shoot anything but a ballistic tip again. lol

I think i just punked kilowatt. rofl

Stinky,
You go ahead and use your Ballistic Tips and I will use the Partitions....I like my steaks and chops.........unlike you and all hamburger meat.

Talking fom experiance my dad shot a spile bull with a 180gr balistic tip poor penitration even at onlo 200 yards i would advise the accubond but that is just me

Bad idea on the NBT for elk,I shot a bull at about 200yds with a NBT right in the shoulder blade and the bullet exploded to pieces.Yeah it broke his shoulder and he was not going to far, but I had to put two more rounds into him to finish him off. After that experience all I've used out off my 300WBY is federal premiums in either the barnes triple shock(shot two bulls-dropped both of them one shot)or the trophy bonded bearclaws(i think they discontinued them-but great bullet too). The NBT is a very accurate round and great for deer or smaller game, but for elk I'll stick with the barnes triple shock. The barnes is a lead free bullet so there is less barrel fouling than lead based bullets and I shoot one inch groups out of vanguard sub-moa and when it hits them you will usually find the bullet on the oppisite side in the hide(intact)

Ive had my fair share of problems with ballistic tips on magnums case in point my son shot his first elk with the 7mag 150 nosler bt 150 1st shot spined him obviously put him down 2nd shot i told him to put in the neck as the bull tried to get up he shot and i thought he missed 3rd shot same story neck shot i couldnt tell he had hit him entil he started sprayimg blood like a fountainboth i was pissed thinking my son was pulling the shots not the case neck shots were 3 inches apart first and last time i use bts in a mag.

I have been shooting the 180 Ballistic tip out of my .300wby for years and have not had a problem............yet.
My Mark V loves this round and until i see reason to change, i won't ;-)

I'd go with whichever bullet your gun shoots best and you are most comfortable with. The previous posts are nothing but opinion. Every bullet could fail. I personally prefer the Barnes Triple Shock. I am comfortable enough with the performance to take on any big game animal in North America with them. Again, it is your preference.

as far as my wby experience goes i will never shoot a BT, my bullet of choice is the remington coreloct 180gr. i killed my deer this year at 512yds with one shot he only went six feet, i shoot a cow two years ago with it and she dropped in her tracks. i have yet to need a follow up shot even though they are not a high dollar or hand loads, they work great.

300 Weatherby is a great round. I would load a bonded Accubond in the gun. You will get the same ballistic performance as the ballistic tip (BT), they both have the same ballistic coefficient in flight.

However you will have peace of mind with the bonded core. The Accubond will retain 60-70 percent of it's weight, have a nice mushroom and tremendous impact energy.

I have wathced a lot of bulls fall to the Accubond. I took my bull with a lighter weight Partition.

The ballistic tips have great performance on thin skinned game. The big 180 grain BT will kill but if you are going after a Big Stinky why gamble. My two cents... Good Luck.

Although not same setup as yours, the 180 AB in my .300 WSM really laid out an oryx a few years ago. One shot one kill, no tracking. About an 150 yard shot.

Get the best of both worlds, use a Nosler Accubond. Shot everything with this load.

For what it is worth I shoot 165 grain hornady SST's and I have been very impressed with them. I don't experiment much but I have shot 3 spikes, and a big bull with them and they have been great. 2 of the 3 spikes were 1 shot kills and the other took 2 because I didn't hit him perfect, he was 487 yards away and the second hit was between his hide and body. My big bull was 400 yards moving and at a poor angle. The first shot entered in front of his hind quarter and ended up in the opposite front shoulder. I did have to shoot him a couple more times but he sure slowed down after that shot and that is the only slug I retrieved.

I have been using 175 Core Lokts for along time in my 7MM and have been very very happy with elk and deer. A budy uses Barnes ballistics tips in his 270WBY and has always been happy but I don't believe he has shot any elk.
