375 H &H overkill for elk?

LAST EDITED ON Feb-10-10 AT 06:43PM (MST)[p]not if you can shoot it,
edited to add; Chuck Hawk's rifle recoil table shows a recoil of 36 foot pounds. That is too much for me since a 30-06 is about 20. I ain't saying it's too much for others but I would develop a flinch with that much recoil.

heck no, if you can shoot it well, Ive never shot one, but I did kill my best bull with a 378 weatherby.

Bigger is better as far as I'm concerned. I love my 338 win mag on elk and deer......I know, I always here 338 is to big for deer. But I always say " If the buck (or bull) of your life time steps out the last min. of shooting light, I'm not going to be trailing that sucker all night, or worse yet lose the buck. With that said I still think its very important to make perfect shot placement.

Shoot a 375 H&H with 260 grain AccuBonds and you have the ultimate elk killer. Another friend of mine swears by 210 and 235 grain Barnes -X bullets in his. Basically, the velocity and trajectory of an '06 with twice the knockdown. Put a Limbsaver pad on it and you will shoot it well. A 338 kicks the crap out of me, and I'd much rather shoot my 375-416-450/400 Nitro with slower recoil velocity and a great pad.

I shot 43 head of plains game in 2 trips to Namibia with mine, from jackals to 2000# eland. Killed several deer, one elk, and lots of coyotes here in Idaho. It is a proven killer anywhere in the world.

375 H&H , I prefer my 375 Ultra Mag,shoots as flat as a 270 with a shiz load more knock down.Im not big on chasing. No better feeling than dumping one in its tracks.

As they say size does count. Use it and be happy.

+1 I'm a .338 guy myself but a friend has a 375. He had RCBS make custom dies built from fire formed brass and he shoots 235 gr Barnes. Muzzle brake and good recoil pad kicks less or the same as my .338. Better than 06 tragectory. He's taken elk and moose with it.

The obvious answer is that a .375 is not REQUIRED for elk. That said, I've killed elk and numerous african animals with a .375. I really like my .375. Practice, and with good shot placement you will have incredible results. Don't make the mistake of thinking since you have so much "power" that even a shot in the hoof will drop them dead. Shot placement is still key. I prefer 300 grain Barnes TSX in my .375. Absolutely awesome results.

Now, having more than one rifle, I usually use a 300 Win or WSM for most of my elk hunting. A lighter package, with a little flatter trajectory, that is still extremely effective on elk.

To each his own.

I would have to say the .375 would not be my first choice for long range. OTher than that bigger is always better IMO.

Does everyone hunt from an ATV? I'd hate packing a .375. My .340 Weatherby is heavy enough. It seems a bit large but it sounds like it would work.

Why would you think a 375 is heavier than your 340? Your knowledge on guns runs par with your knowledge of politics..

The .375 H&H is one of the all-time great hunting calibers, and serious elk medicine. The recoil is not as bad as some seem to think, more than a .338 but definitely less than a .416. While I've killed game with a 375, I've never owned one, though I hunt all the time with a 338, and a 416 hoffman when in Africa. I've always admired how well a 375 works, and wish I had one.

My son wants to purchase a new rifle for Africa, as well as big bears here. My advice was to get a 375 and you won't need anything else. It'll work from steenbuck to elephants, and work well too.

Maybe because I've packed both. My .340 is heavier than my .257 and they are both identical except for heavier barrel and shells. I'll have to explain later. Pretty sure I've forgotten more about guns than you'll ever know but feel free to show us your brilliant genius.

LMAO, you truly are a moron ziggy. you shouldn't take the lead, let dude come up and tell you your opinion, you'll look slightly less dense.
every 375 made must be just like the one you carried huh??

I'll keep it simple for you simpleton, use the Mk5 for an example. 340 vs 375, same contour barrel, same action, same stock..larger hole in the 375 = less metal..if you'd like anything else explained for you just ask.
you want to discuss firearms with me, go ahead. say something stupid (a given) and I'll rub your nose in it.

funny , that with all your knowledge, you never post in the gun forum..you must have forgot everything, eh?
