Hello Everyone just wondering if anyone has done any hunting in this unit for mule deer. I have bben doing some homework and it looks like it may be the perfect unit to do a archary mule deer hunt and should only take a few preference points to draw a tag. Just wondering if anyone has been in the unit and what the terrian is like and any info about the quality of bucks is. From what I am told the mule deer population is doing very well there and a person should be able to have a good chance at a respectable buck. Anything you can tell me will be greatly appreciated. Thanks All

Hey guys I'm new here live in wisconsin just trying to figure out somewhere I will have half a chance at a nice buck without waiting the rest of my life to get a tag. Anything you could tell me sure would be appreciated. Shot my fist muley last fall in Wyoming. Thanks

Go to the start of this forum and look for the words "search" above and type in what you want to know of which unit and you will find a talk about this unit.

My sources tell me it took 2 points to draw an archery tag last year. Could be 2 or 3 this year. Unit 55 has been a coveted tag the past few years. Should be an opportunity for 180-200" P&Y bucks. You probably won't get a bow opportunity for bigger bucks in velvet anywhere else in N.A.

By looking at the numbers I estimate 2 maybe 3 points to draw. I'm just looking at the website and taking a guess.

Has anyone been in the unit hunting. I understand its suppost to be a great unit for nice bucks but confussed why it only takes a few points to draw for an archary tag and a lot longer to draw a rifle tag. I appreciate your info guys.

It takes more points to draw the rifle tag because more people apply for the rifle tag. It also takes more points to draw the 3rd season rifle than the second season for the same reason.

Higher demand tags take higher points to draw.

If your an avid bowhunter, this works in your favor.

I'll tell you why - it takes too much skill and patience for the average hunter. You can't just go lob in shots from across the canyon. [just read thread "What rifle to get for Long Range" - "i have a 7mm rem mag. and can consistently make shots out to 600 and even 700 yards"] I've seen some pics of incredable CO mulies in velvet in the Huntin' Fool.

When 50 yds is your max range, you learn how to think and stalk like a real predator.

I understand that it is a lot harder with a bow and that is why I am interested in a hunt like that. Shot a muley with a rifle last year and just want something more challanging than that. Anyone know anything about the unit though. From what I have found should have great deer population but have never been there.

Been there during the third rifle and in the summer. They have been getting hammered with snow and cold and possibly shed hunters. Hard to say if they (deer) will fair well. Having said that, you should find plenty of mature bucks above timberline in the northern end of the unit. There were lots of bucks last summer there, but don't expect to see a 200" buck. They are very rare anywhere. You would be hunting open, steep terrain in the alpine basins. Do you have 3 points??? Good luck, Steve

If you want to bow hunt that's fine, but if guys would hold out for a book class buck hunting with a rifle wouldn't seem so easy. everyone goes out and whacks the first dink they see and then say " I need more of a challenge" raise the bar and rifle hunting is all the challenge you'll need, it keeps me pulling my hair out.

Joined some friends last fall hunting 2nd season NE of Gunnison; I was tagless but managed to remove a number of yotes from the area. One individual in our group had a buck tag - he was waiting for the big one, unfortunately it never crossed his path. We did manage to see a good number of nice bucks; most parties seemed to tag the first 4x4 they came across. Not sure how much pressure the area gets during archery...
