The new draw odds has got me wondering something maybe y'all can help.

I am wanting to put in for a 3rd season hunt and a muzz hunt for my second choice. In 04' the muzz hunt had left over tags.

I would like to get drawn for my first choice but I also don't want to miss out on the muzz hunt if I don't get drawn for the first choice.

Will the new system change much for the second choice tags?

Let me try to understand what you are saying....
You want to draw deer 3rd season for your 1st choice but if you dont you want to draw a muzz tag for deer on your 2nd choice...
Were the tag numbers the same on 2005?

Will the new system change much for the second choice tags?
What new system are you refering to?
My guess is if there is leftover tags you will get one on your 2nd choice (if you dont draw 1st choice). Hope that helps.

Since a lot of people are going to try to get a hunt using 1 or 2 preferance points and saving the rest for another year, this scenario may happen. 100 tags to draw, 100 people that have saved up 14 points. No leftover tags, the 1 or 2 point area went to 14 points to draw. This may be a very difficult year to draw and there may be a lot of PO'ed hunters. You can throw away the odds on what has happened and how many points it took last year.

What is your thought on this one? Apply for a fourth season rut hunt where last year it took 11 points. By applying you are hoping that since their are more 4th season hunts this year than last year, maybe the hunt you want may actually take less than the 11 points that it took last year???? Just a thought and possible scenario. Also, will landowner tag prices go down now that the landowner must allow the voucher purchaser to hunt his or her land if the hunter wants?????

Or how about trying for a third season hunt in the areas that have a new fourth season? Lots will be diverted to the fourth, improving third season draw odds. Who knows, the guessing game is part of the fun, and with changes like this, it is all up in the air. My guess is that with only points used to draw charged, more people will try for lower point hunts, more will be forced into the second choice draw, and odds for second choices will drop.

No, they just won't be selling the tags at all. The only reason they were selling them in the first place was it was free money. They could sell out their ranch for hunting and then sell public land hunts, so I forsee the number of these tags sold to take a nosedive.

I think the CO draw for deer will be a crapshoot, last year the Gunnison units generally doubled what it took the previous year to get a tag, now with the 4th season tags and point banking you can throw out what normally happens. I think there will be some 3rd season hunts that might be had for lower number of points than last year but you just don't know. You can look at the numbers and hopefully guess right, good luck to all.

If you think that the landowner vouchers won't sell, look at Pennington's link to his sight and see all of his "sold out" hunts. The market is currently still there.

The market (demand) for the tags is certainly going to remain very strong. It is the supply that will somewhat dry up. The fact that most of the hunts are sold out is for a couple of reasons: The first is that this time of year, there are none to sell. The landowners have to apply and receive them first. Second, it could be that that fact that he says "sold out, MAY have more later" is because the supply for this year will shrink considerably.

Yes, there will still be landowner tags for sale, but I will bet you that they will be greatly reduced over the next few years. I am not talking about the landowner tags that are already being used ON the ranch they were issued for. I am talkng about the tags that are being sold with the stipulation that you CAN'T hunt on the ranch for which they were issued. These tags are basically being sold as a souce of money that the landowner is not out anything. He is not selling a hunt on his ranch. He is selling a public land ONLY tag. That loophole has been stopped.

Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread. I too think this year will be a real hard one to figure. On the one hand, there will be a number of people who will give up on the high point hunts and opt for something lower, really screwing up trying to "play the odds" on the lower and mid range drawings. However, some may try to be real sly and hope that enough people do that, which would give them a chance if they still stay in the hunt for a coveted tag.

The bottom line with this CO intrigue is that with the recent fridgid storms most of the 200"+ mozzbacks have succumbed to deep snow. And, with the small availablilty of groceries most of the 180 to 200" bucks will be the next to go. You might consider sending in your applications to the far left coast state of WA where the trophy mule deer hunting is outstanding.

Theridge,
Don't bother sending to WA as you can show up and buy over the counter and hunt just about all the units in the whole state during general seasons, including the early high hunts. I for one wish that this would change!

Txhunter58,

I have been watching Pennington's site and they were sold out, some later was posted prior to the ruling about having access on private land. If anything the tags will go up in price with access to private land. I think landowners will charge more and as long as the hunting stays like it is I think there will be a market and owners still wanting their cash. Only time will tell and you make some good points.
