I drew this hunt, does anybody know anything about these units. I drew with an outfitter but I would still like to know what to expect.

if you drew with Diebold you probably wont have any trouble seeing deer, i hear he does pretty well. I hunted this area a little last year and a couple of years ago, you probably wont see alot of deer but the chances of seeing a good one are better than most areas. good luck

Is this a late hunt, if it is it should be pretty good, listen to your guide if he say's to hold off do it because he think he can find a better one.You should see some nice ones, I'm sure you will get some early reports on bucks that they find during the scouting season.

The hunt dates are early Oct to Nov 5th. I am going opening week and then have the option of coming back the last week.

That's some of my favorite country in all the West. You're a very lucky hunter Cozmo8. I agree with Kilbuc, the later the better, but I would trust Tony Diebold. Set aside time to come back the last week if you need to. You will probably never draw that tag again.

Good luck!
Steve

The country is very remote, a satellite phone would be handy. There are some nice bucks there, but like most other Nevada units they are very spread out. Horn growth should be good from the wet season we've been having, but the overall herd numbers are still down from recent drought years.

The first week will be warm but the deer haven't been pressured yet. The deer should be starting to rut around a little by the end of the hunt in this unit; if you're looking for a full-on rut hunt there are some December seasons down by the Utah border.

Kilbuc is that your experience in these units that the last week is best? I am inclined to think that as well. My outfitter told me that any week could be good and they shot the biggest buck last year the second week of the season. He said that first week is warm but he may have a buck patterned and they are not moving much. The last week they will start to rut but he said that the bucks will sometimes move miles in a day so they are tough to keep track of.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-03-06 AT 06:55PM (MST)[p]Tony does well, I'm sure he knows the area. There is nothing wrong with the earlier dates as you stated in your post above. Both dates have good and bad points. The potential is there for a nice buck but the deer numbers in the area are a fraction of what they used to be. I used to bowhunt it in the 70's and it was awesome. I found a 191" gross skull there last year. It was in the big sage and I suspect it was a lion kill since there was a dead pronghorn 200 yards above it, but I have no proof. And I did see 7 sets of lion tracks in the snow in several trips there over several weeks.

Nvmuley in talking to Tony he thinks that lions are pouring over the border from Oregon and California. I don't completely understand the situation but I think lion hunting is not allowed in CA and there are restrictions in OR.

I agree with what Tony told you. They will travel.. I just read where a 120 lb female lion collared in UT, 26 miles west of Salt Lake City, was taken in CO near meeker. Quite a journey!
Here's some interesting Nevada lion harvest figures for areas 1 & 2 for you: from 1968 to 1987 no lions taken,, 19 years and no lions. From 1988 to 1996 nine lions were taken. And from 1997 to 2004 83 ,, that's right 83 lions were taken. Quite a jump! Do the math on how many deer kills that adds up to. They just keep pouring over the border,,

LAST EDITED ON Apr-03-06 AT 09:49PM (MST)[p]I guess that's one more thing us Nevadan's have to thank California for besides high home prices and imported fruity politics.

I know Tony personally. He is a good guy and will work very hard for you. He is a true outdoors-man, very fair. He is also 6' 9" tall, so get in shape so you can keep up with him. There are some real good bucks in there. I have hunted that unit as well as 015, the one problem I had was that the deer antlers are starting to loosen up and on several occasions the antlers came off when the animal fell or during the pack out. We have taken some good deer aout of there and seen some real monsters while hunting chukar there. Good luck.

You can take a good to great buck anytime during the season cuz you are huntin and not at home but the odds are the later the better. Big/old bucks don't take preasure well, they find a hiddy hole and go nocturnal. The archery and muzzy seasons occur before the rifle opener, thus some pressure. At the end of the season does are just starting to go into estrus and there is a little scent in the air. The big bucks will tend to stay out a little longer and travel a bit more, thus become a little more vulnerable. Still not a slam dunk but just trying to get the odds a little more in your favor. But good luck, remember glass, glass, glass. Also Tony is one of the best.

Cozmo-how many points did you have?I've got 7 and still can't draw! The first time I put in for Nevada I drew 033 late in the regular draw.Later,N.T.

I had 7 or 8 this year. I have mainly been putting in for 33 late, and 015. This year I do not have much planned so I thought I would add another unit to my application. Also if you look at the Nevada regs they have increased the permits a little bit in the Northwest corner. You just may draw a permit in the regular draw for 2006. Good Luck. How was that late 33 tag when you had it?

Tony is a straight foward guy and good conversationalist. The deer numbers a way down in this area but have improved recently. Predation is definitely part of the problem. Nevada manages for large bucks i.e. quality over quantity. You should have an excellent oppurtunity at a mature mule deer despite the lower deer numbers. Tony will probably have numerous bucks patterned as he lives in the area and does quite a bit of scouting. If this was a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) hunt I would recommend hunting the last week of the season, but with a guide that shouldn't be a concern.

nvmuley.....thanks for those enlightening figures on lion kills for that part of Nevada. As a Californian, please accept my apology. If any of you get the chance, kill one for me.

Yet another reason to be embarrassed to be from Kali!

Steve

Hey eelgrass,
No apologies needed,, hehe. It sure isn't guys like you that dictate your F&G policies. Heck, it isn't even your F&G department ! It's liberal leftist animal rights "put animals before people" politics. The real people with common sense are just out numbered by the dark side.
